“Wonderful Family Resort”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

Just back from a fun Christmas family vacation with college age kids at Robert's Grove. We reserved a two bedroom/two bath 2nd floor villa room with private porch which was perfect for our two daughters and us (other family members did the same). We ate at the resort every night. I assume because it was fully booked there was only a buffet offered every night for the holiday week (it was actually a good idea as delicious/attractive setting and fast for hungry kids and no waiting when one is exhausted from diving/excursion day trips). We also ate at the Mexican restaurant across the road (part of Robert's Grove) which was very good. All of the resort staff and bar help were excellent . FYI, the management really helped us with arranging our big family group diving and day trips ... thanks Robert's Grove! AND, we loved the steel drum band at the New Year's party!

On my first trip to Belize, I stayed at Singing Sands and upon my return home knew I would book another trip immediately. I soon learned that the owners of Singing Sands purchased Robert's Grove and decided to try their new place instead of Singing Sands. Although under construction and with many upgrades still pending, I had the most amazing time. As a single woman, I already knew I would be safe with Jean Marc and the crew...and that is an understatement. I feel like part of the family and always well taken care of with them. The resort is wonderful, clean and my room was more than I expected. Their website offers the truth. I enjoyed quiet afternoons in the infinity pool, tasteful lunches and dinners at their restaurant and simply the best, and I have experience many, massage the world has to offer. I can not wait to return and see all they have accomplished. You have never met more wonderful people than those that work at Robert's Grove (and Singing Sands). I miss you all, every day! I hope to return as soon as possible.

when we showed up we were already laughing at the cheesyness of the plastic cactus sculptures. there were four of us staying here and we all shared the same opinion that the hotel was very outdated. the food was not very good and if you ate at the hotel it could definitely take awhile to get your food. the hot water was also constantly out in both of our rooms. we spent alot of time over at the coppola hotel at their beach bar because it was a tad more lively. our hotel was full but it was a miracle to see anyone at the restaurant or bar besides at breakfast. we were hoping placencia would at least have more for us to do but that town is extremely boring with nothing to do. my mother was convinced that her Frommers had blatantly lied about the area, calling it the Key West of central america or something similar (this is NOT true and quite laughable). the day excursions we also found overpriced for what they were. i would recommend doing private excursions if you do them so you arent shuffled like cattle for an overpriced snorkle/dive trip. i did dive and it was sub-par at best. i'd say after a major renovation and some new food the hotel would be much better place to stay.

Fantastic location, spacious rooms, very nice responsive front desk team. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to deal with problems.
The rooms which are freshly painted required ongoing maintenance. From skewering noisy doors of restrooms which did not close, to none-working toilets and non-working phones, miss-matched filters to the coffee makers, the room was not up to par with either advertisements, its rating. And the price.
Only limited Wifi connection was available and in selected location.
Excursions were expensive and staff was not knowledgeable.
The food was POOR , including dry cookies and stale fish and dilute unidentified liquid when ordered latte.
The place is a real missed opportunity.

Let me start my review by telling all of you that the people of Placencia and Belize are wonderful folks. They are genuinely polite, friendly and willing to help you out at every turn.
This review is not about the hard working employees who work and support Robert's Grove. This is about the management that appear not to care about what the customer really needs. Let me give you a few examples.

1. In December the customers that arrive at RG have a rude awakening when they find out that the family and particularly their children cannot swim in the swimming pools. Here is the rub, the pools at RG are freezing in December. Even the Canadians that love cold weather were complaining that the pools should have been heated. In all fairness to the owners, they did make the effort to provide a suggestion box for constructive criticism or suggestions. I do not understand why the owners would not invest in at least heating one pool, to ensure that their customers would have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

Because you are so isolated at RG, it would have been nice to be able to swim in the pool till your heart's content. It is sad to say that the ocean water was warmer than the pool. My son, who is 4 years old refused to enter the pool and spent most of his time running back and forth from the pool to the jacuzzi to warm up. All they have to do is invest a few dollars on a solar panel system that would capture the sunlight and warm up the pool for their guests. That was a major issue for my family. I know it may seem petty, but let me tell you, when you are away from home and you want to relax, that is the way to do it. I am only asking what we as Americans expect when we pay top dollar for a resort. To their credit, in the price they included the use of kayaks, catamarans and paddle boats.

2. The second issue is the food. We ate at RG on the first night and the food was mediocre. As a result we went to the Village and enjoyed different restaurants and had a great time. RG also offers their guests a continental breakfast which is the worst we have ever eaten. The choices are the traditional: coffee, tea, bread, jams, bananas, orange juice, watermelon, cantaloupe and some cookies. This breakfast was not fit for a king, but even the lowest standard accommodations in the US beats it by far. I informed RG in their suggestion box that I would rather them not offer a continental breakfast. The tastes are bland, the fruit is old, the orange juice does not taste freshly squeezed, even though I was told that it is made every day. When you think of a resort that charges aver $300 per night on the off season, at the very least a continental breakfast would be a top priority for their guests. They don’t even meet the basic standards of the Days Inn, in Newport Beach, California that charges half the prize and gives you a great continental breakfast.

A few days later they offered a breakfast buffet. My husband and I had a 3 egg omelet and our son had a few pieces of broiled chicken. These items cost us approximately $50 US dollars. Come on!!! That is ridiculous. Also, the food there was not up to the standard of a high class resort. If I wanted American food I would have stayed home in the U.S.. We went to downtown Placencia and ate at Da Tach, JD’s, Maya Beach Hotel Bistro and the best was the Italian Restaurant, La Dolce Vita. Their food was better and even though cheaper, the quality was as advertised.

3. We made a few local calls and by the time we left it cost us over $60 US dollars. Apparently they charge you from 20 to 30 US. cents per minute. That is a hell of a lot of minutes to make a reservation at a restaurant at the village or to call a taxi. Please check your account regularly to make sure there are no discrepancies. I must say, that the staff at the front desk and the resort are friendly, honest and always willing to help the customer.

4. The resort does offer you bicycles to ride around, but they are old and do not accommodate for little children It would have been nice if they provide bicycles that could be driven by the parents and the children could be passengers.

5. There are no activities for little children. Since the pool is too could to swim in, then you better bring lots of games and diversions to keep them occupied.
If you want to stay in a beautiful resort right on the beach, this is your place. RG has the potential to be the best, if they spent more time on the basics (food and services, etc.) and to make sure their prices match what they are offering the customer. In my opinion, based on the above concerns, they have a ways to go to claim that they are the best resort in Placencia.

This was our return visit to Roberts grove and it is just as chilled friendly efficient and welcoming as our previous stay. It stretches along a blissful beach which you take maximum advantage of with water sports equipment beach facilities excellent food and three swimming pools. Our room was simple but well equipped last time , this time one of the newer blocks gave us a large accommodation though the kitchen area highlighted its other role as a condominium.
Free wi fi was welcome and the restaurant'sfood was excellent.
Only detraction is the development of the Marina on the lagoon side which is lines with Fluorescent day glo plastic cactuses. Is this the influence of Caribbean substance ingestion whilst planning?

Room Tip: go for the rooms closer to the sea and the newer blocks are more luxurious

The cuisine was limited. Not much to chose from here. The water off the beach was cloudy & not safe to swim in. If you flew in with SunWing, service was a disaster. You can not count on reliable transfer flights from Roatan. Day excursions are over-priced. No excemptions made for kids. A pricey poor experience. I would recommend this to someone you do not like. By the way, dealing with SunWing was very frustrating.

Room Tip: Another vacation destination.
