“Breathtaking and Tranquil”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

My mother and I recevied our trip to Hatchet Caye resort from a family friend and i must say that this trip came at the perfect time. I did not know what to expect since i did not do any research prior to our departure. I only know that it would take 2 plane trips and a boat ride to reach the island. The Resort representative stayed in constant communication with us prior to our trip to ensure that all of our questions were answered and accomodation were taken care of prior to our departure to Belize (the representative booked our trip from Belize City to Placenia).
Once we arrived in Placenia, we were greeted by our driver and taken the Resort's main office to wait for our boat transfer. We were given a brief tour of the town and allowed to walk around prior to our boat departure. The town offered various dining options/shopping and a beautiful view. We grabbed a quick bite at the Rumfish and Vino. Prior to our departure we were advised to make the necessary adjustments to our attire for the boat ride (change into shorts, apply sunscreen etc). The boat ride from Placenia to the island resort was exciting. Our captain, William, reviewed all boat safety procedures before we the trip started which put some of the travelers at ease. After about a ~50 minute boat ride to the island resort (travel time varies according to weather/water conditions), we we were greeted by the island staff with tasty tropical drinks. The island was beautiful (just linke out of a postcard) and very peaceful.
There is a pool right outside of the main dining area for those that do not wish to swim in the ocean. There are plenty of non-motorized water sports available (kayaking, paddle boarding, hoobie craft, snorkeling, fishing and diving). Yanick and Gordon (resort's water activity staff) were available throughout the day and night to assist with the water activities and also provide lessons on how to use the equipement (they wanted every guest to feel comfortable in the water and encouraged guest to experience new things).
During the snorkeling trip, the activity team took extra time to ensure everyone was comfortable in the ocean, ensured gear was functioning properly and that everyone was able to use their equipement. Yanick held a sea turtle for everyone to see!! It was an amazing expereince for all of us. Later during our stay, Yanick also volunteered to take my mom out in a two seater kayak (she was not able to row) so that she could share the experience.
Life on the island is very tranquil. There are hammocks and beach chairs throughout the property. If you are looking for a party/nightlife then you will need to take a trip to the mainland (as i mentioned before, trips can be arranged in advance). During our stay, we noticed a lot of young couples staying on the island.
3 meals are served a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during designated times. The food is excellent. We tried almost everything on the menu during our 6 day stay. If you are looking for a snack outside of the normal dining hours, you have limited options (chips, nuts, candy & fruit) - but the staff will try to accommodate you as much as possible. We thought we would want to snack between meals but we found out it was not necessary. The bar is always open to offer non-alcoholic (fresh fruit juice/smoothies) and alcoholic beverages.
The room was comfortable and was equiped with a televison (for viewing DVDs only), A/C, ceiling fan, desk, couch, and in-room safe. The main office offers DVDs, reading books, games for guest use.

Room Tip: All the cabins have a great view. Our favorite was #8, It was at the back of the island attached to...

Scenic, secluded, luxurious. Beautiful scenery, well-groomed grounds, very spacious rooms, all the water toys you could want. Nice, safe dive shop, good diving. Had fun hunting lion fish (an invasive species) and even saw a hammer head, to my great delight. Good snorkeling around the pier, which is lit at night to attract eagle rays. Bar and restaurant were lovely, and the food was fresh, tasty, plentiful and had enough variety to keep all of our group happy. Staff was cheerful and friendly and always available. The maids could have been a bit more thorough, though, my tub was not cleaned in three days, wet towels put in the tub were not replaced. The duplex cabanas are very well appointed, but unfortunately not very soundproof - you will hear your neighbors on the other side of the wall laugh, talk and watch TV. Also, the long wooden venetian blinds they got on every window (and the room is ALL tall windows!) clank and bang in the constant sea breeze, making them a very poor decorating choice: too noisy to sleep, but needed for privacy, since people walk by close to the floor-lenght windows. But certainly a beautiful, luxurious spot, with hammocks and deck furniture and a shaded platform over the water inviting you to relax.

Many thanks for your review and feedback. We are working to remedy the sound issue between our duplex cananas. This is the first time we have had complaints about the blinds, but it certainly makes sense that they would make noise in the breeze if not raised so we will think on another option for window coverings down the road. I will work with the housekeepers directly regarding the cleanliness of the units which is a must as has been one of our strengths thus far. Thanks again for your candid review.

Just return from our second six night stay and we're already planning to return! Sean, the dive instructor, put me through my paces to earn my Advanced PADI certification and my wife and I completed 7 fantastic dives with him. He is an excellent instructor, very patient and thorough. The dive sites were incredible, with abundant marine life and great visibility.

