The ATM cave was one of the highlights of our trip to Belize- it was an amazing experience to be surrounded by so much history. I viewed the pictures of it online before we went but they don't compare at all to kneeling in front of the pots or the crystal maiden. If you can swim and don't mind caving and walking through chest high water definitely do it!
We went with Carlos Panti - carlos.caveguide@yahoo.com - and he was an amazing guide- I won't repeat what everyone else has already said but he was great- he shared with us a lot of knowledge about local plants and the local communities as well as the cave features and the Mayan artifacts. Also the food he fed us was delicious local fare (the Pacz people seemed to have gross white bread sandwiches which I am not a huge fan of - but thats just me) We highly recommend Carlos if you're looking for a good guide!

If you do this cave tour, please choose Carlos. He was AMAZING! Took us through the jungle and had us get out of our comfort zone and 'sample' the different types of plants on our journey to the cave site. Very informative, super safe & cautious, & had the best sense of humor. After our trek through jungle we were able to cool off (#refreshing!) at the cave's entrance in the lagoon area. We put on helmets & head lamps & entered into the cave. (Sidenote: you can leave your valuables at the cave entrance or anything you do not want to get wet. All was there when we returned. Please wear tennis shoes or water shoes that have non-slip soles. You will be so happy you did as you will be doing some intense climbing in the cave and coming out of the water you don't want to slip on a rock.) I cannot describe in words how beautiful the cave formations were. The best thing for me was the up close interaction you had with being right in front of ancient artifacts. Amazing and you will rarely if never have this same type of experience anywhere else. Everyone is very respectful so please do not touch. The crystal maiden skeleton was really cool to get to see in person. I was in awe the entire time in the cave. Carlos made several stops throughout the cave to observe certain areas and we really appreciated him taking the time to do so as I have heard from others it's more like an "in & out" type of tour when booking with several other tour company guides. He was a great story teller and really brought the tour to life. Carlos also set up a late lunch of chicken, rice & beans & Belikin after we returned from our hike. Total time of tour was about 5 hours. If you are traveling to Belize, you must book this. And soon! The word from locals is that you will not be able to do this tour as freely as they have been in the past and maybe even at all.

Amazing!!! A must do! Dress accordingly you WILL get wet and the water and cave are chilly. Sucks that you can't take in cameras but it makes sense and you get to fully experience the trip w/o being behind a camera the whole time. A once in a lifetime adventure!

I was a bit skeptical, but this really was the best thing we did all vacation. Francisco, our guide, was great, he didn't rush us through like some guides seemed to (we spent about 3 hours in the cave itself). Great caving experience going through up front and really interesting Mayan site in the back. I am just an ok swimmer and didn't have any problems in the water spots of the cave, there are some tight spots. Guides will have you turn the lights off at times to do some activities with you, just a heads up. It was also much more eerie (not scary, just eerie) when our guide waited for all the other groups to clear out of the back part of the cave where the skeletons are and had us stand alone in there for awhile. Plan your trip outside of Belize's rainy season (we cut it close but caught some great weather) as they do shut this site down when the water is too high.

After 2 weeks of tours around Guatemala and Belize, we hit the double jackpot here. The ATM caves are a must and Patrick (who we booked through Belize Nature Tours) really brought it all to life. We overheard a load of fairly deadpan guides. Patrick is knowledgable, interesting, fun, passionate and really makes it a dramatic experience.

You'll get wet, have to climb and not be afraid of the dark! But it is absolutely worth it. And hurry, because it can't last. You are so close to the artefacts that you could actually touch them.

Just do it!
