“Great place to stay with amazing staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2013

Loved the El Rey Inn so much, it really made our stay in Belize very special. The staff here are amazing and so helpful and really make you feel at home. The dining area is very social and gives you the opportunity to mingle with other guests from all over the world as well as locals. I highly recommend El Rey Inn and would definitely stay here again!

Two friends and I stayed at the El Rey Inn in Belmonpan (run by Nick and his beautiful wife, Shannon) for a few weeks. We stayed in the basic room due to our budget, and as the name suggest, it was a basic room, but clean and very comfortable. The shower was clean, had hot water and a good pressure. We had satellite TV in the room, a fan and the room was cleaned everyday.

The main attraction of our stay were the staff!!! The staff were amazing!!! Absolutely brilliant. So friendly and helpful. Definitely made our trip. The other clients at the hotel were also great. We met so many amazing people from different walks of live. It's clearly a favourite hotel amongst holiday makers and businessmen in Belmopan.

We also had the opportunity to swap our room in Belmopan with a room in their newly acquired hotel in Placencia (a beautiful beach resort) at no extra cost.

All in all, we had a great stay at the El Rey Inn. Will definitely recommend.

P.s: Shannon's cheesecakes were amazing! A must try...

We stayed at El Rey during the "business" portion of our most recent trip to Belize...we were mostly going to be checking on our family farm which was inland, so Belmopan seemed to be a decent locale...my main criteria that I gave my husband was that we had to have AC since we would be inland...and for that, I am very grateful that the split unit AC worked very well and was quiet at El Rey.

The staff were friendly, but since we really had our days mapped out, I can't really say to what extent they can help you find "activities" to do (i.e. book tours, etc.) It was a little frustrating that our room was not cleaned beyond taking the garbage out a few days and that they kept taking towels out but not giving us towels back...several days we had to ask the night staff to get us towels...after working all day and wanting nothing more than a shower, it's kinda a bummer to not have a towel...The bathroom was very clean, just a linens issue...

My biggest "disappointment" with the hotel was related to the size of the room for the price we paid...We have stayed throughout Belize (Corozal to Placencia and Cayo to the Cayes) so we know what rooms cost...I must admit...we had 3 adults staying in our room, so that obviously made it feel more cramped...but we have paid much less for much more room plus breakfast in other locales and with more amenities...

So, if you need a clean room for a couple nights in a convenient location (we could walk to almost any restaurant in Belmopan), El Rey is a great option...

We stayed two nights in probably the most boring capital on earth to visit the Bluehole National Park before we took the Bus to Mexico. Its hard to find a room in Belmopan for a reasonable price so we booked two nights in a budget room for 45 US$ per night. They just finished painting the walls of our basic room when we checked in so we smelled fresh paint all night. Not that nice. Wifi worked well in the room. Staff was friendly but told us the rules of the hotel at first so we felt treated like small children somehow. We had diner at the first night, but it wasnt really good so we went to the chinese restaurant down the road the other day. However, the homemade cheese cake is pretty good there. The fact to be locked in at night is also not very nice especially if you are a smoker. All in all we think that the room rate is overpriced and we would choose another place if we would stay in Belmopan again.

El Rey Inn was great. Had a room with a very large bed for two, tv and wi-fi and A/C. The staff were very helpful as well. The location of the inn was pretty good, we went out and walked around the town and we didn't feel unsafe at night. They also have a little seating area in the front where you can order food and listen to some music, very relaxing.

I stayed at the El Rey Inn three separate times during my month-long trip in Belize, and each time it was like home away from home. Nick (British) and Shannon (home-grown Belmopan Belizean) are excellent hosts - intelligent, friendly, hard-working people doing their very best to make their hotel better and better all the time - and succeeding. They have a true understanding of the word hospitality. They took over this hotel in April 2012, and it is fast earning a well-deserved reputation as the best affordable accomodation in Belmopan. It is located on a quiet residential street, but very handy to a large supermarket and internet cafe a couple of short blocks away. The rooms are very clean and well-maintained (all the ones I stayed in seemed to have been freshly painted not long previously), and the staff are well-chosen for their efficiency, attentiveness, genuine friendliness and eagerness to help (Juan in particular was excellent). Both Nick and Shannon have an in-depth knowledge of what to see and do in Belize, and are happy to share their extensive knowledge.

I stayed in a room with TV, a spotless bathroom and a ceiling fan (I don't usually bother with air-con, though they have this option in some rooms too if you want it) and it was only $45 US (90 BZ$) per night. This was March 2013 - prices obviously may differ in the future, or depending on the type of room you choose. If there are a choice of rooms to choose from when you arrive, they're happy to let you take a look first and pick your preference.

If the overly-touristed Belize hotspots like San Ignacio, Caye Caulker and San Pedro have left you exhausted and dazed, I can highly recommend the laid-back town of Belmopan (close to some nice cave tubing and other activities/sights). There's a good pizza/pasta/chicken wings place (beware - enormous portions!) called Pasquales in town, and the Bullfrog Inn down the ring road has good meals too. Of course, if you don't want to leave the El Rey Inn, they also serve excellent meals right there - Shannon often does the cooking herself (beware- addictive cheesecake!). I think the most expensive dinner item on their menu while I was there was a very nice home-made lasagne, garlic bread and salad for a mere $12 US. They do some quality pizzas, burgers, pastas and quesadillas too. The breakfasts are great too.

Awesome value food and accomodation - you won't find a better family-run hotel in Belmopan.

Sincerely, Kevin Casey (the Remote River Man)

My son and I had had a difficult afternoon after getting stood up by our guide. But our taxi driver, Bert, suggested the El Rey and I'm so glad he did. The room was immaculate, they had tv and wi-fi (important for us to rearrange our plans), and we ate the best homemade pineapple cheesecake ever! The staff were helpful and the overall bed and breakfast vibe helped us de-stress after such a long day. We only stayed one night, but I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: We ended up getting a room that originally would have cost more because it was an A/C room, but sinc...
