Due to the owners being super friendly! We had a private room with bathroom for $25US a night. The room was very basic, towels given, no locks. The walls are very thin! Be warned. You can hear everything going on, just like living in somebody's house. It was very noisy outside too, so we didn't sleep well here. There is a communal fridge which was nice. If you ask, the owners will let you use their dishware as well! They are really nice people. Thank you.

the room (shared bathroom, plentiful hot water, $25) was tiny, the single bed and fan filled it completely, but it opened onto a cute private balcony overlooking the yard and the weather was too revolting to go looking any further. i was a bit disappointed at not being offered any safer location to lock up my bicycle than a wooden post in the street but at that stage my bike and i really weren't getting along so well and i guess i thought a bit of wanton vandalism would serve it right.
that being said, i was quite happy in this hostel until the internet went out in the afternoon. i questioned the owner about it and he took the most extraordinary offense, shouting and waving his arms about like a little banshee until i walked away wondering what i had done wrong. by mutual agreement i vacated the room the following day (no option of obtaining a refund and leaving that day; the mere suggestion sparked off another bout of theatrics) and took a room at a different hotel which is where i discovered the livid red bites on my arms and torso.
my bicycle survived the night and, with the aid of a tube of grease, we are working things out.

Room Tip: of the 4 upstars rooms that share a bathroom the first on the left contained the carnivores.

The Hi-et is super cheap ($12.50 for a small private room with shared bathroom and small private veranda) and very clean (cleaned daily with change of sheets/towels etc). I like that the room had coat hangers and place to hang stuff b/c everyday I seemed to have wet or incredibly sweaty clothes I needed to dry out! It also has a great location in the middle of San Ignacio. It is a minutes walk to the main street, tour offices, restaurants etc. and I liked that it was right close to the busier roads so there was no dark streets or alleys to walk through at night. It was a little strange at first b/c the hostel is located inside the owners home so I wasn't quite sure what was "home" and what was "common area". Note that on the front side every room has their own balcony but it's more closed in and isolated, where on the back end of the house, there is a little bit more open common space so it's easier to meet new people and hang out...I wish I had known that a bit earlier into my stay. This place was simple but really recommended as a great, comfortable place to sleep and leave your junk while you're out and about exploring the area's highlights, which is what you'll be doing anyways!

You have to enter the hostel through the living room of the owner, which gives a safe feeling. The owners are very friendly people. The place is cheap, clean and you have your own little balcony. There's WIFI available. But the room and bathroom are really small. There's no guest kitchen available, but some nice restaurants close by. Very much noise from the street below early in the morning. It actually feels as if you're sleeping in the middle of the street. There was a road deviation at the time we were there, maybe that's why all traffic came through this street. The rooms tend to get very hot during the day and the ventilator gives only a little relief. In general we loved our stay here and spend almost a week at Hi-Et guesthouse.

We loved it here. We originally planned on just staying two nights and then trying another place, but we quickly changed out minds. The staff is awesome- especially the little old man who runs the place. They have a beautiful home that you walk through to get to the "hotel" portion, where you can get a room with 2 beds and your own bathroom for $10 (per person). There is a shared balcony on both ends of the hotel, and a shared kitchen which comes in handy! Free internet was also available. Highly recommend if you are staying in San Ignacio- Short walk to anywhere you need to go!

Room Tip: You can hear everything going on because the top of the walls are a type of lattice- FYI!

Stayed there on two occasions in March 2012. Owners were friendly. Rooms were clean with their own bathroom with shower. There was a veranda in the front and back to chill out and have some quiet time during the hot hours of the day. Ask for a room at the back to avoid the early morning traffic especially on Saturday mornings...it's market day in town. It is central to all restaurants.

Room Tip: Take the room at the back on the left for the most quiet room.

Stayed at this hostel on my way back through San Ignacio after a month in Guatemala.Owner is Junior, whose wife was away at the time, so maybe she is nicer and more intelligent than him. Initially Junior was merely abrupt and unfriendly but things degenerated rapidly.....when he discovered that 4 weeks before I had stayed at another hostel in San Ignacio which was unfortunately for me infested with huge bed bugs!
He was so paranoid that he assumed that 4 weeks later I was bringing them to his hotel and started yelling at me when I explained that firstly the other hostel was infested with them, I was merely the innocent victim and that it was impossible for me to be carrying them after 4 weeks at other hostels. I explained that being a zoologist, I understood the life cycle of these particular insects and politely suggested he could use the internet to get accurate and up to date information on the topic which he obviously needed. He really started yelling then and ordered me to leave thenext day. He is unfortunately a very unpleasant and ignorant little man!!!
