Yes, we were a little dissapointed that the pool was in repair, but were told up front upon
arrival, the staff immediately offered consessions, to take you to another resort to use their pool, or
THEY OFFERED a 20% discount off the bill, both seemed very fair. With that being said the staff is the best, always asking if there was anything else they can do for you. All meals were excellent , both breakfasts & dinners, different meals , always fresh. We took two tours, Caracol ruins & ATM
Cave exploring, both outstanding! Totally enjoyed our stay with them..Go visit them!

Do not believe all the photos you see. We booked this place based on some TripAdvisor research and the photos we saw... While the grounds are nice, the rest is a different story. Upon arrival we were informed that the pool broke in half. I am not really sure what that means, but the beautiful pool you see in the pictures does not exist. The room smelled very strongly of mold. My boyfriend and I developed serious congestion after two nights of sleeping in the room. While the rooms were very clean, they were incredibly dilapidated. It is obvious that the owners do not pump any money back into this place. The ceiling in our room seemed moldy and was bowing inwards. At one point we had no water either. It was fixed quickly.

The grounds of this hotel are gorgeous, but we weren't really encouraged to explore them at all. When we were in town, several locals told us stories about Maya Mountain that were somewhat concerning. We noticed the owner was a little strange and pushy about his breakfast, but we weren't expecting what others told us. Apparently the hotel has 38 acres of land, but the owners are very protective over this. Many people think that there is something else on the grounds like a ruin or a cave that people are working on, excavating etc. There was a night watchman who seemed to watch over us and everyone else closely. He was very friendly, but it did seem suspect. The area is very safe and it doesn't really seem necessary to have a night watchman. The staff were all incredibly friendly, but we talked to other people who used to work at the resort and they seemed like they had been quite unhappy working there.

Aside from this, there were other service issues that were strange. Breakfast was basically forced on our friends. They ordered a coffee and received a huge breakfast that they did not want. It was also full of flies... not one or two, but several flies. They constantly tried to get us on a meal plan, but it was incredibly over priced considering you can eat for a few dollars just in town. There is no shuttle to town at all which wouldn't be a problem if there were services at Maya Mountain. There aren't. There is no pool, no excursions without booking with a tour company, no bar, no televisions, nothing. There were thirty year old board games. I understand from others that drinking on premises is also discouraged although I never confirmed this.

While some of this is rumor from locals and others is just our experience, the bottom line is the mold alone was a serious problem for health alone.

We are shocked by this report. Certainly if we would have learnt about this while the guests were here we would have done whatever possible to make them happy. We feel that they were angry due to being surprised by the pool being down and contrived a review which is lacking truth in order to hurt us.

How helpful can a review be to others planning their next trip when it is admitted that most of the comments are based on rumors?

It is true that our 24’ “under deck” pool unexpectedly blew out on the 25th of June. We spent 3 solid days searching in Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico for a replacement to no avail. On the 28th of July we paid for a pool in Texas and it left 3 days later for Belize. It is on schedule and we expect it to be operational by the 15th of July. Running a resort in the 3rd world does pose challenges even to experienced operators.

We attempted to contact all our guests and their booking agencies of what had occurred and gave them the details of compensation packages that were being offered. Some guests were already traveling and could not be contacted. We feel that this is the case with these guests. Certainly no one likes to be surprised.

In an effort to compensate our in-house guests for inconveniences caused by this unforeseen circumstance we have made arrangements with two nearby hotels to host our guests at their pool until we can have our pool back. We have arranged to cover transportation and pool fees. For those wishing not to go somewhere else for a swim, we have offered complimentary full breakfast daily or 20% discount on their accommodations. Our guests have been very understanding and have welcomed the compensation packages that they have been offered.
Our lodge has been undergoing renovations for over 3 months with many rooms freshly painted, new mattresses purchased, and lots of other investments. Our rooms are cleaned thoroughly and inspected before guests check-in to them. The room this client had does not have mold in it. This is contrived.

The grounds are gorgeous and we do encourage guests to walk the trails or even hire a guide to do a morning birding walk. All portions of the property are accessible and during the daytime gates are open to visit the entire 104 acres of our property. Part of it is being developed for home lot sales by the cliff-side overlooking the town to the west and the Maya Mountains to the South. This is over ½ mile from the lodge but it is interesting to visit. A visit to our riverfront is also interesting. We close the gates at night to protect the property from looters and hunters.
The Belize hotel standards law requires us to have a night watchman. Our watchman is friendly and well-liked by the guests.

We take great care that our food is safe and have professionals working in the kitchen and dining room whose job it is to guarantee the highest standards. I simply can’t believe that there is truth in this claim.

All guests are oriented to our dining room policies upon arrival and details are also available in our in- room folder. We, like many lodges, are not an open restaurant but rather a dining room which cooks meals for our guests based on counts of guests eating. We ask all guests to let us know what they will do about meals so that we will be prepared for them. Perhaps cross checking with this guest might have been misunderstood but most guests understand. Our reputation for good food usually precedes the arrival of most guests.

