“Unbeatable hospitality, delicious food, wonderful people -- and the opportunity to not just be a tourist”

We came to Monkey Bay to celebrate our anniversary. We stayed in the Mountain View cabin and woke every morning to a wonderful array of bird songs and summer breezes. We sat on the hammock reading in the afternoon and looking out at the mountains.

Monkey Bay is a wonderful operation with a vision and skilled staff members. The staff quickly became friends and invaluable resources - sharing all of their local knowledge, advise, and really going out of their way to accomodate whatever we needed - including dietary needs. The head chef is an amazing woman who made me special dishes because of my allergies that were just as delicious as everything else on the spread. What was especially welcome was the use of vegetables and recipes from her home-made cookbook. She is also an amazing and active community member - something this place definitely helps foster.

I think we liked it so much because it wasn't pretentious or fancy - but very homey and well-run. The owner has done a great job making space for & supporting the leadership of some amazing Belizean's who really keep the place going and find ways to have it serve not just as a nice place for visitors to get a room but as a real asset to the community.

We will definitely be heading back to Monkey Bay anytime we come to Belize and there is a much greater likelihood we will come back to Belize because of Monkey Bay.

Thanks Aretha, Juan, and Matthew!

I traveled to Belize for the first time this summer - working as a facilitator for a student group. Monkey Bay is the perfect combination of beauty, affordability, comfort and convenience. I give it my unreserved recommendation.

The site is beautiful - set in coastal savannah and broadleaf forest, we were woken by birdsong every morning, and saw a great diversity of wildlife without even leaving the campus. The rooms were simple but very clean and comfortable - each had the comfort of a wall-mounted fan to keep us cool in the tropical heat. The spacious, breeze dining hall was a great place to consume our delicious, healthy meals prepared by Aretha and the kitchen crew. The library has reliable wifi access, and I was able to stay in touch with all my business stateside while spending my days in the jungle. The campus is walking distance to two excellent restaurants when we wanted a night out and a beer, and it is a short (7min) bus ride from the exceptional Belize Zoo! I couldn't imagine a better spot to call home in Belize.

Also, Monkey Bay staff ran the logistics of our 10-day trip. All told, I spent 3 weeks in Belize, and the folks at Monkey bay were without a doubt the friendliest, most professional, most competent and most interesting people I had a chance to interact with. Juan is an incredible guide - he knows every creature and most plants in the rainforest, and has an amazing ability to spot wildlife even while driving on the highway. Aretha, Juana and Nora (the kitchen crew) are incredibly gracious, and cook excellent food - the tastiest and healthiest we had in our time here. Lincoln & Chester take care of logistics and site management, and were always friendly and happy to help out or just chat. The staff took us to Mountain Pine Ridge, Tobacco Caye, and arranged a service project in a nearby school. The logistics were flawless.

I plan to return every summer, and I feel very lucky to have such a welcoming and comfortable place to stay.

We stayed at Monkey Bay on the last night of our trip and it may have suffered somewhat in comparison with some truly excellent lodges (Parrot's Nest and Sun Creek.)
Monkey Bay seems to be set up primarily to handle student groups, but can accommodate small parties too. We stayed in room 6 (?), which has a double bed and bunk beds. About $BZ80 for the 4 of us. Rustic, but comfortable enough. A rotating fan helped keep things cool. There were screens on the windows, but few bugs anyway, so not really needed.
Dinner was a reasonable $BZ22 for a spaghetti buffet, although a kid's discount might have been in order. They did cater to the picky eaters in our group, which was appreciated.
Breakfast at $BZ14/pp is rather overpriced, although certainly tasty enough.
There were no student groups present, might be a lot noisier if there were! For us very restful.
We drove about a mile and a half down to the swimming hole on the Sibun River, which was quite refreshing.
Saturday morning a local family set up sales tables in the outside corridor for the usual slate and straw items. I prefer to keep commerce and sleeping distinct, so didn't care for this, but others may welcome the chance to shop more.
It's less than an hour to the airport, so Monkey Bay is a good choice for late arrivals or early departures.
