“no animals”
Reviewed 20 February 2013

There is a big speculation near the river, a lot of bulldozer are digging in the reserve. Probably for this reason we havent seen any animals, only a lot of mosquitos. At the reception doesn't explain nothing of the reserve.
The lodge is ok if you use it as base to visit other places. The food is good.

We took a taxi from the airport to the Belize City bus station and then a bus right to Monkey Bay. It was the perfect place to land and catch up on sleep after an overnight flight. The staff were extremely helpful. The food was delicious. We volunteered at a school so we didn't check out their wildlife options. The zoo is an easy bus ride away. We had a simple room which was very clean.

The lodgings are immaculate and the food was great! The hospitality was amazing! The staff more than accommodating! They offer educational guided tours to the caves, canoeing down the Sibun River gawking at the wildlife, tromping through the savannah and more for the average tourist and educational/internship programs for international students. If you are looking for a stimulating, educational experience...you must check them out!

Monkey Bay is situated in the Mayan mountains of the Belizian pine forests. Located near Carocol (Mayan Ruins) this wild life sanctuary protects many of Belize's prized icons such as the Howler Monkey, Jaguar, and tapir.

The food is amazing at the sanctuary and is buffet style dinning. The sanctuary is located near "Big Rock falls" which is a 120 foot water fall which is stunning, other locations such as the Sibun river which guests run to in the morning for a quick swim is also very breathtaking. The staff is very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and are fluent in both English, Spanish, and the local Mayan language.

Overall great stay, great people, beautiful scenery, and a unique way to spend a couple days in Belize.

Activities such as zip lining, canoeing, caving, and jungle excursions are available.

One last thing, free WiFi available in the library

Room Tip: Monkey Bay hosts many school and educational groups, staying away from their rooms will guarantee a...

Monkey Bay was fantastic from the moment they arranged to pick myself and my University Group up from the airport. The vehicle that pulled up was the coolest old school bus that had been decorated with a huge array of all things Belizean.

Our stay at Monkey Bay was fantastic, every opportunity was given to us to see as much of the country as we could hope for.

The guides in Juan, Chester and Lincoln were so helpful and knowledgeable throughout the trip and without them the trip would not have been as amazing as it was. They were all so knowledgeable and clearly loved their job and their country.

Monkey Bay itself was perfectly situated. It is so close to the Sibun River that if there was any small amount of time free there was always time to end up swimming in the river and getting nibbled by the Tetra.

We were taken on excursions to caves, mountains, rivers, Jungles and eventually all the way out to the coast where we got transported out to Tobacco Caye.

Monkey Bay helped make Belize the best trip I could have hoped for and I can honestly say that the 8 days I spent in Monkey Bay were right up there with the best days i've ever had in my life.

I would recommend this place to anyone who has a love for nature.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Dorms which were clean and stayed as cool as possible.

We stayed at Monkey Bay for only 1 night but were still blown over by the hospitality. The grounds are nice and dotted with hammocks. We saw golden-fronted woodpeckers, parrots, yellow-breasted chats, and orioles before we'd even had breakfast! The rooms were clean and good value and the communal food was really good.

For us, what made this place so special was the tailormade tour they organised for us at only a few days notice with Juan - possibly the most knowledgeable and happiest guide in the whole of Belize! This incorporated a trip to Belize zoo, a trip out to Gales Point to watch the manatees (with a bonus wildcard of watching the captain reel in a massvie tarpon), tour around Belmopan and Spanish Lookout, a night in bullet tree falls, and morning at xuanantunich....I don't think tours like this are the main business of Monkey Bay but it's something they do incredibly well. Juan was just amazing - you know you've got a damn good guide when they can spot tiny birds like an acorn woodpecker up ahead while negotiating the bumpy dirt roads, when they know that termites taste of carrots, and they can answer any random question about the country's infrastructure, wildlife or history that you throw at them! Juan also pulled up to show us Marie Sharps chilli sauce factory - this is a man with a big heart focussed on the right things!

Our three days in the Cayo district were fun-packed, memorable and gave us a great introduction to the real Belize thanks to Monkey Bay - thank you Anna, Brittany, Lincoln and Juan :-)

Room Tip: We stayed in a private room in the bottom block. It was nice, simple, clean. The windows have good m...

Our family just returned from a day's excursion to Monkey Bay Sanctuary. Although we arrived there unexpectedly, we could not have been treated better! We were welcomed by Aretha, who prepared a tasty and hearty snack for our canoe trip down the pristine Sibun River. Juan, our guide, ensured that we caught sight of various inhabitants of the area, including toucans and egrets, iguanas, and crocodile. Our tour ended with sampling of fresh oranges, and a delicious dinner prepared by Aretha. Monkey Bay Sanctuary is a hidden gem. It was serene and peacful with lots of friendly conversation and assistance from the staff. We expect to return to Monkey Bay and share our wonderful experience with future visitors.
