We have just returned from a 6 day stay at duPlooy's . We absolutely loved it! The grounds are gorgeous and they connect with the Belize Botanical Gardens so there is so much space to wander and explore. The rooms are basic and clean but honestly we were only in our rooms to sleep. We spent most of our time on the bird deck where there are plenty of spots to sit and relax and enjoy a Belikin beer while watching the birds that they feed daily. In the evening you can hand feed the Kinkajoos bananas off the bird deck. This was definitely a highlight for us! We felt the food was outstanding. They have a fantastic variety and the menu changes daily with 3 dinner options, along with a salad and soup choice, plus dessert. In the entire week of eating there was only one repeat . (A banana chocolate cake and there were no complaints of this repeat!) Each night was a different, soup, entirely different salad, and even different breads offered each morning for breakfast. Food is a very important part of our vacation so I feel it is important to say that the lodge, (even though it is remote and eco conscience) offers some unexpectedly wonderful cuisine. The staff was very friendly and helpful with anything we needed. Don't be afraid to ask! During the week, we had several special requests and they were always eager to accommodate. The guides were also amazing. We had Noel for most of the week and we just loved him! He figured out quickly our laid back vibe and matched all of our excursions to our particular pace. He even suggested we change our cave tubing day to a day that there were no cruise ships docked and this made the experience that more incredible and personal because there were less crowds. Take a guided tour of the Botanical Gardens. We had Willie as our guide (one of the garden's caretakers), and he shared many stories with us of his Mayan heritage . We went canoeing from the lodge into town. This was so peaceful and scenic. I highly recommend it! We also went horseback riding, tubing down the Macal River, explored Che Chem Ha cave, went ziplining, and visited many of the Mayan ruin sites. El Pillar is a fabulous place to go not only for the Mayan history, but also for the wildlife and birds. Overall our trip to Belize was a great adventure. If you are willing to step just a bit out of your comfort zone, Duplooy's will offer you a rare jungle experience that you will never forget. We even heard howler monkeys calling at night. I highly recommend this place!! I only have one suggestion, because they are so environmentally friendly, they do not offer bottled water at Duplooy's. There is plenty of filtered water offered 24 hrs a day at the bar in a large water jug you can use yourself. but bring a water bottle! We ended up refilling plastic water bottles that we had bought it town but our only regret was not bringing sturdier reusable water bottles.

Thanks so much for your great review and, comments about the staff and food. Our staff truly does care about taking care of our guests and positive comments, rather than making them complacent, only make them want to try even harder.

My wife and I stayed in Bungalow 11 and the room was great. In the bungalows, you are right on the elevated walkway and the jungle is right outside your door, which provides great bird viewing opportunities. The property is meticulously landscaped and there are plenty of hiking trails to explore. Also, it abuts the botanical gardens and that provides hours worth of exploration. Finally, it is a short walk down to the river where you can jump in a canoe and paddle down stream.

The arcari toucans will be hanging out all day by the bar where the staff puts out fresh fruit on the food tray affording plenty of photo opportunities. There are also many other birds that show up to make it in your trip scrapbook.

The highlight of the entire Belize trip has come so far at duPlooy's where we got to see and hand-feed the kinkajou that came out at night. These animals are fantastic and unlike anything you have likely seen before and they will take a banana right from your hand. Now, my wife and I are not fans of places where you create unnatural environments by feeding the wildlife and creating dependency, but these animals did not seem to be dependent on the tourist - they merely came in for an evening banana and then decided to head out for the night.

The only reason I am giving them 4 and not 5 stars is because the food is a limited menu and it is slightly expensive for the portions. As I am writing this review, my wife insists that I put down that she believes they are well worth 5 stars, and I can't really argue too much with that. The staff was also fantastic and they even let us ride back to town in the van with the staff, saving us a considerable taxi fee when we returned to San Ignacio.