Our guests have access throughout the day to a concierge who can give maps for their own adventures, help them rent a car, book tours, recommend places to eat in town and much more. Guests are not isolated and we are readily available to call a taxi anytime for them. The town is only 5 minutes away by taxi. Free WiFi in all rooms and public areas allows for research while here.

For over three decades we have had a B.Y.O.B policy (Bring Your Own Bottle); i.e. beer, alcohol, etc. Although we do not sell alcohol, we do allow our guests to consume alcoholic beverages onsite. We encourage them to pick up their favorite spirits on the way from the airport to the hotel, or while in town. We provide our guests with glasses, ice, and whatever else they may need to feel comfortable. We provide a guest refrigerator in the dining area to keep their beers, wine and mixers cold plus three of our larger cottages are equipped with full kitchenettes including fridges.

In summary we try to be respectful and considerate of all of our guests. We enjoy our work and thrive on making our guests happy. We wish that these guests had consulted with us if they were unhappy. They certainly would have been listened to and provided for in a professional and caring manner.

The only reason I am not giving an overall 5-star review is because on the first night the food was sub-par. However, after I requested Belzian-specific dishes they changed the menu to my specific request. This just demonstrated how excellent and responsive the staff was. Furthermore, Elmer helped us with anything we could ever need. He even checked up with us after we left the resort. The tours were excellent and well worth the money. Sure, the food is more expensive then out I'm San Ignacio town, but it was still very good. And if you don't want the resort meals then just tell them and go into town to Hannah's or one of the other great restaurants. And, I have to disagree with anyone who said that Maya Mountain breakfast is not good...I have NEVER had such excellent fruit or juice in my entire life. They know exactly how to pick the freshest fruit around because what they serve during breakfast is literally the best fruit I've ever had in my life!

Although the rooms were a bit rustic, we enjoyed our stay here, the grounds were amazing and the staff was very responsive. I'm a bit gluten intolerant and since one of the owners is also gluten-free I got some of the best food I'd had since we got to Belize. The pool actually collapsed while we were there, so hopefully they will invest in a cement pool next time around.

We are installing a new pool which is scheduled to be functioning before July 15. Guest currently booked are offered a choice in conpensation for this unexpected event including 1. Free transportation and vouchers for a nearby pool 2. A 20% discount or 3. Free full breakfast for 2 daily. We wish this had not occurred but our guest have been very understanding and see our commitment to them.

We spend several days at Maya Mountain Lodge and we had a wonderful time. The grounds were lovely, the workers and managers were very friendly, the rooms were clean. Im not going to lie, if you are expecting a 3 or 4 star hotel, the rooms may not meet your standards. The rooms are small and kind of dark, it was hard to maneuver around in the room if you had a lot of luggage.
The staff was wonderful, couldn't have been more friendly. We ran into issues with our flight connecting to Belize and lost a day. We had scheduled MML to pick us up and bring us to the lodge. They still arrived to pick up my father and then sent someone for us the next day. (only charging us for one trip)
The pool was perfect after a hot, hot day exploring the ruins and the jungles.
The food was fabulous! We had breakfast there every day and we ate 2 dinners there as well. ! of the dinners was Belizean/Mexican food with a variety of dishes and an amazing soup! The second night was kind of a BBQ.
ALso, it was in a great location, 5 minutes from town (just a quick) (and scary haha) taxi ride.
All in all, I would highly recommend this lodge.

Great place to stay if you're planning trips out of San Ignacio. The lodge is just a few minutes away from town but once you get onto the beautiful grounds you feel like you're miles away. We stayed 2 nights in one of the traditional hotel styles rooms, which was small but very clean and comfortable. The meals were one of the highlights of our stay, excellent food from their kitchen where they host a cultural culinary school. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with local directions and suggestions for activities.

Room Tip: Cottages are more expensive but give you a nice option for a larger room.

We spent 1 week at Ambergris Caye before heading to Maya Mountain Lodge. We were met promptly at the water ferry for the scenic and informative drive to San Ignacio. The driver stopped en route so we could pick up some wine for dinner. We arrived after lunch but the kitchen staff prepared a great last-minute lunch for us. Dinner every night were traditional meals from the different local cultures. One night there was even a cooking demonstration on how are meal was prepared. There were some nights where the main course was fish which I do not care for but alternate delicious entrees were made fresh for me. The entire staff could not have been more gracious or hospitable. The private hammocks on the porch was a great relaxing way to digest your dinner. There is a massage therapist on site and I would highly recommend one especially if you go to ATM. We booked our Tikal and ATM excursions through the lodge and could not have had a better time. While in San Ignacio be sure to visit the Iguana Sanctuary in town, they are doing great work there and more Iguanas than I have ever seen in one spot.
