“You can find a nicer lodge for the same price”
Reviewed 18 March 2011

I just returned home from a vacation to Belize and stayed in duPlooy's for a night. Unfortunately, I think that they charge FAR more than they are worth. The place is very run down and honestly has the feel of a motel, rather than a hotel/lodge. You can stay at places that are just as nice as this (or even nicer) for far less money.

We did not stay at the lodge but instead visited their fantastic garden situated on 45 acres which has 2000 plant species. This garden was meticulously kept and the labeling was maintained. The guidebook that they give you for a self guided tour was quite informative.
Afterwards, we had some pops on their outdoor veranda where we proceeded to see numerous exotic birds eating from a large fruit tray. Whatever tree was hanging over the veranda also was a bird magnet.

We wished we had decided to stay there.

We loved our bungalow at the duPlooy Lodge. I spent a lot of time relaxing in
the hammick on the front porch looking out at the jungle. The service was
fabulous and I loved all the prepared meals that were served in style,
especially the fish and shellfish dishes. Everyone was so helpful and laid back
so we felt right at home. They have several great options of things to do while
you're there. We toured the Tikal ruins in Guatemala, tried the rip lines which
are so much fun and even rode horses to some Belize ruins. All in all it was a
wonderful trip and I would go back in a heart beat.

We traveled to Belize in Feb, 2011 and customized our itinerary with duPlooy's of San Ignacio. They took care of absolutely everything. We had never traveled to Central America before and to be honest were a bit apprehensive. We are not backpackers, simply a family looking for some adventure in a comfortable setting. After some on-line research our request to duPlooy's was: 3 nites at their lodge in San Ignacio (including cave tubing and Zip-lining), travel into Tikal, Guatemala with an overnight at the Tikal Jungle Lodge, 4 nights at Lara Beya (including 2 days of diving). duPlooy's customized an excellent package for us, adding a stop at the Inland Blue hole (on route to Placentia) and a Monkey River Tour ( while in Placencia). All guides and transfers were included.Food while at duPlooy's was included in our stay and was excellent everyday. They had a menu breakfast, and supper choices (usually 3) was posted each day. Breakfast included fresh breads and fresh orange juice, dinner a soup or salad and dessert. The Jungle lodge is quaint, the road in rough (note: we are in the country and it was just after a lot of rain), so it was nice to have all we needed on site. They have a bar for afternoons or evening drinks and lazy hammocks to relax in. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful, an indication of a well run ship!! Although all this was awesome, I think the best part of our experience was the guides. From the moment of pick-up at the airport to departure all guides were knowledgeable and friendly, proud ambassadors of their country. Most notable was Ferman from duPlooy's jungle lodge. He was patient and gentlemanly always available to answer our questions. He is a biologist, and seemed to specialize in Birds, which was a really neat for us all, as we can rarely find rare birds in trees and his skill had us finding them far way. It was Ferman who accompanied us cave tubing, pointing out all the interesting features inside the caves while also letting us have a peaceful ride down the river. duPlooy's packed an delicious picnic lunch for us on that day and our girls were so impressed when we came back from changing out of our suits and Ferman had our picnic table all set.
We were a little tentative about crossing over to Tikal, but the guide who was with us put any fears to rest. Due to regulations in Guatemala, Belize drivers are not permitted to continue on to Tikal, so we had to walk through the border, show our documents and meet up with our new driver and Tikal Guide on the other side. This all went smoothly with a duPlooy's diver at our side who introduced us to our driver on the other side. The reverse upon our return to the border the next day.
Our time in Tikal was a breathtaking experience and I will write a separate review for our experience there.
After 4 nites in the Jungle, Ferman drove us through the Belize country side on the Hummingbird Highway to our next destination at Lara Beya, on the Coast in Placentia. I will write a separate review for our stay there as well.
I have written a review of the dive company we used as well, Ocean Pro Placencia.
Overall duPlooy's did not disappoint. They arranged our entire Holiday, and put us at ease. FYI - I would say we choose moderately priced holidays, and this fit the bill, your money goes along way in Belize.

I have been to DuPlooys 10 times and I love it every time. Rain or shine I love the laid back atmosphere and the real jungle experience of being outside with the wildlife, the beautiful plants, the animals and most of all the wide variety of birds. The best bird guides, Philip and Fermin, are available for amazing walks around the gardens and grounds. It is not unusual to see 20 or more different species in an hour or two.
The staff was extremely accommodating and helpful. Everyone was eager to give a hand to my friend who was on oxygen and needed some help getting around with his heavy equipment. All the staff was respectful and pleasant.

All of the staff were helpful and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. Meals were excellent, and we enjoyed the other guests. The gardens next door are exceptional. The only blip was a wobbly transfer to Belize City: details of an email our travel agent sent to the Lodge weren't transmitted to our driver, which caused some uncertainty, but it was quickly resolved.

We spent a week in DuPlooys and everything was more than we expected. The best feature at DuPlooys is the amazing staff, friendly, efficient, professional..The easy-to-talk-to Noel was patiently waiting for us at the airport, though our flight was 4 hours late.
We visited the mayan-sites, Xunantunich, Tikal, Caracol and each time the guides knew a lot about the mayan history. My husband is very interested in mayan history and has read a lot about them but the guides offered him much new information. And to see the sites, to climb them was an experience that is hard to beat. Edgar in Tikal,George in Xunantunich and Philip in Caracol and Lake birding became almost as friends to us. The restaurant staff fullfilled all our wishes. Edwin had the coffee ready for us, as we are heavy coffee drinkers, the two guys at the bar learned our Finnish names quickly.
The food was always carefully made, fresh and tasty ingredients. The young lady at the restaurant was always smiling no matter how long the hours were.
No Tv, no radio, no phones, just the voices from the jungle. We are going to miss that back home.. Leena and Antti Vilhonen, Finland
