Maya Lodge
Reviewed 1 January 2012

Stayed here for the week before Christmas. Stefano met us at the property which is situated on the Lagoon side of the village. The property is situated in a really good area, and you only have to see that most of the best properties in Speciality Lodgings here are found in Harbour Place. He was really helpful. There is no microwave in the property, which we needed to sterilise our baby's bottles. He went off and came back half hour later with one we could borrow for our stay.
The property is well kitted out, gas cooker and large fridge, good blender, which was great to make fresh juice for our daughter. Also there is a laundry room with a washing machine, which again was great for us. A choice of two dining tables for you, the living area couches are comfortable and the Cable TV offers about 120 channels (obviously you will get this everywhere and also not likely that you will watch much tv anyhow).
The bedrooms offer good cupboard space and each offers a queen size bed. The previous review mentions the hardness of the mattress. This is personal preference of course, my wife found it hard I found it fine.
The upstairs mezzanine floor offers an extra 2 single beds, and leads onto the crows nest which is great for a bit of sun bathing and a couple of beers in the evening. Saying that we liked to spend most of our evening on the large balcony on the first floor. Very relaxing and private too.
This place is $100 a night in high season and $75 in low season. I looked and looked at properties and hotels in Placencia and found that this looked really good value for money. We weren't disappointed and I'm sure you won't be either. Sure you can get places right in the thick of town or right on the beach front, but like i say I don't think you will find better value for money.
Also if you do stay here look out diagonally across the water to the right of the house and you will see a Catamaran owned by Geoff Scot. Hire it for the sunset tour which is great with a few beers or rums. He also does other tours. Just shout over the lagoon to him when you see him. Hope you enjoy your stay.

We've stayed in Placencia several times, but never found a place to stay like Maya Lodge. With its high ceilings and plenty of fans, it was always cool, even if it was hot outside. Beautiful views and very quiet. And of course, if we hadn't ran into Stafano, we would not have rented the place. He knew exactly what we were looking for. Everything is in walking distance; including the south docks (where we got fresh Ahi to cook). A great place to bring a family or just some quiet time for a couple. We finally were able to relax, on our vacation, when we put our anchor at Maya Lodge.

Thanks Stefano!

What a nice way to ease into our two week vacation. The Maya Lodge is a nice large home (very big) with a welcoming tenant downstairs (Nicoletta) and a local manager (Stefano). I really enjoyed this place, except for the queen beds. I was told that it is the best quality type of bed you can get in this area but I have to tell you I would have to wake up and walk around in the middle of the night because they were so hard it made my hips hurt, this place wold be a 5 if it weren't for the beds. The place is beautiful (the wood in the house is enjoyable), quite close to everyting you need to be close to (Side walk, beach access, store, Yoga/meditation center and town). The lagoon side allows you to see the sun sets from upstairs on the deck. My most favorite is how all the big double doors opened up and along with the ceiling fans it stays quite pleasent there.

Some reviews have complained about the water pressure so I would like to tell you my truth. Yes there are some water pressure issues...but guess what....we were told about it, it's a pump thing and if you need it increased just let the tenant downstairs know and besides it was only after 10:00 p.m. at night that would happen and it was sufficient enough to shower off to cool down. It's not a big deal at all....and infact I never found it to be an issue. Also consider where you are at people...its a 3rd world country and things are not always like Disneyland.

As for the person who complained about the blender...there is a blender now and it works great - Thanks!

Loved having the use of the washing machine and fresh hang dried clothes. Please note....it's the tropics and you need to get those clothes hung up ASAP or they sour immediately.

Stefano was most helpful and did what he said he would. The booking was made very easy with the owners....I found Lou to be very easy to talk to and very very helpful.

Great place to experience....try it out and enjoy!

stayed at the maya lodge in august 2011 for the second time, and once again it proved to be an exellent value. we weren't sure where we were going to stay this time when we drove into placencia, but after quick call to stefano (one of the most honest, hard working guys around) we were in. he met us at the house in 3 minutes flat, and got us all set up, luckily it wasn't booked. the maya lodge is perfect for three guys. it's a beautiful place on a canal built with belizean hardwoods and locally crafted furnishings. the fully stocked kitchen was the perfect place to cook a big breakfast every morning to get us started for the day, and performed just as well after hours when the blender, fresh fruit, and caribbean rum hit the bar.

Maya Lodge was a wide open conept with a loft and plenty of room for everything. Large kitchen 2 fully equiped bathrooms, 3 balconies and large seeting area. You could almost have a bowling alley in the middle of it, it was so big and spacious! This place is very close to the village and is pretty quiet except for the occasional barking dog. It's on the lagoon side which is not recommended for swimming so you'd have to walk to the beach which isn't very far either. Stafano was great at letting us know where to go and what to do and he hooked us up with a real estate agent so we could view properties in the area and Nicolette was great making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

I stayed at Maya Lodge for a week with my husband and 20-year-old daughter. We have been to Placencia a couple of times over the years and love it. We managed to visit Belize at the hottest time of the year this time, and it was hot. But, we loved the spaciousness of the house and its location, and it was nice to be able to cool off in the canal right in front of the house. It is in a great location - walking distance to the beach, restaurants and grocery stores. Stefano is super nice and gave us great dining recommendations. I've been home for a week and I'm already homesick for Belize and planning our next trip!
