A very nice escape for cruise life. Since there is no port in Belize, you must tender in the ocean, then ride a boat for 15 minutes to shore. The ruins were a good hour plus bus ride away and it was cool to see in person. Got some great photos as well. Recommended and we also rode a river boat as well back to the pier.

The drive was not pleasant especially the last 14 km which were over atrocious roads. Upon arrival we found the site in poor condition and although the others enjoyed the various climbs the site was not worth the trip.

Having been to Chichen Izta when you could climb the ruins and also when you could NOT, being able to climb the ruins is HUGE. We loved the tour and the climbing the ruins with our teenage son & daughter (they enjoyed it too). It is a strenuous climb but if you can, do. This was a cruise excursion for us & we are so glad we chose this one excursion over the others as mainland Belize does not have much to offer. It is a bit of a bus ride but we enjoyed the tour & hearing about the local customs & lives from our guides. The ruins are not the best Mayan ruins but climbing them made all the difference. Be cautious of young kids with wild animals wanting money for photo ops with the animals. These kids are known to cause trouble for tourists & its best to avoid them. Leaving the park we purchased a couple of beautiful mahogany bowls from a local craftsman. You will not find the quality of the bowls back at the cruise port. If you want one this is the place to purchase them & they are very willing to make you a deal. We also splurged on some Cokes made with REAL CANE SUGAR for the bus ride back to the docks. They bottle the Cokes in Belize and they were quite a treat for us.

My husband and I went on a sporadic Western Caribbean cruise in April 2014 and Belize City was one of the ports. We had just visited the Mayan Ruins at Tulum and were so intrigued we wanted to visit another Mayan ruin site. Since you can't walk on or explore the Tulum ruins we purposely chose Altun Ha because you are able to climb up them.

Our tour started with a 2 hour jungle cruise where we saw monkeys, storks, iguanas, crocodiles, and many local birds. It was beautiful and very fun. Then we caught a bus to the ruins. Once at the ruins we were given a 30 minute guided tour of the two plazas. After we were only given about 30 minutes to wonder around ourselves. At Tulum we were given almost 2 hours (now they are much larger than Altun Ha, but 30 minutes was not enough time by any means!)

You are able to climb on and walk up the majority of the ruins. The largest one has a staircase built up the back with a handrail so it is very easy for most individuals. The remaining ruins are smaller, but there are no man-made stairs or handrails.

In front of the ruins in a strip of shops and some restrooms. We didn't have time to look around as we were running to get back on our bus. I did use the restrooms and they served their purpose.

I am glad I went so I can say that I got to climb several ancient Mayan ruins, but this site was not as impressive as some of the others. Also, the amount of time we were given was not sufficient, but then again if you went without a tour you could have all the time you wanted. You climb some of the ruins at your own risk, as one is pretty steep. We climbed it without any problems.

I would recommend these ruins since I am fascinated with the Mayan history and that you can experience them by climbing them. Plus, we have been to many Caribbean ports and have snorkeled enough and seen enough beaches that I think exploring the history of this part of Mexico is must more rich and exciting.

We booked our tour with Norwegian while traveling on the Dawn. We had an excellent trip to Altun Ha Ruins....the road was an experience in itself. The guide joked and said we were getting a massage as well as a ride which was the truth. The guides were knowledgeable about the site and we enjoyed the information they shared with us.