The other staff at the island are attentive, they have achieved the perfect balance. They make you aware of the available activities but don't push you into doing anything. Its up to you to let them know what you want to do, then they bend over backwards to make it happen. Meals are included in the package and the food is excellent. If you choose to try your hand at fishing the chef will happily prepare you catch for dinner that evening.

My wife and I travel extensively and hadn't visited the same place twice, until we found Hatchet Caye. We love this place and can't wait to return for out third vacation!

Room Tip: Room 7 is great, but there's really no bad room.

We visited Hatchet Caye in 2013 for 12 days to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We loved it so much we returned for another 12 days in May 2014. This island is small, but that's what makes it so charming! We were a little disappointed that some of the restaurant staff had changed, but that just gave us an opportunity to make new friends. Morris,Juan, Andy, and Jose made dining very enjoyable-always granting any request they could. Damiano keeps the the island in tip top shape-so beautiful in May with all the flowers blooming. We brought another couple with us this time and Sean went out of his way to insure the guys had a great diving experience. They particularly enjoyed the lionfish hunting. We also had the exciting experience of seeing whale sharks! The snorkeling is the best I've seen-and so convenient-just hop in off the dock. We snorkeled around the island almost every day day. I had 2 wonderful massages in the crows nest-so relaxing with the breeze blowing through-Thanks Shar! We stayed in cabana 6 this time as well-we like it because it's a little more private. Thank you Dasha and your entire team for making our stay so special again-we hope to return next year! PS my husband says thanks for the expensive upgrade to the dive boat-the extra horsepower makes getting to the island and dive sites that much quicker.

Beautiful LITTLE island. One small restaurant/bar. Management seems to be phoning it in although most of the staff seemed to be doing their best. We experienced the same scheduling issues with the snorkeling and departure that other reviewers mentioned. Our last day on the island consisted of getting on a boat by 7:30 am due to the fact that another party needed to catch a plane. Our frustration was compounded by the fact that our queries as to departure time went unanswered until the end of dinner the night before. Very small above ground pool attached to bar with only three sun chairs.

Thank you Scott for your review and feedback. We are saddened to know that you left unhappy. It is true that our island is very small and perhaps it is not a match for everyone, but we do try to make sure all guests are happy and enjoy their time with us. Upon taking to you to your room personally we spoke about the best days to sign up for snorkeling and that this could be done at the Dive Shop anytime during the day. I wish I had known that the scheduling process was difficult or inconvenient while you were still here so that we could have handled it right away. In references to your comments about 'phoning it in' I am not sure I know the meaning, however I do recall chatting with you several times during your stay directly and at no time did I get the feeling that you were unhappy, apologies if I read that wrong. It is true that our departure time depends on the flight times of the other guests and this is a logistical issue that will always be a bit bumpy and we are constantly trying to figure ways around the fact that our guests are coming/going from many different places all over the world with different flight times. We promise to take your comments into consideration as we continue to grow and learn.

Great resort. Beautiful location and professional staff. Definitely recommend taking a flashlight for the walk to and from cabanas at night so that you don't crush the hermit crabs. Additionally, I wouldn't recommend staying there over four or five days. The menu got a little boring after awhile. Good food, but not a ton of variety, especially if you're there in the off season for lobster.

Our only complaint was that we were there over a holiday weekend. A number of families came to the island from Guatemala on their boats. While the families were very nice, they had a tendency to take over the small island. While they weren't staying on the island they did use all its facilities, including taking over the dock for themselves. We weren't able to check out a kayak or paddle board when we wanted to, even though there were plenty available initially, as these families had taken all of them. Dasha, the manager, did her best to rectify the situation, but as some of the families had rented a cabana there for a night there was little she could do. Also, there are not enough staff on the island to support such an influx of people, meaning that service at meals really suffered.

The island is beautiful and the snorkeling/diving is unbelievable. I highly recommend it. Be prepared for a possibly uncomfortable boat ride out there. Ours was fine, but if you run into bad weather it will likely not be ideal. Also, be proactive with scheduling any dives or trips with the dive shop.

We would definitely go back and would recommend it to others.

Hatchet Caye is really spectacular. It is very small, so it's easy to "get away for an escape." Our cabana was very clean and very comfortable. We were in room #3, which had a slightly blocked view of the ocean, but still plenty to still view. They provide high quality soap and shampoo/conditioner. The snorkeling was fantastic off their dock. The food was excellent but I warn you that the Shrimp Diavola is super spicy.

We have two children (12 and 14) who found plenty of things to do to keep them busy. We were there for 3 nights.

The reason I say "almost perfect" is because the staff could have been friendlier EARLIER in our trip. By the time we left, they had gotten to know us and were super friendly and helpful, but for the first day, I wasn't as impressed with the staff.
