“Jungle heaven!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

Judy, Patricia, Maysin, Fermin, Albert and the rest of the duPlooys family never cease to amaze! This is my 6th stay at duPlooys and each time they welcome our group with open arms and smiles. If we wish it, they make it happen. . . .and most importantly, with sincere hearts for connection with their guests. Each and every person is a great example of aligning one's beliefs with one's actions (the way they run the resort). From a quality perspective, rooms are very clean, spacious, well-kept and the food is beyond extra-ordinary --- fresh, tasty, great portions, variety.

Being a leader of a variety of visiting groups to Belize (teachers, high school students, study abroad courses), I've had the opportunity to visit many resorts in the Cayo District. DuPlooy's continues to be my preferred home away from home.

Our trip to Belize was amazing. DuPlooy’s was wonderful. We were a group of eleven raging in range from 2 years to 72 years. It was a challenge to find a destination that would make everyone happy. DuPlooy’s was perfect. The activities were great for all ages! They took such great care of us. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. There was so much to do. We spent 6 of our 13 days in Belize at DuPlooy’s and could have easily stayed the entire time. The DuPlooy’s staff took care of everything! From picking us up at the airport, scheduling all of our activities and providing transportation and, packing our lunches to taking us to our next destination. Not one of our excursions was a disappointment. The food was incredible and seven of us are vegetarians! Our only regret is not having enough time to see and do everything!

If I had to grade this trip, I wouid give it an A+++++.

We visited Belize for 10 days - all of which spent at Duplooy`s Jungle Lodge. My husband, our 2 daughters (11 and 14 years old) and I chose this vacation for a change of pace.

We LOVED it. We learned alot about the environment, sustainable tourism and ways we can change our habits at home. I will forever use pasta as straws from now on!! What a cool idea! This was both a totally enjoyable trip and subtly educational at the same time - learning by example.

We had THE BEST guides and drivers: Edgar, Oscar, Efeugo, Ramon, Noel, Philip and the horseback riding team: Iron and (I forget the other's name - really sorry). Everyone was really friendly and had such a great sense of humour. We are still laughing about some of the experiences we had with the guides :-) They made the trip truly enjoyable and memorable.

The frontdesk guys are wonderful: Eber, Firmin and the team helped us to select our excursions and were very knowledgeable in making the best use of our time. We visited Mayan ruins, caves, the zoo, the market, the Woman's Co-op, the Butterfly Ranch, horseback rode through the country-side, ate in 2 different towns, and thoroughly enjoyed each and every outing. And again, the staff and guides: always so pleasant and smiley! I was starting to get used to being called "Miss Charlotte" :-) --> so charming!

The meals were nothing less than a gourmet experience every day. Great job to John and all the kitchen staff. The waiters and bartenders were - you guessed it - AWESOME. Best local drinks and service par excellence by Kevin, Elvin, Ismael, Albert and Jose. These guys are truly made for the tourism industry. They made us feel extra special every time we saw them!

The grounds are kept beautifully groomed - immaculate really. The night walk guide was also really fun. We saw an armadillo, scorpion, wolf spiders, tarantulas beetles, etc. We heard an owl and many other creatures who come to life after the sun goes down.

The Botanic Garden is beautiful. We climbed the fire tower and from there, we could see for miles and miles. A must-see!

We loved the Woman's Co-op: made tortillas from corn nuggets right off the cob to something actually deliciously edible. Wow...who knew? We also made pottery items: toucan, dolphin and a traditional mask. The ladies at the co-op were great with kids and even arranged to have our pottery fired and delivered to us at DuPlooy's - well beyond the call of duty :-) Hospitality reigns here!

The owner, Judy Duplooy, is present and speaks to the guests directly to be sure everything is going smoothly and you are enjoying your stay. The personal touch is carried on by daughter Shayla and her husband, Chris. They gave us several pointers for shopping and were always nice to talk to.

Make sure you visit the San Ignacio market on Saturday. Go by canoe. If you get Noel for this activity. you can tell him you read about "Mr. Marc"...I am sure he will laugh!! We had such a good time :-)

What I really liked about this trip was meeting and talking to the local people. There is a friendliness and openness here that I have never experienced before. This was supposed to be the rainy season, yet it was sunny every day. With agriculture being so important in Belize, I left hoping it would rain so the farmers would have healthy crops. In the short time we were there, we bonded with so many people. We will definitely be back!

I will wrap it up, but just to repeat myself yet again - HOSPITALITY REIGNS HERE. We loved the trip and everyone. REALLY left with a nice feeling. Thanks for making our family vacation all that it was!

