“Another great trip to Turneffe Island.”
Reviewed 2 May 2011

This resort is always a pleasure. The waters around the island offer some of the best diving/snorkeling/fishing you are likely to find. Due to it’s secluded location, the reef is in good condition. It’s a great vacation if you want to enjoy the day time activities. There are no TVs- no phones – no stores. The nightlife is a few drinks at the pool bar and conversation with your fellow guests. The staff strives to create tasty and plentiful meals (served family style in a communal dining area). Rooms – regardless of if you select a cabana or a standard room- are big and airy with ceiling fans and air conditioning. I think all rooms have outdoor showers-- perfect for rinsing off that salt water. Overall- Turneffe is perfect for slowing down and relaxing while enjoying the beauty of the lovely tropical location. This was our fourth trip and we feel right at home.

We have just returned from our diving vacation at Turneffe Lodge and as repeat customers we were not disappointed as our last trip to Turneffe was in December 2006. Same great service, same great hospitality, same great vacation.
We are sure to return soon.
Thanks Vanda & Nick!

From our first greeting on the dock to the moment we left we felt so welcomed and looked after in this Island paradise.
We went to relax, dive and meet new people and our expectations were exceeded.
If you wanted to be by yourselves you could, but the emphasis here is being part of the family with meals around tables of eight. We loved this aspect of our stay and have made new friends (mostly from US) who we hope to dive with again.
All the rooms we saw were beautiful wood, clean with everything working.
We would recommend to anyone especially if you like sociable holidays.

We were at Turneffe Island Resort from 4/9-4/16/2011.

Leaving behind stressful lives in NY, my partner and I were utterly transported to an honest-to-God 21st century "Fantasy Island" (except in this re-make, Tatoo will blurt out, "The boat...the BOAT!!").

Turneffe Island Resort put us under some kind of trance. There is no other way to describe the completely transformational quality of our experience there.

For those who find lists useful, our stay was remarkable for a) the beauty of the setting and dreamlike quality of the resort, b) the excellent array of diving, fishing, and snorkeling activities, c) the superb service, food and genuinely caring staff, and d) last but SO ABSOLUTELY NOT LEAST the wonderful, outgoing interesting and warm people with whom we were so lucky to share this enchanting place.

However, the two of us are in agreement that Turneffe provided us with an absolutely exceptional holiday experience that simply, in its magical ENTIRETY, just so very far exceeded not only our highest expectations, but also managed to far surpass the sum of its parts. No "list" could ever convey the simple joy of waking each morning to the sea 50 feet form your beautiful room, sleeping at night with one's front and back doors wide open with blessed sea breezes freely flowing across you & through your space,, and the delicious experience of showering privately outdoors under the swaying palms by day and under the playful stars by night.

We want to thank not only the consummately professional and delightful managers Nick and Vanda for an amazing stay, but indeed everyone on this entire staff from the boat and dive/snorkel crew, to Jorge at the bar, Adelina and her delightful dining crew, the ever-accommodating housekeepers, Mary at Serenity Spa, and the drivers who make sure you & your bags all get safely from the airport to Belize, and (*sob!*) back again when you are forced to return to the world you left behind.

Absolutely every positive thing other travelers shared with us about Turneffe Island Resort as we made our vacation plan decision turned out to be gratifyingly true, and there is little that we can add in the way of specifics that hasn't already been written. However, I'll attempt to make a little shift now from the sublime to the ridiculous, and "give back" with a few new data points:

1) I would have to respectfully disagree with a prior reviewer who expressed a view that one can not swim easily at Turneffe. I am an avid swimmer (female, late 40s) in moderately decent shape and am happy to report that there are not one, but two, lengths of protected swimming zones at Turneffe where one can swim about the length of 2 Olympic pools, and in about 6-8 feet of water, without being ever more than perhaps 100 feet from shore. The water is clear, a perfect temperature, and safe.

2) TAKE WATER SHOES as the shore of Turneffe Island Resort have lovely seashells, but these same shells can be hard on one's feet as you walk out to swimming depth.

