“Staff and setting were outstanding”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

We stayed four nights after being in Blancaneaux and loved both spots! The staff is amazing and the small boutique style setting fits our desire for luxury with being uptight or self-conscious. Food was great and a great restaurant/bar vibe that lent itself to meeting other interesting, sophisticated guests. My partner and I were there with our 6yr old and felt totally comfortable. The staff seem hotel-schooled yet were relaxed, warm and friendly. Would totally stay here again.

While we did not stay at Turtle Inn, we went to Mare Restaurant for dinner. Real Italian food in a beautiful setting. While the seafood pasta and pizza were great, the gazpacho was fabulous. Wow, such fresh taste! And, of course, great wine.

Having arrived from 5 days at the sister resort Blanceneaux we were ready for some R&R, and we certainly got it. we stayed in Villa 7, way off to the left and right on the beach. What a peaceful and gorgeous Villa. The details were spot on, the space enormous, the wife and I in one master, the adult kids shared the other master. the out door showers are off the charts, the sitting areas out back peaceful, and zen. The living room and dining area up front perfect. We had breakfast in the Villa each day and it was heavenly. the Herbal infused tea is worth the splurge. The rooms, the wayntheynare decorated, and the soaps and shampoos at both resorts are world class. on to,the food....bummer. Let's start with breakfast ...The rooms include continental breakfast each morning, which...each and every morning was 3 slices each of yummy papaya, Ok pineapple, bad watermelon, and a tasy banana. the fresh squeezed OJ is great. the basket of breads...ehh! it's enough tomgetnyourvday started, but they need to mix it up and bake better. we supplemented each day with some eggs, bacon, omelletes...OK.
Dinner at mare, the main restaurant on premises was extremely disappointing. It's very mediocre, bland, and hardly a value. What a shame cause it's Cappolas Italian, and it's just not good. The service is lovely, the location and surroundings to die for, but we ate out after the first night and had 3 other meals that were FANTASTIC. We did eat at the Gaugen Grill on the property, they only offernGrilled, Conch, Shrimp, Lobster or fresh whole fish. Each comes with rice and spinach, and a dessert. It was actually very good, cause ya can't screw up a grill, and the all,the items are freshly caught.
It's a bit dark, and buggy, but a good option. the grounds are lovely, and they work all day to keep them that way. The beach is small and nice, there is kelp in the water, so bring water shoes. The water is delicious...but no one goes in much ...not the deep blue you see when you head out to one of the smaller islands or Faye's to snorkel, or anywhere close to a virgin Gorda, or Mexico beach, or Hawaii ...but if you want to chill in a quiet and off the path town, this is the best place to do it. The pool is great though. The staff is fabulous and everyone remembers your name and gives you big hellos. The front desk ladies are a bit cold, but the beach guys and housekeepers are fantastic. Some suggestions for the hotel...YOU NEED A GYM, you should get a new F&B manager, he's got no personality and the food is bad, and a few rafts and floats to float on would be a nice touch. Also, charging 35 dollars to use the paddle surfboards is wrong....at 800 a night? Every night Jason or the other concierge will find you, wherever you are to see what you would like to do the following day, don't feel bad about saying nothing. It's Ok to just hang out. Borrow the bikes, ride to town...it's cute. Make sure to walk the "sidewalk" it's a real sidewalk with local, artisans an both sides that weaves through the side streets... A real, treat and some cool stuff. We did a fishing and snorkel hole day trip with aarthur Vernon Jr. And his brother Leslie. They are the best. We caught tons of big fish, had a fabulous BBQ luck out on a small island about an hour out called Rangoona, then snorkeled the reef...OMG! what a day.
wear had the best two meals at maya Beach Bistro and The Secret Garden. the last piece of advice...if you can splurge and pay the money....the oceanfront cottages Make for such a better experience t starring all day and night at the ocean is the best.

We spent a week in the Chinese Matrimonial Suite; woke up each morning to the beautiful view and sound of waves on the shore as we lay in bed. Absolutely perfect! Had breakfast at the restaurant the first two mornings, then opted for room service breakfast the rest of the week. The hibiscus tea is wonderful, as are the fresh baked pastries. Did not miss AC or TV or cell phones; it was a wonderful way to relax and unwind. Don't miss the lobster night at the seafood restaurant on their beach; the biggest lobster I've ever had; more than 1 person could finish!

