“Our little piece of paradise...”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

...We went to Robert's Grove in Placencia, Belize for our Honeymoon and enjoyed every single moment - it was just perfect! From the moment we arrived and were greeted at reception by Jenny who made us feel at home immediately, and a welcome cocktail drink - to the time we sadly packed our bags and headed back to the airport.

It's a long way from the UK - you can't fly directly, so we broke our journey with a couple of nights in Miami on the way over - but the journey is great fun and definately worth it : taking a tiny 6-seater plane from Belize International down the Placencia Peninsula and finally arriving at a little piece of paradise, Robert's Grove. The hotel is situated towards the end of the peninsula, with the beach and the main part of the hotel on one side of the road, and a marina and restaurant on the other. The rooms are beautiful, kept very clean and tidy daily with fresh flowers left in the bathroom and on the table every day, and mini-chocolates with the turn-down service.

The hotel staff are brilliant, very friendly but not over-the-top, always happy to help or to chat, and to recommend local restaurants or places to visit. Edwin is the best hotel barman we have met, fab cocktails and always great service - Jenny was brilliant at reception, always happy to help - and always smiling!

We had 5 nights relaxing at Robert's Grove - eating mainly at the hotel restaurant where the food was excellent, but also sampling the Mexican buffet at the marina, and the restaurant at the Singing Sands (the Sister hotel which is about ten minutes in a taxi, which reception will organise for you). The food is great - continental breakfast was included which we thought we may have to supplement, being fans of the traditional cooked breakfast but we actually had the continental one every day and it was more than enough - a selection of fresh fruit, freshly baked breads and pastries from the hotel's own bakery, yoghurts, fresh coffee and juice - all whilst sitting practically on the beach watching the pelicans dive into the sea for their own breakfast. During the day you can eat at the restaurant or order at the bar - from a full lunch, to tasty snacks and dinner was always really good - great food and excellent service.

There's plenty of sunbathing spots to choose from - from the long stretch of white sand along the front, one of three pools, a hammock under the trees, a palm-covered shady spot on the roof of the hotel to your own balcony or terrace at the front of your room.

We asked the hotel about visiting the Mayan Ruins at Xunantunich and they organised a personal trip for us...We spent a great day with Juan, and although it's quite a long drive from Placencia it's really worth it as you get to see so much of the country on the way, and the ruins
themselves are really impressive too. Juan was a great guide and really looked after us well, laughing as the guides at the ruins got ready for Prince Harry's visit the following day, sweeping up all the leaves! We also made the most of the Spa facilities at the hotel and enjoyed a Couple's Massage - listening to the sea in the background.

The hotel had bikes available which we used to cycle into Placencia Village and explore a little futher along the peninsula, and we sampled some great cocktails in Placencia whilst sheltering from a cloudburst, and then had dinner at Rumfish y Vino which is another popular
recommendation. The food at Rumfish was great but we found the service lacking - there was another large group in which took up the attention of the staff and the manager alike and it was hard to get their attention - we would recommend booking a table if you're going to go as it
gets really busy.

After 5 nights at the hotel we were taken by boat to Ranguana Caye - one of the hotel's two private islands. About 20 miles offshore, this beautiful two-acre island really was our little piece of paradise for 2 nights... We stayed in a rustic wooden cabana, right on the edge of
the water, up on stilts looking out over the ocean. We were really well looked after by Phil who manages the island and did all the cooking (and his gorgeous dog Taz!), and Elodio, one of the hotel waiters who came over especially to be our barman. Both the guys were amazing,
always around if we needed anything but left us to it so it really did feel like our very own island. We were surprised how well equipped this little sandbar in the middle of the ocean actually was, especially when the phone rang at breakfast time! The food was gorgeous, freshly bbq'd meat, salads, fruit, and the biggest fish we'd ever seen - which Phil caught spear-fishing in the afternoon and then served up for dinner that night... food on a dessert island which definately rivalled that at the hotel... beautiful. We also snorkelled at the island - very calm seas made this really easy for me as I'm not very confident in the water, but I wouldn't have missed this for the world.

The weather changed on our last night at the island, so the boat ride home the next day was a little bit bumpy but we were well looked after by our captain Bruce and we made it back to Robert's Grove very wet, but in one piece, to enjoy another couple of nights at the hotel before
coming home... our travel agent had originally planned for us to come straight home from Ranguana but we would recommend at least another night at the hotel first, otherwise it would've been a real rush and possibly spoilt the end of our holiday.

As it was, we spent our remaining days soaking up as much sun as possible and enjoying relaxing at the hotel - the perfect end to a perfect holiday. Thank you so much to all the staff at Robert's Grove for making us feel so welcome - but especially Jenny, Edwin, Elodio, Juan,
Bruce, Phil - and last but not least, Taz! We had the most amazing Honeymoon, and hope to come back another day!

We did not stay at Robert's Grove, but were able to tag along on a tour that offer. We went on the Mayan ruins/cave swimming tour with Juan. The ruins were ok, but Juan was extremely knowledgeable and provided tremendous history and perspective. I was leery of cave swimming, as I really wanted to cave tube, but the swimming was much, much more enjoyable. We were lead to a remote cave in the rain forest. The hike in was not easy, but Juan was helpful and patient. We swam into the cave and had an amazing time. Lots of time in the car to get there and back, but entirely worth it.

