Last week my husband and i took our 7 & 9 yo children on a trip through Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. One of the places we chose to spend some time was The Lodge at Chaa Creek. We stayed at the Macal River Camp and it was awesome. From the wonderful hospitality of our host Dosio and his family to the staff at The Lodge at Chaa Creek, each encounter we had the staff were courteous and went above and beyond to help us out. The food was beyond delicious, i saw my kids eat things I had never imagined they would even try and loved every bit of it!!. The casita's were well maintained and very comfortable. We fell asleep each night to the sound of cicada's, birds and howling monkeys. And arose each morning to the smell of a delicious breakfast being carefully prepared and the sound of birds and various other wildlife on the property. We did the horseback riding expedition and it was great!! The guide was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the flora and fauna of Belize. This is definitely a place we hope to return to someday.

Room Tip: Staying at the Macal River Camp is more economical but allows you to participate in all the amenitie...

We chose to stay in the Chaa Creek Casitas. This trip was to celebrate my son's 40th birthday. We stayed in the translucent yellow canvass roofed sleeping accommodations. We loved the group breakfasts and dinners. We hiked the river view path the 12 minutes between the main lodge and pool to and from our casitas one to two times a day.. One of the joys of sleeping in the screened houses was the ability to hear the rainforest birds each morning and to hear the howler monkeys echo over the river valley each evening. We enjoyed talking to the family that cooked, cleaned and answered our questions about touring and Belize. We chose to visit the Belize Zoo, a Mayan temple site and the ATM Mayan ceremonial site. The Guides must be licensed by the state and they are very well trained and helpful. We feel fortunate that we chose to stay in the casitas on Chaa Creek.

Room Tip: Choose a casita near the path to the bathhouse. Our high output head lamps were very helpful.

We stayed at the Macal River Camp in the middle of April. The tents were comfortable; the bathrooms were clean; the howler monkeys were LOUD. If you're looking for an outdoor jungle experience, I really can't recommend this place highly enough, Dosio and his family were great hosts. The food was excellent and Dosio was so helpful spotting birds right in the camp! There is not electricity in the tents, which means it can get hot. But, you can escape to the pool at the Lodge if it gets too hot. The tents have screen walls and twin beds.

We did not book our tours through Chaa Creek, we went through Belize Nature Travel, which I also highly recommend.

We stayed two nights at the camp. When my husband needed to move to a cabin room, it was handled smoothly. We enjoyed both. Saw wonderful birds and espcially enjoyed seeing parrots in flight and toucans eating above our heads in the trees. We went horseback riding on the premises.

We had 4 wonderful days at Chaa Creek last week (April 2014). Chaa Creek is a well-established lodge, one of the first in Belize. I happened on it during my first visit to Belize 17 years ago, although I was staying elsewhere. It has only improved with time. The setting is fantastic - screened cabana type rooms overlook the rainforest and river. There is no AC but there is no need for it due to excellent fans and river breezes. During our stay, a pair of aracari (a small type of Toucan) were nesting just outside our room so it was great to see them each morning at daybreak. The food at the lodge is excellent, especially the fruit and vegetables (often grown on property). There are three reasons why I rate Chaa Creek so highly, however. FIrst, the service is excellent in every respect, from the driver who picks you up at the airport to the restaurant staff. Second, there are many options for activities. We did several, and recommend all of them but in particular the Barton Creek cave canoe, the downstream canoe trip and the day in Tikal. Third, Chaa Creek is truly eco-focused. The lodge provides reusable water bottles to you at check in for use during your stay. I didn't see any plastic bottles during my days there, which is not the case in other beautiful places I have stayed. There is no AC, as mentioned above, and there are no bugs, but not due to chemicals. Instead, there is a healthy local bat and lizard population that control bugs, and while I normally am a prime target for bugs/mosquitos, I left with no bites. We did not take our kids (8 and 6) on this trip but Chaa Creek would be a great place for kids, and there were many families with kids visiting during our stay.

Tranquil, yet family oriented. Felt like we were almost all alone although there were many other families, couples, mother/daughter pairings, this place is for everyone. If you want to be adventurous and go cave tubing, zip lining, canoeing, hiking, etc, you can. On the other hand, if you care to be more quiet, sit by the pool, visit the butterfly farm and generally relax, this is ALSO the place to be. We are a family of 6 and stayed in the Orchard Villa which suited us perfectly! Two queen beds and a loft upstairs with 2 more twin beds. Bathroom upstairs and also down making it convenient. We did our share of relaxing at the pool which the kids loved but we also took advantage of the great concierge at Chaa. Touring the Mayan ruins, day tripping to Tikal, Guatemala, zip lining and tubing through the caves and more. And the nice part about the end of each day, was coming back to the lounge and bar area to relax, use the wifi, have a drink and unwind. Food and drink at the Mariposa, along with all of the servers, was wonderful! All in all, a great experience!

Our family stayed at the Macal River Camp March15-17 in a tent with 4 comfortable twin beds. The tents, separate bathrooms, and showers were all clean. Breakfast and dinner were provided and were good. Purified water was also provided, so we regularly filled up our water bottles before our adventures. We went canoeing, hiking, swimming, and visited nearby Mayan ruins. Night time is interesting: I'm a light sleeper and so felt a little sleep-deprived by the time we checked-out. I packed ear plugs but decided not to use them because I wanted to experience the jungle and all it's nocturnal noise. Everyone else slept pretty well. We could have easily stayed at Chaa Creek, but I wanted my children, ages 16 and 21, to have the camping experience. They loved it! It is nice to have the amenities of Chaa Creek a few minutes away. We all would have liked to stayed longer, but we can always go back again. I would highly recommend staying here, particularly if you are active and love the great outdoors.
