“Jewel in a forest glade”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2013

Mot mots hoot at dawn and soon a whole range of birds start singing in spite of a low cloud that shrouds the hillside. Much earlier, in the night, howler monkeys had made their territorial calls. The sounds of wildlife compliment the remarkable scene of the lodge and its cabanas set on a hillside around a Mayan site in a forest clearing. What started as a home now accommodates guests, still with a very personal service. Owner Vicky and managers Catarina and David even join the guests for dinner. All three are very knowledgeable about the locality, the Mayan ruin and the wildlife. They never seem to tire of returning again to these subjects with each new set of guests. Even as the introduction and drinks at the bar get under way, the humming bird feeders and activity in the glorious crimson flowering erythrina tree provide a great distraction and one could spend hours in the lodge just enjoying this pageant. But all around, the forest beckons. Clearly a huge amount of work has been done clearing trails through the forest and cutting a meadow on the valley floor to create different habitats to attract a great diversity of birds and animals. Several days could be spent exploring the trails and swimming or tubing in the river as well as taking in some very good trips locally. Our stay here was certainly a memorable highlight of a two week trip through Belize

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pook's Hill and couldn't recommend it more highly. Beautiful rooms, grounds and the friendliest staff (under Ray's management at the time) made us feel very welcome. The main lodge, as has been described in a number of other reviews, is magnificent and the communal dining was very pleasant, delicious and plentiful. It provides a great opportunity to meet and interact with the other guests about their experiences in this beautiful country (as well as gain insight into their own countries). Many trails onsite are well maintained and marked and offer a variety of choices (Jungle, Meadow, River). The accommodations were beautiful, comfortable, well maintained and clean. For those who look for such things, this place is very Eco-friendly and for those who don't, you won't notice. All in all, just a fantastic laid back location to which you will soon plan to return. Sorry for the delay in posting this review, but we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: For bird watchers/enthusiasts, there are special accommodations that are highly recommended.

A beautiful spot in the middle of pristine jungle. Pook's Hill is a very well run lodge. Cat, Vic and David are really engaged in making their guest enjoy their experience. The rooms are simple yet very nice. Cleverly built so you are inside your room but it you can still feel - and specially hear - that you are in the middle of a jungle. The evening snacks and meal are a highlight where everyone sit down together and share experiences and tips. It is the best hotel if you are planning to do the ATM cave. The hotel guide was very good and we got there way ahead of the rest of the groups and enjoyed having the cave all by ourselves... Go tubing in the roaring river. It's fun, relaxing and inside the hotel perimeter. A last word: Mike and Hector - our guides while there were wonderful!!!!

This is a great experience. The hotel, rooms, food, service are all excellent and unique. The location is right in the jungle. There is great bird watching in the morning. The downside is that it's a 30-45 minute ride from the main road on a very poor road.

This was my second trip to the jungle of Belize. The first time I stayed at Chaa Creek, and I much preferred Pook's, especially for the price. The setting is very remote, and there aren't many rooms, so you really feel like you're deep in the rainforest. The meals, though a little on the pricey side, were great, and there was always plenty left for seconds.

We stayed in a Bird Walk Cabana, which was really nice and spacious, with a large deck outside for wildlife watching. We never had any issue with the hot water.

The trail system is extensive and well maintained, and of course the proximity to the ATM cave is a huge plus.

If you're into massages and spa treatments, Chaa Creek is a good choice, but if your main interest is the jungle, I thought Pook's was better and at a much more reasonable price, and seems to be in a better location for seeing animals. The hosts, David and Catarina, were also incredibly nice and helpful.

The three stars for the sleep quality has nothing to do with the room itself, but the sounds of the forest, especially howler monkeys, can be pretty loud at night. But, that's the reason you're there!

Room Tip: The Bird Walk Cabanas are on the other side of a creek, across a raised bridge, and are more private...

This is an amazing place. The setting is fantastic--tucked deep in the forest. The facilities are wonderful. The individual cabanas are extremely well designed. No space is wasted, but they do not feel restricting. They fit into the surroundings spectacularly. The staff is top-notch. We felt like friends immediately, but we never felt crowded or over-directed. The food--served family style--was very good and always plentiful. The tours are extremely well done. I could go on. If you can visit this place, you should.

We stayed at Pooks Hill for 3 nights on our honeymoon and had the most amazing time! Mike picked us up from the airport and took us to the zoo. He also accompanied us to Guatamala when we went to visit the Tikal Temples. He was lovely and very knowledgable. As was Isadoro our guide at the lodge who took us tubing, on night walks and bird walks. He also came to Tikal with us. Kat and Dave were absolutely fantastic, very welcoming. Everyones knowledge and personality made sure we had the most unbelievable time and did things we never thought we would do. The lodge is amazing, the food was great and the rooms made you really feel you were in the middle of the rainforest! Would reccomend to everyone.

Room Tip: The two lodge rooms that are further in the forest are amazing.