We spent five nights at Robert's Grove and had a wonderful time. The room was absolutely gorgeous and the amenities provided were fabulous. For example, there is a coffee pot in the room and the maid quickly picked up that we brewed an extra pot in the afternoon, therefore ensuring that he/she left us an extra package of coffee. Everything they did went above and beyond our expectations.
We had the benefit of meeting (one of?) the owner who is a super guy which helps explain why his staff are so positive, friendly and helpful. Floretta at the front desk is amazing!
The place has everything you could ask for with the additional benefit of being close to "downtown Placencia" (short drive). Kayak's, sailing, three pools, great food, great beach (which they are continously maintaining because of the surf - they do a great job), tours (at the same cost as finding a local in town) and on, and on and on.
I could not recommend this place more if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with no worries and yet still want a ton of things to do.
Robert's Grove willl be somewhere we hope to return to someday.

Room Tip: Room #4 was amazing. Huge room with the most spectacular view of the beach and sunset. No kitchene...

We had a great stay at Roberts Grove. Pauline was so helpful in organising us last minute. It's a little pricey but we didn't have much time to waste so for us it was perfect. We stayed in the last room available which was probably the worst positioned room but it was still so lovely. It viewed to the gardens which is a rustic beach garden. The room was in the carribean style, colourful but really tastefully decorated. The position of the resort is lovely with the main restaurant having some tables practically on the beach looking out to the view. The food was nice. We opted for seafood the two nights we were there.

We had a couples massage with two fantastic therapists. I have had many massages over the years but these girls are very very well trained. We had therapuetic massages which were right on the mark.

We heard that the Roberts Grove dive shop is a 5 star padi dive outfit with a big dive boat and so chose to stay at the resort as it was easier to be closer to the dive shop. We specifically went to Placencia to dive with the whale sharks which come around the full moon apr/may/jun. We went out on day 3 after the full moon in april and saw 3 whale sharks at the end of the 2nd dive. It was surreal. they are so big and graceful. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have dived with them.

All in all we had a great stay at Roberts Grove, great food, nice rooms, lovely staff.

WOW. Placencia is beautiful, and Robert’s Grove is amazing. We had high expectations, and every single one of them was met. We stayed for three days and could have happily stayed for another week!

Our room was incredible – amazing view, beautifully furnished, very comfortable. Tons of windows that we left open all night to hear the Caribbean as we fell asleep and then as we woke up in the morning. I’ve posted pictures of our room and our view. The staff is fantastic – genuinely friendly, helpful, seeming like they really care if you’re having a good time and really want to do whatever they can to help you. I had an issue when we first arrived (not their fault, caused by my own frayed nerves) and I have to admit I was a bit of a “difficult customer” for a couple of hours. They handled it beautifully, and were so nice about it. When I apologized, one of the women at the front desk said “Not at all, it’s your vacation and we want it to be perfect!”

We spent lots of time on the beach and at the pool. The sea kayaks and little catamarans they have for guests to use are in great shape, and the gentleman who helps with them is really nice and didn’t seem to mind that we’re totally beginners. We didn’t borrow bikes because it was too hot to ride into town, but we saw them and they looked nice.

Placencia Village is adorable. We highly recommend Rumfish, owned by a US expat couple who were very friendly, and the food there was excellent. You can sit at the outdoor tables and watch the kids play soccer on the “football pitch” across the way. We also ate at Wendy’s, fabulous quesadillas on homemade tortillas. We thought the food at the resort itself was kind of mediocre, but we went to Habaneros at the Roberts Grove Marina across the street, and the food there was excellent.

Bottom line: We’d come back to Robert’s Grove in a heartbeat, and we’re thankful for the time we got to spend there!

Room Tip: Room 2 is great!

Recently stayed at Roberts Grove and had a great time. The staff were helpful and the Resort was very efficient and in great shape.
Our only REALLY bad experience in Belize was with CRYSTAL AUTO RENTAL who charges us $350. (American) for a broken plastic frame around the license plate. I highly recommend that travelers avoid this establishment!

Just came back from spending 10 days at Roberts Grove, our overall impression of the place was pure paradise. The staff did their job well, very attentive to our needs. A laptop computer was available to use whenever you needed one. The bikes could use some TLC but they are available to use whenever needed and they do have basket to carry you stuff. We used these bikes to explore Placencia every day. The Habbenaro has a really good mexican buffet, the housekeeping staff did an incredible job at keeping our room well supplied and clean. The groundskeeper were always out maintaining the grounds. The dive shop staff did a fabulous job on our many snorkling tours, very knowledgeable about the many fish and coral. And yes, we even saw the whale shark at the surface right next to us! the continetal breakfast provided the basic needs to start the day. If you wanted a beach towel all you needed to do was ask and one would be provided. As for the "weeds" on the beach. That is sargassum which is a free floating algae it that was raked up every morning. the three swimming pools are very clean and well maintained. Atmosphere was easy going, no need to worry about a dress code, unless you wanted to dress up. casual ware is accepted. Our room #10 had an incredible view of the ocean, the pool and sunrise. the AC worked very well, the TV had cable with many american channels. the grounds made the feel as if you were in the jungle and yet the ocean was right there. No bugs to worry about. A quiet atomasphere in the morning, with just the parrots making noise. A quater mile north in the town of Seine Bight is a penisular style grocery store next to night club that has everything you could want. The town of Placencia has many resturants to choose from and the people are very friendly. Rumfish has the best hamburger, Fat Boyz pizza has the best pizza, the Secret Garden has awesome grouper, the Barefoot Bar is really great. Tourism center has free water to refill your water bottle. Ecofriendly. Placencias sidewalk is lined with colorful guest houses and small hotels, many gift shops, vendors and tour guides. We felt safe in our wanderings around the town. The town livens up around 6 p.m. We would return again.

Room Tip: Room #10 has a nice view of both the pool and the ocean.
