“Xunantunich Mayan Ruins from Belize City”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We took this tour as a day excursion that we booked through our cruise line. When we got off our tender, we were quickly shown to our bus where we then made the trip out to the ruins. The bus was comfortable, not overcrowded and the AC worked well! As soon as we pulled away, one of our guides for the day began to speak about the country of Belize and as we made our way through the city and into the less populated areas she continued to give us great info. While the drive may seem like quite a distance the time goes by quickly as you are constantly learning about the country. The route to the ruins even took us by the childhood home of one of our guides so we really got a sense of how people in the country truly live. Once we made our way to the site of the ruins, we were transported across the river and shuttled via small van to the visitors center and entrance to the Park. The nice thing about Xunantunich is that because it is not directly accessible via car, and not a quick drive from the cruise port, it is not overrun by crowds of people. As we made our way up the hill to the area of the actual ruins nothing could have prepared me for the actual scale of the main structure. It is so incredibly imposing on the landscape it is impossible to not be impressed. What's more is they actually let you climb to the top. While we were there, we saw cool insects, a few birds and some howler monkeys in a tree nearby. There was also an iguana or two as well. After our tour we made our way back to the bus area where we were given a few minutes ( literally) to poke through the roadside stands by the river and we were headed back to Belize City. On the way back we did stop for a lunch at a local restaurant. The guides seemed to be in contact with the restaurant because as soon as we were seated we were served. Lunch consisted of traditional foods including chicken, rice/beans and a potato salad, all were very good. After lunch we headed back to the Port where we were able to grab a tender back to the ship and we were off. All in all it was a great experience and something that I would highly recommend!

“Xunantunich-Mayan Ruins-Belize”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

This was the best excursion we did the whole trip. The bus ride was about two hours from Belize City, but it didn't seem that long. Make sure you get on the bus and not on the van. From what I heard, the van was not nearly as comfortable. The bus was air-conditioned (very important for the ride back), and the two tour guides on the bus, Lynette and Therese (I hope I'm spelling this correctly), were excellent. They talked to us most of the way there and back, giving us insight into various landmarks, villages, Belize life, and their native language (broken English). I learned a great deal on that bus ride, and they helped the trip go by much faster. At the ruins, we had a tour guide specific to the site. He was also very knowledgeable. A Mayan himself, he provided a lot of information on their culture. He also seemed to be up to date with the most recent archaeological finds at this site and others. If you can make it to the top of the ruins, do it. The views are incredible. We also saw Howler monkeys, baby iguanas, and other wildlife. On the way back, we stopped at a restaurant and ate local dishes. Food was great, though I'm not a fan of fried plantains. Overall great experience. Things to know: Know that this is not meant to be a luxurious tour. There's some adventure involved, but those who couldn't hang with us, didn't necessarily have to participate in everything. They were able to stay at the base of the ruins. Bring Water. Be ready to walk/hike/climb in intense heat and humidity. Bring a quality camera, because you may never be able to see this beauty again. Be one of the first to meet for the excursion so you can get on the bus. Getting on the bus, rather than a van, is very important. Bug spray. I heard some people complaining of mosquito bites. I didn't notice them at all, but we were also covered in bug repellent. Sun tan lotion. A lot of time is spent in the direct sun. Finally, bring a comfortable backpack to carry everything. I think that as long as you're aware of all this, you'll really enjoy it.