We had our wedding ceremony and honeymoon planned at Turtle Inn. The communication between us and Terry Anne from Turtle Inn with regards to the wedding prior to our arrival was great. We wanted a low-key ceremony, with just the two of us and the Turtle Inn staff (Martin, Terry Anne, Jason) made sure it was absolutely amazing. We stayed for 5 nights total, two in the Cabana 17 by the Gaugin Grill and three in the honeymoon cottage 10 on the water. We had our food taken care of and each meal was absolutely amazing - from the breakfast burritos, to fish burgers at lunch to the amazing lobster at dinner. The staff (Gilbert, Mike, Edwin) took great care of us each day in the various restaurants/bars and Jason the concierge made sure we were well taken care of with regards to everything from our wedding to our planned trips.

We did a snorkeling trip and the monkey river tour, both of which are a must. The property provided bikes which you can ride into town (5 min). Placencia is super safe and there are also bars/restaurants there that are reasonably priced and fun.

Most of the people at Turtle Inn during our stay were couples and the atmosphere was very mellow and relaxing, which was exactly what we were looking for. Beware the sand fleas which can be a real pain - I got zero bites, my wife's arms were covered. Be sure you apply bug spray (available for free by Turtle Inn as well as sun block) if you are prone to getting bit.

Even though the rooms have screened windows, they are quite private due to how they are spaced. The property is quiet and clean (even the sea-grass on the beach is swept each day!!) There are kayaks available for you, and floating docks with towels which are nice to chill out on.

This property, people, accomodations truly exceeded all of our expectations. We are already looking forward to our next trip to Turtle Inn (our friend that has suggested the property to us has been back twice as well).

Thanks to all of the staff and Martin the GM.

Room Tip: I would suggest any room further away from the main road, but all of the Cabanas/Villas and the fami...

We began our week in Belize at Blancaneaux and then spent 4 days enjoying the beach and the ocean at Turtle Inn. Many of the same characteristics are present in both resorts: beautiful villas, good restaurants and gracious, warm service. Our villa was 10 steps from the ocean so we had our own stretch of beach most of the time. The resort is very low density so you always feel like you are in a special, private enclave. We loved the spacious villas and the outdoor showers. The setting is beautiful and secluded. A couple of things may bother some people so be prepared for: no air conditioning (we never missed it and loved the sounds of the ocean and the constant breezes); a fairly healthy bug population (you're at the beach and small things fly around) and the grass that floats on the ocean floor along the beach. All of these things are part of the natural experience and didn't mar our experience. Again, the staff naturally cared about the guests and worked hard to ensure a great experience. I would definitely recommend and would go again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: We enjoyed Villa #7 and would request it again.

Make no mistake, this property has many wonderful attributes. The beachfront huts are charming, and reside literally feet from the beach and surf. The pool, bar, and open-air restaurants are also beautifully done.

I do, however, think there are a few factors that keep this property from being "world class," including: 1) The water is full of kelp and less than optimal for swimming; 2) the beach is only walkable for a short distance; 3) the food in the restaurants is generally very good, but not great. With that said, my wife and I were still delighted that we had a chance to experience the resort...but probably will not return.

If you want a great experience in Belize, I would recommend Blancaneaux -- another Copolla property with an entirely different feel and venue.

Luxury and unspoiled beauty on a pristine white-sand beach.Turtle Inn is a true labor of love. Less than a year after Francis and Eleanor Coppola acquired this beachside refuge in 2001, it was swept out to sea by the forces of Hurricane Iris. Turning disaster into triumph, the Coppolas led a two-year reclamation project, creating a magnificent resort that is consistently ranked among the best in Central and South America. This 25-room seafront hideaway combines natural wonders with luxury style. Accommodations are in individual thatched cottages, decorated with handcrafted Balinese furnishings and naturally cooled by the ever-present sea breezes. Just steps beyond your private deck, the white-sand beach dissolves into the clear Caribbean ocean. In addition, the resort has two infinity swimming pools for enjoying the day. ... more   less
