My friend and i wanted to visit San Ignacio to do cave tubing and visit the ruins so we decided to stay at Cahal Pech and booked one of the cabanas. They were very well priced and had a great view of the town. We even had our own screened in porch with a hammock. however, if you dont want to have a steep walk up and down to your cabana everyday, i'd recommend staying in the main hotel and not the cabanas as they are located on the side of the hill. The service at the hotel was great. they were very helpful, warm and helped us organize our tour to visit tikal in guatemala. cave tubing was cancelled because of the rain. if anyone is going when its raining, expect for it to be cancelled as the rivers get too high. the restaurant food was delicious, although the service for breakfast was very slow. show up alittle earlier if you have a schedule to keep. don't miss out on having a margarita at the hotel bar, they are delicious with fresh lime juice. the resort is on the top of the hill so walking into town is easy, about 7 minutes, but walking up the hill home is brutal! you can take a taxi for very cheap though about $3 USD. i would recommend staying here as a home base for san ignacio travel.

The resort is located above town (great views of san ignancio). About a 15/20 min walk up a steep road or a 7 belize dollar cab ride.

I stayed in a family suite cabana with my friends for 3 nights. The room had two levels with 2 beds on each level. There was a screened in porch with hamock and a few chairs. The only thing missing was a mini fridge.

There is a poolside bar that is open until 10 and a great spot to meet fellow travellers. The food at the restaurant is decent but you are better to head into town for dinner (more options and cheaper). Free internet is available in the lobby.

There are plenty of lounge chairs to kick back and relax in by the pools after a day of exploring the area.

I stayed at Cahal Pech with two friends in January 2009. The hotel was nice, location was ok, not too much to see or do outside of the hotel. However, there are lots of tours available and the staff is very accomodating in setting everything up for you. Beware that transportation costs are killer from any part of san ignacio as its very inland. Make sure to budget plenty of your money on the car rides and on food. For Belize, I thought I would have been able to spend much less than I did. But, again the hotel was lovely and we were happy with our stay. * great internet service also available.

For the money, you can do better than Cahal Pech. I offer a list of Pro's and Con's in support.

Pros:
-Grounds: Very well kept with local fruit trees, wildlife and a very clean pool complex.
-Location: about a 20-30 minute walk out of town which means you avoid the noise and "grime" of san ignacio while being close enough to get meals, groceries and services.

Cons:
-Location: When it's raining, the walk is long and its up a pretty steep hill which gets slippery since, like almost all of the other ground in the Cayo, it's covered in clay. Taxiing back and forth isnt necessarily expensive but can be a pain.
-Restaurant: It's a hotel restaurant; the food is overpriced and slow and the service fair to poor. I would highly recommend Saddleback Restaurant, about half-way down the hill into town. For about the same price, you can get a great meal (have the fajitas).
-Rooms: I know we are in the jungle and I expect to see wildlife, but the rooms are do little to keep bugs from getting in and no bed nets are provided. The water takes about 5-10 minutes to get hot, and sometimes it never gets hot at all. The toilet constantly malfunctioned (I was able to resuscitate it each time).

Cahal Pech Village Resort in San Ignacio, www.cahalpech.com was our 1st destination as part of a 13 day visit in Belize and Guatemala. My family of 4 (teenage daughter of 13 and 19 year old son) stayed at Cahal Pech for 5 nights and loved every bit of it. We flew into Belize City and rented a car from Crystal Auto Rental and drove the 2 hours to San Ignacio. At Cahal Pech we had a very comfortable 2 bedroom cabana. Everything we ate at the restaurant was good. I especially loved the Mayan pork chops made with a white wine sauce. The entire resort staff was very friendly and helpful. There are many outdoor activities in the area to keep you busy for several days (Mayan ruins, cave tubing, horseback riding, etc) From here we drove the 1.5 hours to Tikal in Guatemala. If you would like to see where else we stayed, check out Tripadvisor (La Casa de Don David Hotel in El Remate, Guatemala and Maxhapan Cabanas on Caye Caulker, Belize.

We stayed at this hotel in October 2008 for a couple of days on our honeymoon and had an excellent time!! The views are absolutely stunning!!! You can see forever. We have the best pictures of the sunset that look just like postcards! The cabanas were also wonderful and we loved the porch with the hammock on our cabana. The food was excellent and very well priced. The entire resort is very clean and just beautiful and so colorful. The staff did book 2 fun day trips for us: 1 to guatemala to visit Tikal(mayan ruin sites) and another for cave tubing. Both were great and so exciting. Everything was very smooth. The staff is very friendly and so helpful. We can't wait to return(we are planning our return visit!!) and will definitely stay there again!!
Thanks for everything!! Brandon and Randi Willis

I stayed at Cahal Pech for 4 nights after Christmas. We had a family suite in the main building. It had two bedrooms, a bathroom and small living room. Having a fridge was good. The rooms were basic. The bedroom my husband and I slept in didn't have a closet or dresser so we had to live out of our suitcases. Housekeeping was rather haphazard. We checked in at 2.30 but it took two requests and about 6 hours to get towels. On the following days we would get sometimes just 2 towels for 4 people, no washclothes and sometimes a bathmat. There are no extras like cups, tissues - bring your own. But the cable TV had more stations than you could ever want. The pool was beautiful but the water was cool. The food in the restaurant was OK but we liked Hanna's restaurant in town, on Burns Ave, better. The staff was friendly and learned our names and remembered our room number. Cynthia, the tour coordinator, was really helpful. Don't miss the Cahal Pech ruins right next door. They are beautiful. Well worth it. Through the hotel, we did the ATM with Carlos, Xunantunich and Barton Creek Cave with Bruce. All were excellent. It was a nice walk into town - good exercise as it is uphill on the way back.
