My girlfriend and I stayed here for 4 days in July, and it was awesome ...

The staff is friendly, the morning breakfast was great(especially the juices and the banana bread), and our cabana (#36) was awesome ... we were 20 steps from the ocean ... and the massages on our front door step were a bonus ...

Room Tip: #36 ... walk out right to the ocean ... 20 steps away ...

Coming in from the Hummingbird Hyw to Robert's Grove (RG) exemplified the contrast of the mountainous rainforest of San Ignacio to this breezy, ocean resort in Placencia. I would recommend to Belizean travelers to visit the interior first completing your trip at the Caribbean Sea. RG is nice, safe resort with a restaurants, pools, spa, water sports, and dive shop. Although the resort has all of the things we were looking for on our adventure bound honeymoon, only a few things really stood out.

We enjoyed our adventurous and fun ground transfer from Ka'Ana to RG; our driver really pulled out at all the stops customizing our itinerary along the (3) drive; we chose RG's Sand and Stone Package, a good value for an all-inclusive with, transfers, tours and spa services. I was even able to negotiate a better nightly rate when we extended our stay beyond the 7 day minimum.

We were greeted by Melvin with two delicious blended drinks. Florence checked us and immediately told us our King Suite was not available. We'd have to be upgraded to a King Villa which includes a separte dinning area, sitting area, king suite, and my favorite... a porch with table, chairs, loungers and a hammock... thanks RG for the upgrade! We were (20) yards from the sea and (15) yards from the pool. It was a perfect location! I spent many hours on that hammock just chilling out.

Our package included all meals, so we made sure to sample all three restaurants at RG. The main restaurant served continental breakfast and made to order from a menu. However, what made breakfast special was having it served on RG's pier with the gentle breeze and the ocean waves beneath. We met a great friend and RG host, Franz, who was always willing to accommodate our every request. Franz served us cocktails on our patio, lunch at the beach, and breakfast on the pier; he was the definition of a friendly Belizean host. He even recommended an a great itinerary for our visit to Placencia. The other two restaurants Habarnaros (Mexican) was good, but on the harbor side were it was hotter during the day. However, there is a nice snack shop there with pastries and bottled drinks. Sweet Mamas is the authentic Belizean restaurant to get beans in rice with BBQ chicken. The Saturday night buffet was plentiful and with good music and to me worth the expense. The food overall not memorable, however, it how and were we enjoyed it having on the resort. You've got to be creative with your dining to make it a unique experience.

While on the resort, we enjoyed the water sports taking out the Hobie Cat Sailing boats and the ocean kyaks. Clifton was very patient with my wife and I. I was able to go from beginner to novice skill level with his help. Although my wife did not like sailing initially, I believe she tolerated it due to my increased skill level attained on this trip. Thanks to the beach crew to helping us out.

Our trip to Placencia would not have been complete without a snorkeling / diving tour and a trip to see the howler monkeys, both of which delivered! RG shuttled our snorkeling/diving group to Silk Caye, a very small island surrounded by coral reefs. our snorkel guide Eddie took us for (2) separate reef tours. The (1) hour boat ride each way navigated us through the Belizean Barrier reefs, the bright sunny day and crystal waters made for a beautiful conveyance. But swimming with sand sharks and a giant sea tortious made it memorable! RG's dive shop did an excellent job with our snorkeling equipment and our lunches, you really can't go wrong snorkeling in Belize. Although I've heard negative reviews on the RG scuba, I really can't comment first hand, as we did not participate. A few of the divers said it wasn't what they expected.

The Monkey Tour was OK for me, from a RG tour perspective; it was well executed. I am just not a fan to the extreme mosquito swarm we were subjected to upon arrival in the jungle. We were for warned by RG staff to bring repellent and protective clothing. As for the Howlers they were right there, in two troupe above the trees howling at us. Our guide also pointed out other wildlife, iguanas, crocodiles, and many species of birds. Boating through the Belizean coastal mangroves in a speedboat was the highlight of this trip for me.

Overall RG has good to great food (lobster was exceptional), nice spacious rooms, excellent guest services, well run tours, accommodating front desk, and a good spa. The only comment I would make were on the insects, we sometimes found in our room. An occasional roach and lots of tiny ants made there residents there. This to me were minor nuisances, to my wife a much bigger deal.

I would recommend Robert's Grove for the Amenities, Location, Staff, Tours, and Cuisine in that order.

