“Great location, excellent staff”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

San Ignacio Resort was the perfect place for us to stay for 3 nights. It is near several of the Mayan ruins. Close enough to the town center to walk, but far enough away that it wasn't noisy. The pool area is beautiful and so inviting after a day of climbing around the ruins. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There was construction going on while we were there but they were very considerate about when they started and stopped. I'm interested in what it will look like when it is finished.

We booked a room at the San Ignacio Resort, at the last minute having discovered that our "Eco- Lodge" where we were planning to stay was an absolute dump ! We always make every effort when traveling to find nice "local" places and avoid hotels owned by large corporations in an effort to keep the proceeds of their labor IN the country. Belize can be a bit of a challenge if you are like-minded. Lots of disappointments along the way. The San Ignacio Resort Hotel stood out as a place where someone WAS truly making the effort to please their guests. The hotel is quite beautifully situated on a cliff overlooking the river and jungle. A variety of rooms have verandas off a charming garden with hammocks and chairs to enjoy. The poolside and restaurant are just beautiful at night overlooking the town, candles flickering along the grand stair down to the pool. The restaurant, (although a bit slow by American standards), did not disappoint, in terms of the effort of the charming staff to do their best, and the food which turned out to be worth the wait at every meal. We had every breakfast, a lunch of two and several dinners at the "Running W" steakhouse on the terrace. Each meal was beautifully prepared and presented. We sampled several desserts. All of them delicious. The hotel is a five minute walk from the center of town where we enjoyed the local open air market selling, tropical fruit, drinks, simple clothing and bags, handmade inexpensive jewelry and trinkets. No one was nagging us to buy and everyone in the various stalls was sweet and helpful. The Iguana project was fun for our children and we enjoyed the nature walk, both adjacent to the hotel grounds. Overall I must say; in spite of the somewhat surprisingly high price considering this was Belize, and underwhelming appointments of the rooms, we were pleased by the very genuine effort of EVERY staff member to be helpful, courteous, and make our stay special. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the region of Belmopan.

Room Tip: Get a room with a terrace off the garden facing the river.

Great place to stay - I didn't give it excellent because it was under construction while we were there. Otherwise - staff came early to make us a breakfast and lunch to go when we were going out on an excursion, garden was nice. Iguanas were interesting. Pool was a great place to cool down after a sweaty day of hiking. Altogether enjoyable, if a little pricey.

Room Tip: Don't think there are bad rooms here. Nice small hotel with a friendly atmosphere.

I booked this hotel over the internet, and had to judge the place by the pictures and reviews. I must say that it met, and exceeded all our expectations! This was our first trip to Belize, and came for a family event. I'm not sure what we expected, but were surprised by many things. The one great and memorable thing was this hotel! It was just as the pictures showed, the staff was fantastic, the food excellent, and our tours were amazing! Our only "complaint" was the cost. I booked an "all inclusive" package, as we were not there a long time, and I didn't want to worry about any part of the trip. We found everything very expensive and the service is usually quite slow. Considering that we move at a much faster pace in the U.S., I wasn't too concerned about that part of it. If I were to ever return to San Ignacio, I would most certainly stay here again, but next time, I would be a bit more adventurous and book things as needed. Also, it is very easy to walk into town, and there are many restaurants close by!

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are very nice, as you can sit outside, or lay in the hammock! I did not care f...

San Ignacio Resort stay was excellent. The staff were friendly, attentive and provided for all of our needs. Ted picked us up from the Belize airport and drove us to San Ignacio Resort. The road from the airport was the same as we remembered from our last trip 10 years ago, a highway with speed bumps. Checked into San Ignacio Resort hotel and Marilyn showed us to our garden view room. Room was always clean, quiet – garden view, ground floor, with patio, table and chairs and a hammock. Between AC and ceiling fan we always kept the room at a comfortable temperature.

We expected bug problems, but bugs were no problem at all. The advanced notice about the Hotel construction was good, so we can’t complain about the little bit of noise, which didn’t bother us anyway. Waiter Carlos was very good. Waiter Elmer told us to say Hi to his brother Elwin, who is a waiter at Ramon’s is San Pedro, which we did. Front desk Marilyn and Maria were very friendly and helpful. Concierge Onil was very helpful and made sure we were prepared for excursions. He set up our van ride from the airport, and the plane ride when we left for San Pedro. He also set up tours for ATM, zip line and cave tubing, Caracol, and Tikal.

Free coffee was available before the restaurant opened at 7am. We took the Iguana tour at the hotel and took plenty of pictures feeding the Iguana, and of the Iguana crawling all over our body.

We ate at the hotel and also in town at; Flayva’s, The Wing Stop, Hode’s Place and Ko Ox Han Nah.
All places were good, but my favorite was Ko Ox Han Nah. People in San Ignacio are very friendly and “expect” you to be friendly back. We were apprehensive when a local offered us his table at “The Wing Stop” for dinner. But that is how the locals are, just very friendly. Even a dog took a liking to us and followed us on our walk around the town.

We walked into town to the Saturday market along the river. Then we proceeded another 333 steps (per the sign) to see where Hode’s restaurant is. We walked up to Cahal Pech, a Mayan ruin. It should have been about a 15 minute walk, but we missed the turn off and walked a little too far. There was no sign, and we finally asked for directions. We found the direction sign at Cahal Pech. They temporarily removed it from the street while they were doing some road maintenance. If you walk past the gas station, you walked too far. We took a relaxing stroll and self-guided tour thru Cahal Pech. Weather was 85, sunny, no rain everyday.

On our last day, Dave, the Scotsman, drove us 10 minutes to Maya Flats air field. Gave the attendant our names and they gave us our wooden reusable boarding pass with Coca-cola advertisement printed on them. The 12 passenger plane left with 8 passengers. 1 lucky passenger got to site in the co-pilot seat. The plane flew low so we got good views of the jungle, river, water and islands. The flight originally was schedule for 1 stop in Belize City, but we ended up stopping at Belmopan and Caye Caulker as well. Each stop was about 5 minutes, and the entire flight took about an hour and a half.

We had an amazing four nights at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. The hotel itself was nice and we enjoyed having a room with a balcony, a pool to relax in after our busy days, and the good food. The staff was really helpful and planned all of our excursions for us. We would definitely come back!

Stayed at this hotel for four nights with my mom for our annual mother daughter trip. When we first arrived we were a little weary about passing the town and the area of the hotel being two women traveling alone. However after 24 hours of being at the resort we fell in absolute love! The grounds are impeccably kept up and the restaurant was delicious. We really loved the staff at the resort esp elmer, ederson, vanessa and carlos. Extremely helpful and always smiling. The pool is refreshing and the hotel is a 15 minute walk to some ruins. We ate here three time a day on the beautiful balcony overlooking their jungle. we participated in the iguana tour with bert and felt safe and had a lot of laughs. Enjoy the hammock outside and take advantage of the pool, the staff always brought us out free summer drinks while we relaxed!

Room Tip: Get a balcony room, eat at the resort.
