“Great colonial house, interior a bit outdated, good location”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

When travelling I try to stay at interesting original places and try to avoid the chain hotels. So I picked this hotel.
It's a beautiful white colonial house by the sea with its typical columns, a porch, a big lobby to chill out in and a staircase leading to the rooms. Trying to describe the colonial flair here. :)
The outside and lobby of the hotel are very nice old style. Our room was for 3 people and very spacious but outdated, old carpet, dated furniture and a musty smell because of the humidity. It was fine though as it's a summer destination and one only stays at the hotel to sleep. The bathroom was modern and very clean though.
We didn't use the TV and Wifi worked fine.

There is a restaurant with a window wall with view over the ocean and a bar. The restaurant interior seems a bit 60s and doesn't really fit the colonial style, but this just as a comment not to criticise. It was beautiful to have breakfast here in the morning with the sun shining. I recommend you tell the hotel if you want to have breakfast. We didn't one time (because one normally wouldn't) and then the waitress wasn't there yet.

In 5 min you can walk into the town centre where there is a travel agent, an ATM and restaurants close by. The Swing Bridge is about 10 min by foot. We didn't walk any further than that due to safety reasons.

I think I'll return to Belize and would stay at this hotel again.

A great location! A great old character property! A great price. Very roomy and comfortable accommodation. Easy walking to safe cafés and restaurants on the nearby Radisson property. Also easy walking to the tourist shopping district. Be careful where you venture in Belize City but this chateau made us feel safe and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was excellent but surprised us with its Chinese flair. Unfortunately the restaurant itself on the 2nd floor is very tired. When we asked if we could have dinner on the outside 1st floor veranda they pulled out all the plugs and made us feel very special. It was a great start to a 2 week Belizean holiday!

Our tour group stayed here a fortnight ago for one night. The staff were charming and the food excellent. However, the plumbing is in serious need of modernisation, although to be fair the weather was still very wet at the time of our visit. We obtained a prompt change of room from the first floor to a faded, but grand top floor suite when faeces came up the bath plughole. Other members of the group were not so lucky as they had their toilets overflow in the middle of the night, when it was too late to get anything done about it. Great situation and with serious investment this could be a superb hotel.

Our room had a wonderful porch looking right at the sea. Lovely, comfortable bed, two seating areas, good Wi-Fi, strong shower, silent. The staff is excellent and very competent. Yes, it is an aged Colonial structure, with sagging floors and some steep stairs, but that is part of its charms. This is an excellent value and made our time in Belize City very enjoyable. The restaurant was also quite good and you are close to the Museum and water taxi.

The hotel is trying to fall apart, but does have an air of past glory. The big entry staircase is uneven and soft in places, as are the hallways that has many small stairs on the way to the room. Uneven carpeting throughout. The room was worn and in need of maintenance: scuffed walls, rusty metals in many places, peeling paint, carpet unraveling at the edges, etc. The bed was plain and comfy. A reasonable work desk in fine condition. Free WiFi with about 1 Mbps speed (PW needed). Bathroom worn but clean. Towels of fine quality. A/C was an "under the window" unit that worked well and was not too noisy. The ocean view is nice. The quiet neighborhood is OK - a park is being constructed on the same block and there is a nice walk on the ocean front with a pier. The hotel staff is "old school", i.e. well trained and very helpful and polite - all in all a quite OK experience.

Room Tip: get an ocean view

Not wanting to stay in central Belize City, we opted for the Chateau Caribbean located right on the sea front. Definitely a good call as it was quiet and there was always a welcome breeze. The building itself has obviously seen better days but everything was functioning just fine, including the air-conditioning, showers and Wi-Fi. The staff were all very friendly and helpful (when we were there in late April/early May, there were very few other clients and it seemed as if there were more staff than guests), and the dinners in the restaurant were good and reasonably priced. For breakfast, we ate at Le Petit Cafe in the adjacent Radisson Hotel - cheap pastries and excellent coffee.

Internet never worked, ugly and smelly carpet in the whole place. Walls with dirty marks, very sad. i understand that it's a old building but it's not in good shape; bad maintenance. After our dinner, they want to close ASAP the restaurant so they rushed the service. I found so dirty the carpet and cut nails left on the floor. Yuk! Bad experience:( next day for breakfast same dirty floor...