My wife and I did only one night there and arrived early and stayed late into the afternoon the day we checked out. I flet like this was perfect for our time there, but we could probably have done 2 nights if we were not time crunched. If you can fit a day there in to you trip and don't mind spending a little extra money, I would strongly encourage it!

Thanks for your great review, but I'm inclined to disagree that even 2 nights is enough. There is so much to do right here and from here, that more nights are required to see it all.

Our dinner menu is limited to 3 entree choices, plus soup, salad and dessert because our lodge is small so, therefore, our audience is limited and being the conservation-minded folks we are, we don't like to waste food.

I have noted that you thought it expensive and have asked our wait staff to suggest that people can order from the lunch menu if they would like to spend a little less.

Thanks again,
Judy duPlooy

We just came back from a 4 night stay at duPlooys and are missing it already! I rarely write reviews but I am compelled to by the extraordinary visit we had. The staff was friendly and warm (one of the cooks even wrote me the recipe for their handmade tortillas), the rooms, while simple, were comfortable and clean, and the food delicious! The lodge is nicely designed and inspired by it's beautiful surroundings. You really feel a part of nature there surrounded by the rainforest and the Macal River. We were delighted to feed bananas to the adorable kinkajous in the evening (my daughters favorite) and sip delicious coffee in the mornings while watching toucans and other beautiful birds on the deck. The tours were incredible, particularly the ATM cave led by our guide Patrick who shared his vast knowledge of the cave, the Maya and his life growing up in Belize. He was absolutely charming and really made the tour for us…the cave experience is one of the most amazing things I've ever done. We also took the tour of Xunantunich via horseback riding. Emile led us through the forest and pointed out interesting trees and plants and we were met at the Maya site by another guide (Curly) who showed us around Xunantunich and was very informative about the history of the site, and also very friendly. That day was very hot (unusually hot everyone told us) but worth it all the same. After the tour we ate at a local restaurant, Bennys, where I had a bowl of delicious escabeche. We wish we had brought more water and also should have packed our own water bottles. duPlooys Lodge is very conservation minded, which I really appreciated. We also canoed down to San Ignacio one day and used the tubes to float down the Macal River. The Botanical Garden is also beautiful and nice to walk through. I cannot recommend duPlooys highly enough. We were so much more than satisfied with our stay!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Mopan Suite which had a nice sitting area, four bedrooms and a nice deck with a ham...

We stayed here for 3 nights. We loved the botanical garden and found the meals to be delicious. We loved the fresh baked bread and the huevos rancheros at breakfast. We had fun tubing on the river and exploring the grounds. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My son loved feeding bananas to the kinkajous and watching the birds eat melon by the bar.

Note the rooms have no AC. They do have ceiling fans and floor fans but it still can get pretty sticky.

Thanks so much for the good review of duPlooy's. I'm glad that more and more people seem to be staying around the lodge to explore the grounds and take advantage of the complimentary use of canoes and tubes, the botanic gardens and bird watching.

Awesome facility. Stayed in the river house with a large group of friends. My buddy got married in the orchid house there, which was so intimate and beautiful. The restaurant was some of the best food we had in Belize, and the gardens and surrounding jungle was beautiful. We also visited Xunantunich ruins, which were great, and ATM caves, which was one of the single coolest things I've ever done. If I ever visit Belize again, ill go to duplooys. Also stayed at caye caulker, and the snorkeling was great, but the locals on the island were terrible to be around.

We stayed at Duplooys for 4 nights and had plenty of things to do. We love to be active and found the tours they arranged to the ATM cave and Tikal and Xunantunich were well planned and extremely unique and fun and inexpensive. We also walked through the huge and diverse botanical gardens and canoed down the river to a medicinal garden. This is a great place to go for an active vacation, great food, friendly atmosphere, and an excellent value.

Room Tip: If you want a quieter and more modern room choose one closest to the Botanical garden, but these are...

Thanks for your review. The reason why our motto is "make sure you stay long enough" is because there are so many activities both on site and nearby, making Belize's Cayo District (and, of course, duPlooy's) a great place for your jungle vacation.
