“Best Location and Value in San Ignacio”
Reviewed 4 July 2010

Great value for the price and location. It’s cheaper than the resorts on the out skirts of town but still within a ten min walk to town. We stayed in room #18, which is part of the main building. Modern, bright, AC worked. Worth the increased cost compared to the cabana’s, which are rustic, older.

Breakfast was yummy each morning.

We never had issues with the 10 min walk into town. I would always follow the main road and be hyper aware of my surroundings at night; I’d urge anyone else to do the same.

We could hear a baby crying in the room next door, which was annoying at 3am. As someone previously mentioned, we could hear faintly hear music from the karokee bar down the street. But it was very slight over the whirl of our fan and AC. I'm a really light sleeper and my earplugs worked wonders.

I mention these two items so other travelers are aware but don’t let it prevent you from staying here. This hotel is owned by the sweetest, kindest family. We enjoyed talking with them in the kitchen some evenings. We'd definitely stay here again.

Midas is right in the down-town, close to the famous market place. the employees are very welcoming and helpful and the atmosphere is just awesome!
the price is very cheap for the quality of the rooms and the location.
I definitely recommend it for young and dynamic travelers!

My husband and I just returned from Belize. We chose Midas because of the good price and all the excellent reviews on trip advisor. We were greatly dissapointed. We stayed in an air-conditioned cabana which looks somewhat cute from the outside but is dark, dingy and old on the inside. I don't think I've ever stayed in a worse hotel (cosmetically) and I've been all over the world.

The first time I tried to take a shower, the water stayed cold and got worm about 15 minutes later. So if you stay there, make sure you turn the shower on and let it run for 15-20 minutes before you get in. The air conditioner is a window unit which takes 30-60 minutes to cool down the tiny cabana in the sweltering Belize heat. We often left it on so that when we came back drenched in sweat, the room would already be cold. However, cleaning people turned it off every time, making returning to our room even more miserable than walking in the sweltering heat (you can't imagine how bad the heat is until you've been in Belize in the summer time).

The service was less than friendly. The front desk workers were all stand-off-ish and not too pleasant to deal with. My husband and I extremely friendly people and were very dissapointed.

The only good thing about this hotel is that it is in town. This way, we could shop around for different tours and take one with the best price. If you stay on a resort far away from town, you have no choice but to take that resort's usually overpriced tours and taxi rides.

The surprising thing is that there are no nice hotels (by western standards) in the entire town of San Ignacio. All the 3-5 star places are far away from town.

I highly recommend Barton Creek caving. Stalagmites/stalagtites are breathtaking and you barely squeeze under them in the canoe. Also, you can rent a canoe for $10/day in San Ignacio and paddle up Macaw river which is beautiful with the real rainforest on each side.

After taking the local bus from Belize City to San Ignacio, it was such a relief to arrive at Midas. At first we settled into one of the cabanas on the edge of the compound, but we were a little wary of creatures, so Mike offered to move us to a cottage, which we loved! It had a tile floor instead of wood -- more suitable for city girls. :-) Arrange your outings with Mike P. in the office. He has great recommendations, and the tour company Midas uses makes these amazing lunches. I still want the recipe for the banana bread. :-) Also, Midas has a hearty breakfast that we enjoyed every morning. Overall, great place to begin our travels in Belize. Mike also recommended Ragamuffin tours on Caye Caulker, which turned out to be another highlight of the vacation. :-) And much to my surprise, I preferred Cayo (Western Belize) over the Caribbean, and I'm sure Midas had a role in this. :)

The other reviews have said it all. This is THE place to stay in the Cayo district. Just wanted to add my thumbs up to the others. :-)

The only teeny tiny down side is that the computer that they offer for guests to use wasn't working. I didn't really care, but my boyfriend would have liked to check his email. If you take your own computer, though, they have wireless in the breakfast area!

We first checked-in to one of the Eleven Cabanas, and it was only okay. The bathroom door was actually a saloon door. The room was slightly muggy. However after we upgraded for $25USD per night to the King Deluxe, it was heaven! Seriously, the room practically double the size of the cabana, had a roomy bathroom, beautiful big windows....oh, thinking about it is paradise!

Another major plus is that Hode's, a really tasty local restaurant, is walking distance like 3mins. The food is delicious! The actual walk to town is about 10-15mins; make sure to bring a flashlight if you're walking to town.

Midas is slightly out of town but only a ten minute walk from the town so no problem, we always felt safe. I think the town would be quite noisy to stay in and Midas was very quiet although we met another couple that had been kept awake by a large group that were also staying at Midas. We stayed in a King Deluxe room which was fairly new by the looks of it. It was well appointed with a great bathroom, AC, very clean and comfortable. The cabanas that are also available looked ok if you want something a bit more rustic. The main thing with Midas was that the grounds could be so much better. They have obviously done of lot of work on them in the past but they were just not very well maintained.

Service was ok at Midas.

We originally intended to saty in San ignacio for 4 nights but after doing a couple of the day trips (which were fantastic, especially ATM and Caracol) we found it wasnt the sort of place we wanted to stay and hang out at - its functional and a good base but not a town to spend the day mooching in. There was one fantastic place to eat in town that used to be called Hannahs, cant remember the new name.