Room Tip: Try for the RG Villa's or Higher floors on the property

First and foremost, this is a review to deliver constructive feedback to help improvement where needed, because otherwise it would be just a praise to a great vacation. We stayed at Robert's Grove for a week during "rainy season", All pre-arrival communication was great, they booked the flights from Belize City to Placencia for us and picked us up from the airstrip. Which brings me to the issue - fly or drive down? If you are a party of 2, financially ok to fly. Next time we go, we would drive (family of 4 is the same price for Maya air or having a car for a week), a nice 3 hr. drive from Belize City on beautiful Hummingbird Hwy down to Placencia and then you have a car to go where ever you want to! Much cheaper than doing guided tours. Then - who ever is worrying about weather - don't. If you travel during this season, you and neither locals can predict exactly what you are going to get. During our stay we got one powerful thunderstorm at night, drizzle the day after, rest was plenty of sunshine. Our one/bedroom villa was in building G - oceanfront. Large and beautiful, awesome balcony with hammock, we were out there every night, even though it was quite windy - so relaxing. The resort has 3 pools, we tried all, loved the one with the wooden deck in the middle the most. The beach is probably most of the time NOT a swimming beach. We are from San Diego, California, so we didn't really care since we have beaches at home, but I thought it is worth mentioning. The free non-motorized water sports equipment is only usable when the water is calm enough. The restaurants: Sweet Mama's isn't any good. Period. It is advertised for Belizean food but in fact the menu is burgers, hot dogs and french fries. Ate a pork chop which was bone, fat and 3 pieces of meat. Tried again a signature Belizean soup / Broth was good, presentation aweful with a iece of chicken with bones just thrown in it. The daily specials (and service) are focused more on the staff rather than the visitors. Habaneros is nice but average Mexican fare. The "included" Continental Breakfast is a disappointment at first, but if you really don't care about food, you will be ok with toast and fruits every day plus you can order from the a la cart menu some eggs and other things, but those aren't great either. Ate lunch there once and had the worse chicken wings ever, sandwiches again nothing special, that's why we didn't even eat dinner there. We rented a golf cart to cruise around the first day and to go to Placencia, several good and decent priced restaurants to chose from - Wendy's and Purple Space Monkey are great places. Free shuttle to their partner hotel Singing Sands - OMG the restaurant - food and staff - is AMAZING, go there at least once! Tours - we had our own ideas and staff didn't want to accommodate those so we rented a car and went to Xunantunich and Cahal Pech on our own, also to the Jaguar preserve for a hike and swim in the waterfall pool. Roads are good (some better that in SoCal, the country is safe and people are lovely and approachable, so why be stuck to pay 190$ per person for a tour close by rather than be adventurous..We also rather booked a snorkeling trip with Splash in Placencia because they were good enough to suggest a trip that is suitable for a 7 year old that we had to accommodate. Long speech short - it is a lovely place and we loved our stay, the locals - so safe and fun to talk to locals at night and being greeted by the Rastamen we didn't really expect in Belize. Suggested improvement - RESTAURANTS! Plus - Adjust tours to family needs. Also- there are supermarkets in Placencia where you can buy wine, beer, rum. Belize is awesome and Robert's Grove contributes a lot to this awesomeness :)

My husband and I used a Groupon ($379.00) to stay for 4 nights towards the end of June 2013. Very nice and spacious room with comfortable king-size bed; fridge didn't work well; A/C was great; beach was not accommodating to snorkeling due to run-off from local rivers (rainy season); overall a very comfortable stay with friendly staff. If we had paid the advertised full-price (non-Groupon rate), not sure we would have been as pleased.

I spent the last 5 nights at Robert's Grove with my two daughters (18 & 20). We looked for weeks for the right place to stay in Belize. After reading what seemed like reviews of every hotel in the country we finally decided on Robert's Grove. It was the right choice. It is very well kept. We stayed on room #16. It had two double beds and a futon. It worked well for us. We were never in the room. The porch was great. Everything is clean and very nice at all times. The air conditioning worked very well. We loved hanging out by all three pools. The Pier is really a great place to just relax. It was like we had to entire resort to our selves at times. I can't say enough about how great it is. The small village of Placencia is just a couple miles south of the resort. It is really nice and safe. We walked around everywhere. The people are really friendly. This is a great spot for a family vacation. We will be back.
We did not go on any of the tours at Robert's. We booked our own but we heard they were great.
If you want to go out island hopping, fishing or snorkeling and have a budget. Try Pirates Point. We went on an island hopping / snorkeling tour with them. It was great. They tailored the whole day to whatever we wanted. They are located right on the Placencia walkway, right before the Tipsy Tuna. If you do tell Shane we said hi.

Stayed in Robert's Grove July 2013- overall a great experience and would recommend it. We stayed 8 nights during the 'rainy season'. While it did rain every day, it did so only during the early morning hours ( 4ish) and we only had 1 day of full rain (sprinkle throughout the day).

Property: Located ~4 miles from Placencia proper and .0.5-1mi from Sine Bight. well maintained and beautifully lit at night in a green motif. The landscaping is gorgeous with many little niches with comfortable outdoor seating. As others have pointed out, the beach does have turtle grass washing ashore, but the staff cleans it several times a day and it didn't really impact the whole experience.

Room: very clean with excellent atmosphere including your own personal hammock chair (must have for the first coffee of the day) with views of the beach. We stayed on the end unit on the ground floor at the northenmost part of the property and heard very little noise from our neighbors (with exception of one night were somebody took their argument outside)

Staff: Attentive and polite. I never had a problem booking a trip, hailing a cab or with slow service (which was noted by some of the reviewers)

Amenities: Plenty of non-motorized water toys to take out, some bikes for loan (bikes not well maintained but working).

Food: This is the one spot were Robert's Grove falters a bit. Daily continental breakfast was passable with fruit, coffee, and some pastries with other ala carte options for purchase. There are restaurants on site, none spectacular by any means. Habenero's is on the lagoon side of the property and was fairly standard Mexican fare without much flavor or ingenuity. Sweet Mama's billed itself as 'Belizian food' and while decent was hardly 'Belizian' - unless hotdogs and french fries are considered local delicacies. The menu list was 4-5 items long with a rotating nightly special.

Tours: Took a tour of the Mayan Ruins, the Monkey River Tour, and a trip to Silk Caye. Would definitely recommend the Caye and the ruins, the monkey river tour was a little bland and packed with mosquitos! Also, there are several independent tour outfitters in Placencia so do your homework- many will pick you up at the hotel and have competitive prices, so don't feel like you're stuck with the resort's offerings.

The main resort restaurant seemed more upscale with better offerings -ceviche was great and their bbq night featured a roasted whole pig and lobster. However, most of the items were a bit pricey and the rest of their dinner specials seemed dull (you don't go to a beach resort to eat linguine alfredo)

Would I return? Depends- if I was going back with a family with small kids I would go back in a heartbeat as Robert's Grove is a safe, clean resort. If it were just the wife and I and we were feeling adventurous, I'd take a flyer on one of the hotels in Placencia itself for at least part of the trip as Robert's Grove can seem detached at times from the village.
