if you want a true hideaway - this is the place. the rooms are small and plain but very clean. what makes this place so wonderful is the people who run it and all the locals who come to visit. we felt right at home and met some really fantastic people.
I hope to visit again there someday - hope to make it soon.

The Lost Reef Resort staff delivers service which is unique due to the limited number of guests. This allows for individual preferences in lodging, meals and activities during your stay. LIsa personally arranges for all off site activities which eliminates the stress for the guests and allows them to truly relax in this very tranquil place. The restaurant and bar are attached to the resort which allows for a menu which features specials which are unique to the preferences of the chef and certainly the sea nearby. The socialization in the restaurant and bar caters to both guests and locals due to the quality of food and drink. The locals are quite friendly and are anxious to include guests in conversations much like the sitcom "cheers". This is of course not a demand if a guest would prefer privacy. It is, however a special touch that creates memories in a very short time. The cabanas are small but clean and well kept. They offer a bedroom and full bath which meets the needs of most guests. If there is a down side of the Lost Reef, its the fact it is not any closer to the US to revisit fast enough. This is place my husband and I will absolutely return to in the future.

After hearing and reading about the good things Placencia and Belize has to offer, we finally made the trip and we stayed at the Lost Reef Resort for one week. Located right on the beaches of the Caribbean, the Lost Reef is secluded enough to make you feel that you may be the only person on the planet. You have a beach front view of the Caribbean the moment you open the door of the cabana. The bar/ restaurant offers a variety of freshly made foods that are cooked to order. The homemade pizza was the icing on the cake for my wife who is a pizza tasting expert. While you enjoy the benefits of seclusion, you will need a ride to hit the excusions or to go into the down of Placencia. This is the only draw back. But this is no problem as the owners Lisa and John set up and arrange all trips to the Mayan ruins, snorkeling, zip linig, or cave tubing. No money has to exchange hands where payment is made when you settle up with the Lost Reef. A guide picks you up at the resort in a van and takes you to the various sites. Our guide Basillio has worked with the Lost Reef for the past five years. He is a great, out going, down to earth guy who accomodates any of your tour wishes or questions about the country. We spent two days with Basillio and there was never a dull or uncomfortable moment. He knows everyone at the excursions which is a plus. There are also taxi's to take you into Placencia. Overall a life changing experience and a great time. If you are on the fence about where to stay or whether to go to Belize, stay at the Lost Reef and John and Lisa will make sure you have a blast!

Staff was very friendly and made us all feel at home. Owners were on site and very hospitable. They certainly made sure we had everything we needed. With the country's limited resources Lost Reef has done an excellent job to accommodate its guests. For beach-front property it is an extremely good value and the wildlife around the resort is amazing. However, if the occasional tree frog in your shower is an issue, maybe Lost Reef isn't for you. But we certainly loved it.

John and Lisa have created a beautiful little hideaway located about 20 minutes outside of Placencia. It is quaint and peaceful. I can't remember the last time that we have vacationed without any worries. The house, the kids, the dogs, work...all disappeared for a week solid!! It was heaven for us! The optimal word in my last sentence is "for us". Lost Reef is not for folks that are looking for a "Sandals" type resort.

With that said, the staff is phenomenal! Maria, Rosa and Ricky are down-to-earth, accommodating and YUM...the food is...YUM! Some local cuisine..some American. Frankly, it depends on the supplies that they have on hand. If the delivery truck comes..fantastic..if not..be flexible and go with it! They will do what they can to make it work for you!

The tours that Lisa arranges are with licensed locals. Our snorkeling trip was with a local fisherman whom makes most of his living diving for conch and lobster along the reefs and spear fishing. Who better to take us snorkeling?! He arranged it so that we avoided the cruise ship crowds. We were out for 6 hours and never saw another boat! It was surreal! We also went tubing through the Mayan caves with another local who was beyond knowledgeable...not to mention his personality! Again, scheduled to avoid the cruise ship crowds. We had the place to ourselves.

All the while..money??..we never had to carry money. Lisa took care of everything. The bill in the end? We were a little scared. Nope. Another surprise! Between the tours, breakfast, lunch, drinks, dinner, drinks and drinks...BEyond reasonable!

Lisa, John, Maria, Rosa and Ricky took care of us like we were family. They took our vacation very seriously. Their priority was to have us relaxed...and they accomplished that ten-fold! I can't wait to go back next year!

The only time we stayed at Lost Reef was years ago before we moved to the area. Since then, we've been back again and again, but as restaurant customers. It's a hideaway, for sure! Lost Reef always gets interesting guests including tourists (the happiest ones rent wheels for their stay) and people working in the area. An evening at the bar/restaurant is certainly going to introduce you to an interesting character or two.

The food is very, very good. Owner Lisa D'Amore and her small kitchen staff cook excellent pizza & stromboli, and while we haven't tried everything, we've never tasted anything that we didn't like. And the rum drinks are cheap and strong!

Good job Lisa and John, keep it up and we'll see you soon!

In booking Lost Reef, we assumed it was in Placencia, however we found it was at least a 40 minute drive from town, half of which is on a dirt road. It costs $30 US each way to Placencia town, and it's the same price as well if you want to go to Maya Beach (20 minutes away). The cab fares on top of our room cost was disheartening and we felt stranded in terms of seeking out other restaurants to eat at. The cabana was decent, the pool a bit neglected (needs to be refilled), and overall the restaurant was served pretty good food. Our host, Lisa was very warm and friendly and arranged our tours for us. We ended up leaving early and found another palce to stay in Placencia town, which was a very nice room right on the sea, for $46-72 US at SeaSpray Cabanas. If we could do it over we would have stayed there for the duration of our stay. The reservation at Lost Reef was nonrefundable so we lost our money but in order to feel like we had choices and the ability to explore Placencia, it was worth it.
