“Lovely, wildlife filled jungle bungalow in the center of Belize adventure and culture”
Reviewed 17 February 2017 for a stay in December 2016

Avana Villa is very laid back and on absolutely amazing grounds. The penthouse has sunset views over the Guatemalan mountains. At first we weren't sure about staying here - the long road to the house, the dogs, the gated driveway were a little intimidating - but it turned out to be a spectacular few days near Benque and San Ignacio. The grounds are home to so many birds and howler monkeys roam the trees surrounding the estate. The hosts, Martha and Murray, are so knowledgeable about all the local things to see and do and there are so many! Ruins, jungles, gardens, rivers, wildlife all in abundance. The road to the house requires 4 wheel drive and it is maybe 10 minutes to either Benque or San Ignacio by car. The house is truly off grid - solar powered and no air conditioning. With the breezes we did just fine and plenty of power for cooking and hot water for showering. The penthouse is very spacious and suited our needs perfectly. We loved this area and our stay. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Thank you Auryel for such a glowing review! We truly enjoyed having you folks join us here. We had a great time and would love to have you visit again. It was sad to see you leave. For other travelers though, I would mention that we regularly have the local 1990s era Toyota Corolla taxis in here to ferry guests, and our own vehicle is a simple 2wd.

“Amazing Stay, won't ever forget!”
Reviewed 7 March 2016 for a stay in September 2015

We only stayed here for three nights during our ten day Belize trip but this was by far our favorite stay. Martha and Murray were both great hosts and made us feel quite at home. The whole house itself is amazing and the penthouse was a great private little getaway. It was an unforgettable experience to be waken up in the middle of the night by howler monkeys! Also, for anyone with interest in birding, you wouldn't find a better place to watch than the penthouse. Also to the reviewer who said they didn't like the dogs hanging out with them by the pool, what are you crazy!? I loved hanging out by the pool (great pool by the way) with a Belikin in my hand and going for a swim with the dogs.

As for the drive mentioned in other reviews, we rented a car during our Belize trip and had literally zero troubles getting to and fro from the house. It was about a five minute drive down a unpaved road but it is by no means off-roading. Once you get on the main road, it is only a couple minutes drive to town. We were a little scared of driving in the dark to the house, but were used to it by the second night (it's not bad at all). The only thing to be wary of when driving at night are the pedestrians on the main road (no sidewalks in Belize!).

As for any tours you will go on, all the tour companies know where the house is and will pick you up no issue.

We would highly recommend Avana Villa! It is very unique and was by far our favorite lodging of any trip we have ever taken!

P.S Ask Martha and Murray if you can go see the sheep. Seeing the little dog herd them around was a hoot!

“Beautiful but far ”

This place was located in a beautiful location. You'll get the full jungle experience here. However there were a few things that we were aware of when booking, but didn't really work well for us.

The first thing ended up being the distance. We were excited initially about the distance from town, close enough to get a cab but far enough to enjoy the jungle. Unfortunately, it wasn't that simple. This place has no address so finding it with a cab driver who most times had never heard of Avana Villa was frustrating. Through out the week we found dependable cab drivers who were willing to drive the 1.5 miles down the Unpaved road to the house to get us. If you're staying here, get a local phone and a rental car or you'll feel trapped.

Second was the solar power bit. It's off grid which is cool, but it's something we struggled with. You wake up most mornings with no power. However, the owners will kindly pull you aside to remind you that you aren't turning off lights.

The wifi has rules here. No downloading, streaming, face-timing, etc. and it goes out with the power.

Lastly was the dogs. There are 3 outdoor and one indoor dogs. The three outside are a form of security but they warm up to you quickly. We got frustrated with them when relaxing by the pool. If we were in the pool, they were too and always near us. If we were relaxing pool side, they were in our faces. We opted out of pool time most days because of this.

All in all, I'd say this is a clean and nice place to stay, it just wasn't for us.

Hi. We remain off-grid but we installed an auto-start/stop system for the back-up generator so power outages are almost non-existent. We have also replaced the old Hughesnet satellite internet provider with a wireless option which works very very well. Avana Villa has unlimited wifi available in every room.