David, it’s fantastic to know that your visit to Xunantunich, , which was a thriving Mayan city during the Classic Period, has been the highlight of your Belizean adventure. We will let Lynette and Therese know how they have made it even more special! Thank you for sharing your experience with us and for choosing Chukka! We hope to see you soon in a near future in Belize, Jamaica or Grand Turk

“Cave Tubing In Belize w/Chukka Adventures”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

My daughter and I just finished a cave tubing adventure in Belize with Chukka. We booked through Carnival Cruises because it is an hour and twenty minute ride from the port. Our guide was very professional and funny. His name was Tarik (a.k.a. Mr. T) and he was very accommodating. During our bus ride he provided facts about the country of Belize and what we could expect from our tour. He spoke for over one hour which made the bus ride go by very fast. The cave trip was really interesting. You take a 20 minute walk from the base-camp to the rivers entrance. Along the way, our guide was talking about the local plants and animals and how medicines are created from what is located within the canopy. We had a a group of 8 tubers who were on this tour into the mouth of the cave. The trip lasts about 45 minutes and is very cool including the temperature of the water. After we exited the water, we rinsed off our suits and made it over to the lunch area where we had a treat of locally prepared foods of stewed chicken and beans/rice. There is a bar where you can get soft drinks and local beer. This is one tour that everyone should do once in their life.

“Chukka Cave Tour at Jaguar Paw Outpost”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

On the recommendation of our daughter, we chose to try out the Cave Tubing in Belize. We were doubtful about the excursion because it involved 1-1.5 hours in a bus EACH WAY, and only around 45 minutes in the tube after a 20 minute hike through a jungle. We seriously doubted that it could be worth the time, but she loved it last year with another company and since there is basically nothing to do in Belize City Port, we went for it. Well, we were pleasantly surprised. Our tour guide was Elvis and he was AWESOME! He talked the whole time there and most of the way back giving us all kinds of historical and local information about Belize and the sites along the way. When we got to the site, we rented lockers (even the large is pretty small, so we had to get 2 at $6 each), split into smaller groups of about 8, got geared up and went for a short 20 minute hike. You MUST wear water shoes or sandals with straps, so bring your own or rent them there. They stopped along the way to show us plants, etc. which was very interesting. We had to carry our own tubes, but it was manageable. Then we came to the river. We sat in our tubes, linked together in our group with our guide, and started down the river and into the caves. They are incredible. They told us it was a 100% we tour, but I could have easily kept my camera dry inside a dry bag and took a few pictures on the way (but I wouldn't risk a really expensive one on it, FYI - as some groups went into a small waterfall or I suppose you could fall out or have someone flip you) The guide told us all about the caves, cave structure, Mayan culture regarding caves, etc. It was beautiful and informative. When we were back to the starting point we climbed out and carried our gear back. There was a changing area, outside showers, restrooms, a swimming pool, restaurant, and gift shop all there and we had about 30 minutes or so to do as we liked until we were ready for the trip back to port. Elvis had a game at the end to see who could remember some of the facts he told us along the way and gave away coins from Belize as the prize, as well as a few little flags, etc. Overall, it was a great way to spend the day in Belize and definitely something I would recommend to anyone who hasn't done something like this before. I was worried about bugs, etc. and it really wasn't an issue. The water was pretty cool, but we quickly adjusted and enjoyed the ride.

“Island Beach Break with lunch- Water Caye”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Hm... key words? Private island... pale sand... gorgeous water... shady spots on the beach... inflatable water trampoline for the kids... lunch included... and a water taxi from and back to the cruise ship... yeah, we'll take this excursion! It was totally worth it. Your guide, Natalie, was so friendly and really knew how to get us engaged. She really knew her stuff. Once we got to Water Caye, everything was laid out and waiting... we just set up camp at the spot we picked and dove right in. Lunch was delicious, by the way... going back to Natalie's comments about "we don't have fast food in Belize!" It was a nice, relaxing time off the cruise ship... just what we needed.

Note to future cruisers: It's worth it to just buy this excursion with lunch. You get a wristband if you pay for lunch, which they take from you when they serve you. The restaurant on the island serves three kind of chicken, rice and beans, and cheese nachos. For your included lunch, you get a plate of seasoned (but not spicy-hot) grilled chicken with a mound of rice and beans and cole slaw, and they put out a big cooler of tropical fruit punch. You can also buy drinks. If you'd rather pick your "flavor" of chicken or you've got a picky eater who'll only eat the nachos, then maybe it's worth it to you to pay separately.