3) If you are a light-sensitive sleeper, but you wish to throw those room doors and windows fully open to the embrace of ocean air by night, I would strongly suggest that you bring along a sleep eye-mask. There is some resort security lighting at night that could bother very light-sensitive types (like me - but no bother as I take that mask everywhere).

4) Ensure that you have brought along plenty of sunscreen and burn gel. You are likely to get more sun than you intended on at least ONE of your dive/fishin/snorkel outings. Be prepared with LOTS of sun protection (maybe a long-slevve light shirt in which you can swim/snorkel, if you are sun-sensitive). There is a great little gift shop on the island, and while most of the items there were very reasonably-priced, you will find that tube of emergency Banana Boat perhaps pricier than you could ever imagine. : )

5) As the only same-sex couple on the island, we never felt like "weird standouts". Fellow guests were sophisticated and friendly individuals and we were just one among all the other couples enjoying themselves. We were really pleased at our reception and comfort level among this wonderful group of people.

But now, back to the sublime....GO to Turneffe Island Resort with someone you love. Have the time of your life, and remember why you work so damn hard all the time. Maybew one reason is that, every once in a great while, you can find yourself among an amazing gathering of fellow travelers (some of whom you might embrace as friends : )) in a place of mirage-like charm, and create the kind of memories you can call upon forever after.

The Turneffe Island Resort lived up to and exceeded our expecations on our second visit to Belize. We'd come to appreciate the friendliness of Belize on a previous trip to San Pedro and we weren't dissappointed this time either.

You can't go wrong with the diving here, the best is at the Elbow at the southern end of Turneffe Atoll, plus the trip out to Lighthouse Atoll and Half Moon Caye is delightful. I saw lots of the usual critters I always love, plus the bonus of lots of turtles, reef sharks and even an encounter with Bottlenose Dolpins.

The resort staff is superb. From the morning tea and coffe brought to us in the morning to the dessert at dinner, it was all perfect. The food is simply wonderful. You really can't go hungry here. Fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood entrees were our favorites, plus the made-to-order eggs for breakfast.

We stayed in the 'deluxe rooms' and found them to be great. If you like the idea of a 'private' cabana, that's fine, but we found the basic rooms to be just right. The air conditioning is pretty basic and noisy, but its better to just open the front and back doors and just let the ocean breeze keep the room cool. A screened patio and rear outdoor shower makes it simply silly to run an air conditioner, just enjoy the tropical nights and cool ocean breeze.

The managers Nic and Wanda were delightful, they worked hard to make sure that every guest had a great time. The dive staff is knowledgeable and helpful. George the bartender is the life of the evening as well.

The only caveat to remember is that this is a farily remote location. Divers should be sure that have your DAN insurance up to date. If you have any medical conditions, remember that it'll take two hours to get to emergency care even by helicopter. That said, this is the perfect place for adventure and relaxation.

Room Tip: go for the basic rooms-- they're fine.

This was truly an amazing vacation. It is hard to say what my favorite thing was, but I can list my top 5 or 6.

1) Coffee to your room each morning! Such a great way to wake up and start the day.
2) Attentive staff - they go out of their way to accomidate your needs and desires.
3) Private Island - very low stress, so relaxing and beautiful
4) Outdoor shower in cabañas - we never used the indoor shower. You get the warm tropical breezes as you shower. It really doesn't get any better than this.
5) Marvelous food. Served family style - a great way to get to know the other guests.
6) The Blue Hole trip. We went to the resort with our focus on fishing bone fish, permit, and tarpon. However, we took a day off and went with the divers and snorkelers. It was some of the best snorkeling. There was so much to see. Don't miss it.

This is a wonderful resort, great staff, good fishing - we'll be back!

Room Tip: Cabana 2 is a very nice

First class all the way. Food was some of the best we have ever had. Staff went out of their way to make our stay the best we have ever had. From the moment we landed we did not lift a finger or want for anything. The fact we were on an island 1.5 hours off the coast of Belize City made it all the more amazing. 15 dives over 6 days with an average boat ride of 5 minutes to the dive site made it ideal for those that want more time under the water and relaxing on the beach. Maintenance was great and facilities were well kept. Some damage from previous storms but nothing that took away from the islands beauty.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money on a Cabana
