“Great view, good location--interesting experience”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

We were a bit hestitant to book Cahal Pech due to a few questionable reviews but loved the idea of a thatched-roof cabana with screened-in hammock porch overlooking the beautiful town of San Ignacio--so we decided to give it a try. Pictures from other TripAdvisor pictures were pretty accurate--views were amazing, pools were refreshing and cool, and cabana rooms were a bit rustic. We checked in to our cabana, and noticed one or two mosquitos in the room, a small spider in the shower, and small pieces of wood/leaves from the thatched roof on the bed and throughout the room--BUT at the same time, we understood that we were in Belize during rainy season in a cabana and expected some of these rugged elements...so we decided to not let it bother us. However, on the 2nd night, while laying in bed, my husband felt something fall on him that he thought was a leaf...and actually turned out to be a lizard that fell through the thatched roof! Although we love the outdoors, we quickly decided it was time to move from the cabanas to the main hotel with indoor rooms. Please don't think this is the hotel's fault...Belize is a tropical climate with many elements of nature that can't be contained!! We just realized the cabanas weren't for us! Main rooms were basic, cleaner, and had an even better view of the town as it is set higher than the cabanas.

As for everything else, the food/drinks were great at the hotel restaurant, and pool was clean and perfect to jump into after a long day of exploring the region. Staff was very understanding and accomodating and helped recommend activities and restaurants in town. The property is situated outside the main town of San Ignacio, so you may want to consider renting a car to get around (we rented car from Belize City and drove to San Ignacio, and then on to Placencia).

Overall, I would recommend Cahal Pech as it is uniquely situated from the other hotels in San Ignacio. However, just be prepared for some of the natural elements that you may encounter!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask if you can check out the cabana versus main hotel rooms to decide which you are more...

My family of 5 stayed here in July 2011. We stayed in one of the Family Cabanas that have a bedroom downstairs and one upstairs. The rooms were basic, but great for the price. We loved the hammock on the screen porch. The air conditioning was good and was important for us for good sleeping. We ate in the restaurant one night and went to town one night and had good food at both. The pool was great with a wonderful view. Overall we just loved the cabanas and would recommend them.

Room Tip: Definitely one of the newer cabanas

I really liked this place. It was beautifully decorated and the staff was amazing. I was paid up in another hotel that I was really unhappy at, sodecided to come back to Cahal Pech because I liked it so much. As soon as I came back, I was happy again. It's a great location because the town is so accessible, but it's far enough away that you don't feel in the middle of the hustle and bustle. I can't say enough good things about the staff, especially Rafael at the front desk. I was in a cabana and loved to sit back and watch the lightening storms over the town.

Room Tip: You can here the noise from the city, but I would recommend the cabana. It has a sceened in porch wi...

We stayed four nights at Cahel Pech. We booked one of the individual cabanas originally, but due to a tropical storm we were asked to stay in the main hotel the first night. We were not impressed with the room inside the main hotel. The walls were very thin - you could hear most everything in your neighbors' rooms.

However, once we moved to the cabana the next morning, we were much happier. We enjoyed the accomodations and especially loved swinging on the hammock in the screen porch. The hotel staff were very friendly, the bartender served delicious drinks, and the food prices at the restaurant were reasonable.

It was a great location to stay while we did three excursions in and around San Ignacio- Tikal, cave tubing, and the ATM cave. We recommend staying at the resort...just make sure to book a cabana.

You know those cabanas in a jungle or tropical setting you see in movies, and you think "oh, I want to be there". Well stay in the cabanas at Cahal Pech and you can experience it first hand! After a day touring San Ignacio, relax in the hammock on the screened in porch of your cabana, with a cold drink from the bar. It. Is. Awesome. Plus, free wi-fi in the lobby! Not a lot of food options for vegetarians for dinner, but breakfast buffet was fantastic.

Room Tip: Go with a cabana, don't stay in the hotel part.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Cahal Pech. The staff was friendly and helpful. The cabana rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfasts and lunch were good, but we went into town for dinners, just to try out other things. The main town was maybe a ten minute walk down hill, I'd get a $5 taxi ride back up the hill though. Cahal Pech ruins were maybe 2 or 3 min. away. This was really a great home base for exploring Belize. Many of the other resorts are pretty far out of town.

I spent the evening with an air condioning unit that went bang, bang bang..... all night. This was after changing from another room with the same A/C problem. If that isn't bad enough. They have a serious palmetto bug and german cockroach problem. If you stay in the cabanas, make sure you ask for one with a new roof. The thatch roof in mine was moldy and had many bugs crawling in it. If you have mold allergies, you will have a hard time if the bugs and poop don't scare you first. It used to be a nice place. I don't know why the don't fix the roofing and A/Cs. There is also gecko poop falling on you all night, but I don't mind geckos and beetles.

Room Tip: try staying somewhere without a thatch roof and with pest control