Thanks so much for your review and for mentioning almost everyone on our whole staff. I'm always impressed when people remember all of the names. And, if you were here every day, you would know that they are not just "putting it on" for tourists, but are genuine and truly do want you to like them and enjoy this little country.

Looking forward to seeing you when you come back.

We stayed at DuPlooy's in July 2014. The rooms were spacious and clean. The room we were in had a shared bathroom with the room next door which was great as we were traveling together. The bathroom was gorgeous with a walk in stone shower with multiple shower heads. The beds were clean and comfortable.

The food at the lodge was amazing. Our three course dinners were as beautiful as they were tasty. We even had a tamale making lesson one night. They packed lunches for our day trips as well.

The bar was open and welcoming. We spent the evening socializing in the public space. There is wifi in the bar as well. We also borrowed canoes and took a trip down the river. We saw lots of animals during our stay.

We loved the botanical gardens and learning about the local Maya culture. I would absolutely come back!

We spent three nights at DuPlooy's during our visit to Belize and it was lovely. We are avid birders and were happy to have a chance to go out with Phillip Mai one morning and explore the grounds. We even got to see a Keel Billed Toucan with him - our only sighting of Belize's national bird in Belize! Loved that the Collared Aricari Toucans came to the deck feeder in the mornings as well. We spent a lot of time out enjoying that deck, especially at happy hour!

The grounds are beautiful. We explored the gardens quite a lot while birding. I only wish the orchids had been in bloom while we were there! We also loved floating the river on the inner tubes - we were the only people on the river. It was such a fun, nice way to cool down!

We stayed in a lodge room and in the Tree House, and both were great. The Tree House has the coolest bathroom sink ever!

The folks at DuPlooy's helped us set up a trip to the ATM caves. It was a long day but an amazing experience see the Mayan artifacts and skeletons. It was more physically challenging than we thought it would be, though. Could have done without encountering Belize's most aggressive, poisonous snake on the trail, but the guide handled it, no one got hurt, and we're left with a great story now, right? We were leaving the next morning, and were worried our clothes and shoes wouldn't be dry (everything was wet after that trip), but they had security put our shoes in the generator room and housekeeping put our clothes in the dryer, and everything was ready to go when we were.

The folks at DuPlooy's also arranged to get us to our next destination across the Guatemalan border near Tikal, which was quite helpful.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it's somewhat far from town. Those who wish to experience more of the town of San Ignacio would probably not want to stay here. If you like relaxing, birding, and being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the jungle insects, this is the perfect place for you!

So, we lost a star by being remote. But I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. And yes, our lodge is remote, but that is intentional. If you want to spend time in town you can always stay there for a few days and at duPlooy's for a few days. That way you can experience all of what Cayo has to offer.

Of course, if remote is what you're looking for - duPlooy's is it!

Thanks so much for your review and for staying with us.

We stayed at DuPlooy's as part of our Honeymoon in Belize.

We could not have asked for a better time. It was perfect. From start to finish we were collected from the Airport and dropped off at our final destination. All the trips were arranged and there is so much to do, the tours were excellent. When we weren't busy we were able to relax in the impeccable lodge grounds and enjoy being in the jungle with the river floating through. You can tube gently along the river in the evening.

The food, including our packed lunches, was superb. Everything was full of flavour. In addition, the staff are all helpful and polite and offered great service.

We would love to come back again. My only advice is make sure you stay long enough!

Thanks for agreeing with our motto "make sure you stay long enough". There is so much to do in this part of Belize. But then you can always make several visits. First, your honeymoon and then back with the kids and then back on your own and then back with the grandkids.

We appreciate your comments.