“Tranquil getaway with gorgeous views”

We stayed in the penthouse for 10 days with our 2 young children. This was our first time booking a vacation rental and the process was seamless. Martha was always quick to reply and helpful when answering my questions so I felt comfortable completing the reservation.

Directions were very easy to find the Avana Villa penthouse, as it's located just a few minutes outside of San Ignacio. You will need a rental car to stay here, and best to get one with good shocks, as the road leading to the property is very bumpy. Once you enter the gates, your tranquil oasis awaits! Martha and Murray were always helpful with answering questions, giving restaurant recommendations and driving directions. Our son loved their dog, Mitsu (sp?) too!

The penthouse is naturally located at the top of the house, meaning that there are 4 sets of stairs to climb. Other families with young children might prefer to stay in their Garden Suite as it's on the ground floor and you won't have to carry children (and their things) up and down the stairs. But we had booked the penthouse because we wanted those gorgeous views, and they certainly did not disappoint! The views are simply amazing at all times of the day and night. The apartment is very spacious and we loved the giant shower room- we had to take family showers just to take advantage!

The rest of the house and grounds, including the swimming pool, are also beautiful and perfect for a relaxing getaway from it all. The jungle is right there and you can hear it all day, but it gets surprisingly quiet at night. We all slept like babies there!

“Amazing stay! Great hosts! Nice and Quiet place to get away from it all”
Reviewed 6 March 2015 for a stay in December 2013

Martha and Murray's property, house and location near San Ignacio was perfect for what my Wife and I were looking for to start the trip off with. It is only a quick drive to get to the nearest store to pick up some beer and supplies for dinner. The view from the Penthouse is amazing. The sunsets were stunning.
It was good to talk with Martha and Murray to find out ideas on where to go locally and get a history of the area and what is currently happening.

“A Penthouse in Paradise - Six out of five stars!”
Reviewed 17 February 2015 for a stay in December 2014

Our stay in Martha and Murray's penthouse apartment at Avana Villa was incredible. My wife, myself and our three children (ages 20,17, and 12) stayed Dec. 27-30, 2014. The villa sits 1-1/2 miles down a private road just 2 miles, or so, west of San Ignacio on a beautiful 20 acre, gated estate. Our hosts had everything ready on our arrival and showed us around the beautiful grounds, filled with fruit trees, a sheep meadow and lush tropical plants. The penthouse apartment was perfect. Its was large with high ceilings (and ceiling fans) and cool stone floors. There was a full kitchen which was prefect for cooking in. French doors led out to a wonderful veranda with incredible views to the north and west into the hills of Guatemala just a few miles away. The sunsets were totally amazing every night we where there. The villa is off the gird and powered by solar, butane gas and a gas powered generator, when needed. You must be respectful of this and turn off lights and fans when not in use, but we had no hardships with this. The hot water for showering is gas fired and plentiful. There is a large library of books, board games and DVD movies and a laptop DVD player for guests to use. Martha and Murray are great hosts. Always willing to show you around the grounds and give advice on places to dine and things to do in the San Ignacio area. Martha even brought a week old lamb up to the villa to meet our kids, which really thrilled them. But i think our favorite thing about Avana Villa was the triangle swimming pool. Nothing was better then returning from a long hot day exploring the nearby Mayan ruins, caves and jungles, then diving into the cool clear waters of the pool. A real treat. I would highly recommend this property. ... On a side note. If you happen to play disc golf the only course in all of Belize is just 3 miles west down the Western Highway. I was so surprised when we drove by it. I had not even given playing disc golf a thought while in Belize, so was very happy to go one afternoon and play a round. Its a great little 9 hole course laid out through the dense jungle and up and down over still buried Mayan ruins. It was an unexpected find. Check it out if you play. They have free discs to use. Say hi to Tino, the owner and pro for me.

“Awesome place for kosher-keeping guests”

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt pampered and cared for. The place is extremely clean, with great views, and fantastic wild life. The owners took a lot of time to show us around, to point out every tree and animal living on their beautiful property. The place has a feel of being in the middle of nowhere, while it's really close to the city.
Renting a car is well worth it, and driving around San Ignacio wasn't hard.
The owners also took care of our religious needs, namely kashrut and shabbat.
If you are looking for an affordable paradise-like place away from a city hustle,we highly recommend it!