I just returned from a 2 week Mother/Daughter trip to Belize, of which 8 of those days were spent in the Jungle at Duplooy's. We chose this vacation because of the positive reviews, the remoteness of the jungle, and the offering of many outdoor activities that we wanted to participate in; such as the trips to the Mayan ruins, Cave Tubing, Horseback Riding, and much more. We booked one of the packages which was great because you had all your meals provided, and you could focus on the fun of being in the jungle!
Food: The food was amazing (thanks John!) We had fresh bread every morning including rolls, scones, toast, coconut rolls, cinnamon rolls, etc (we were there 8 mornings and they never repeated one!) Dinners were a variety of Fish, Pork, Shrimp or Chicken served with rice or potatoes, and fresh veggies. (Always delicious soup or salad and dessert too!) most amazing servers too, they were ALL so sweet and helpful!
When we arrived at the airport we were greeted by Phillip who drove us to Duplooys, including a stop at the Belize zoo, which was amazing! You get to see all of the animals that live in Belize that you may or may not see when you are visiting the jungle or the beach. He had an incredible knowledge of history and filled us in on anything and everything we wanted to know about Belize and his history.
While we were at Duplooys we had the most incredible staff, I was so impressed with how much they knew about the country and how much they truly cared about if you were enjoying your time in Belize.(However, when dealing with the office try to work with Marco or Furman- they are by far the most helpful!) I can't remember an afternoon where I wasn't asked by whoever was at the bar or in the dining room (Albert, Jose, Kevin and Ishmael) if we had a good day, and then sharing their own stories if they had done those activities before. That was probably my favorite part of Duplooys, the fact that all of the staff that works so hard there, really cares about you and becomes like family!
The Activities we did were:
--Cave Tubing: Victor and Leslie were our guides on this one, and they were great! Always a huge sense of humor on the trip, and they were always making sure you had a great time. This is a great trip, just be prepared to carry your tube for about 45 minutes. (no worries, you get great arm muscles) The ride is beautiful, and they really know their Mayan history.
--Horseback riding to Xunahntunich: This trip was amazing, and you are really missing out if you choose not to horseback ride. Guillermo was our guide (he did both our horseback riding trips) and he was great. He is definitely the horse whisperer, and he knows a ton of plants, birds, etc. that he is more than willing to point out to you. (Occasionally he gets too far ahead though) Pro Tip: Avoid Ginger the horse if you can, my mom rode her and she is incredibly temperamental and stops to eat often, almost pulling you over. (We heard this from a couple who rode too)
-- Overnight to Tikal: Victor drove us to the border and did a great job helping us navigate through the border information and waited for us to hook up with our guide on the other side to take us to Tikal. (Christian was our guide, and if you can get him, you will be so happy- he is incredibly knowledgeable, and enjoys his job immensely) Christian took his time going through Tikal and really explained everything. When he realized us and an older couple we were with were really into birds and wildlife, he made sure to point all of that out. He also put up with everyone thousands of questions. We loved him! Highly recommend Tikal.
We chose to do the overnight, but did not find that the information or trip was explained well to us on Duplooys part. That was our only real complaint with our trip to the jungle. Getting back into the park the same day or the next day was not explained, and no one on staff or in the office really seemed to know much about the overnight at all. There was a sunrise walk (which we did finally get into {but through people at Tikal} was not explained to us by Duplooys, but was mentioned a few times from guides) Even with the confusion we had a great time, and would highly recommend both Tikal and the overnight! (Just ask lots of questions and do research about Tikal's overnight in general on your own) The staff really seemed upset by our problem in Tikal, but it was brushed off from higher up, which was disappointing because we had such a positive experience prior to that.
-- Thursday after we returned from Tikal and spent the day enjoy the amenities on property like the botanical gardens and the tubing. Those are great things to have on the property and we had a great afternoon.
-- Friday brought great times at the Women's co-op and Big Rock Falls. We had Noel as our guide, and he was great! So many laughs on that trip. I HIGHLY recommend women's co-op. I got to learn how to make pottery and make corn tortillas including grinding the corn myself by hand. We had a great lunch. Everyone was so nice, and my mom and I went by ourselves so it was just us and Josepha our Mayan guide. Big rock falls was great, but be warned it has faciliTREES as Noel said (meaning you are changing/bathroom in the woods) Didn't bother me as we camp frequently.
-- Saturday we canoed down to the market which was an incredible experience to see all of the food they had to offer. It was a 2 hour canoe ride, but I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful and relaxing morning. We finished off the afternoon at Barton Creek cave. Victor was our guide again, and we had a great time exploring the cave. (The picnic lunches are always great! My favorite was the grilled chicken sandwich topped with lots of grilled veggies)
-- Sunday was our last full day and we spent it with Guillermo. We horseback rode to Flour camp cave, which is a pretty strenuous 3 hour horse back ride, then explored the cave (you will need flashlights and clothes you don't mind getting dirty) This was obviously Guillermo's favorite tour, and he really cared about the Mayan history and pottery there. We had such an enjoyable experience! We canoed back and enjoyed the bar porch for the rest of the evening.

The rooms were great, but yes, be prepared that you are in the middle of the jungle. No AC, No tv's, no real wifi. I was in heaven and I didn't mind at all that I left all my technology at home. It was beautiful and it was not too hot in the rooms at night with the overhead fans and floor fan. Yes, the beds are hard, but I actually got a great and comfortable nights sleep every night. There weren't many insects in the room to speak of, but it was great to hear the cicadas sing you to sleep outside. (much louder then in the US)

Overall we had a great time, and I'm already planning my own independent trip back, hopefully to work with some local schools. Again, the staff that works here is amazing, and they were like our family before the end of our 8 days. I hated saying goodbye!

Room Tip: The jungle lodge rooms overlooking the river are where we stayed and they were great! Just know that...
