“Beautiful, but...”
Reviewed 11 April 2013

Cabanas, beach and overall resort is lovely, perhaps a little far from placentia (one hour bike ride) but all fine if you plan your excursions and adventures carefully. In fact, the cabanas although could perhaps do with a little upgrade or modernisation, we still wonder why there is a gas cooker but no pots and pans?? Are amazing and right by the beach. With regards to the ill equipped and unmodernised kitchen, the only explanation goes with what many people on here described as the management trying very hard for their guests to eat in the on- site restaurant. However, after taking one breakfast consisting of a slice of banana bread and 4 small pieces of fruit (continental bfast) we very quickly decided to look elsewhere for our meals. Luckily, we found the Maya Beach Hotel, which is truly outstanding and excellent value for money.
We never ate lunch or dinner at the Green Parrot, to the dismay of the manager who after realising that we were probably not spending any additional money lost complete interest in us.
Green Parrot is a great place to stay but we would not come back unless the manager realises that instead of throwing his stinger at guests he scrubs up his customer service skills so guest actually feel welcome and excited about taking up more of their services.

Just want to thank you for staying with us at the Green Parrot and for your taking the time to write a review about your stay. I wish you would have said something to me (I drove you to the resort) about not having any pans in the cabana. Frequently these get moved to the kitchen for cleaning and are not returned. All a guest has to do is ask for any pans or dishes and we are glad to provide them. As far as the continental breakfast that we provide in the room price, it is stand in much of Europe and America that it consists of some bread, fruit and beverage. If you wanted to have a full breakfast, that was also available upon request. I am sorry that you felt you had to eat at the resort. We are always pleased to have guests try other locations, as many come to us from other local resorts to try us out. It is a part of the Maya Beach experience. At least your comments let us know that we need to work on our communications so that guests understand better the local environment. Once again we do appreciate your business and feedback.

We found this jewel on Trip Advisor...and what a GREAT find. Leo (Mr. Everything) was a great host. The beach houses are just wonderful. Restaurant had very good food, and well priced. The staff was friendly and attentive. The location is impossible to beat and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hotel/resort. David (the owner) was very pleasant and made sure we were very well cared for. Easy to get here...United Air Lines to Houston to Belize City...then Maya Island Air to Placencia.

Just wanted to let you know that we appreciate you staying with us at the Green Parrot. Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay. Always pleased to have a member of the United family staying with us. I guess we did not talk enough, I was interested to note you live in Windsor, Colorado. My mother was born there in 1910. We spent a lot of days there on my grandfathers and uncle's farms. Best to you both and we hope to see you back again at the Green Parrot as part of our "Repeat Guest" family.

The Green Parrot Beach Houses in Placencia, Belize was the perfect place for my escape from the harsh realities of a Michigan winter. I was there for a week starting on December 16, 2012. This my destination of choice for the end of the Mayan calendar. My goal was to be at the top of a Mayan pyramid to watch the world end. Locals explained that the whole ballyhoo was merely to entice the tourist and that the Mayan calendar would merely clicked over to a new millennium without a hitch. Even without impending doom facing me it was special to climb to the top of the pyramid 229 feet above the ground with no safety features to prevent someone falling over the edge. I had the decided feeling that Mayan leaders did not live to be very old having to climb up and down the structure to get to the residential portion at the very top. Definitely not the place for sleep walking.
Belize reminded me of Mexico 20 or more years ago. There is evidence of new development, but nothing notable is apparent. All of the “resorts” are small. Generally cabins or a very small hotel style. The Green Parrot reminded me of cabins on the shoes of the Great Lakes in the 1920. Very clean with adequate accommodations but nothing remotely resembling the “all inclusive” palaces I am used to in the Caribbean. The expats looked like they came in the ‘60s and never went home. The Canadians had their own favorite bar in town as did the Americans. Which gave you at least two choices for the “night life” which was more like the “evening life” followed by early bed.
The food at the resort was in the local style. Featuring lots of sea food, chicken, and vegetables generally in a stew. The food was well prepared, very fresh, and seasoned to perfection. There are also places to eat in the local community. There even was a place billed as serving gourmet food. I never got to try it, but other guests of the resort said it was excellent. I am more of a rum and beer kind of guy. Which reminds me that the local beer, Belkin, is excellent. Sitting on the porch of your cabin on the beach looking at the azure water across the white sand could only get better with the addition of a Belkin.
Many things of interest to see and do. I would recommend the trip to the Monkey River. An opportunity to experience the flora and fauna of a true equatorial jungle. The Howler Monkeys live up to their name. The river and the jungle are teeming with wild life and vegetation. Everything from the beauty of exquisite flowers to the less than beautiful crocodiles. The guides were born and raised in a small village at the mouth of the river. They are fluent in 3-5 languages. Their insight on being born and raised in this difficult location is very eye opening. And last but not least the crown jewel of Belize is the reef diving and snorkeling. The barrier reef diving is among the best in the world. On top of that is the local reef diving with an abundance of aquatic life.
The staff of the Green Parrot will set up any type of customized tour or adventure that you would enjoy. They avoid the time, money and aggravation of dealing with large organization tour groups. Speaking of the staff they will accommodate your requests at every turn. All of them take a personal interest in your happiness while at the resort. You can even get involved in the planning of the menu. Although the resort has a computer so you can email, the resort is mostly unplugged. Most U.S. cell phones will not work in Belize. There is no TV at the resort, no phones in the rooms, and no electronics to distract you from the natural beauty surrounding you. I had my Ipod and Ereader and set up a beach chair in the water where I alternated between reading, sleeping and swimming while consuming a Belkin or two. I could not have asked for more…..and plan to return in the near future.

The Green Parrot was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and attentive. If you are looking for something fancy, this is not your place. It is a bit rustic but what more could one want than a clean bed, the beach/ocean out your front door, a friendly staff, and great food. Leo, the manager, booked the three of us on several trips and was always around to answer questions or lend a hand re: the local activities. We made great friends with Theresa. She was a fun addition to our evening drinks and meals. This is a great place to relax and regroup. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Our family has stayed at the Green Parrot 2 years in a row now and we are still stunned by the beauty of the people. Leo, Theresa, Nicole and Cameron have become friends. The resorts excellence is in its staff service to making sure every need is met. Food is fresh, delicious and plentiful. To top it off with your own private cabana on the beach steps from the water. We will be back. Rob, Sheila and Family.

Great for a couples get away. I love Placencia it is a nice place to get away. Take some groceries with you or get them at the store just short walk (block) away. The manager and staff is great. They were so nice. There was no A/C but in January it is not needed. The beach is clean and quiet. I loved the cabanas they have just what you need but not over stocked but if you need anything just ask the staff.

Great place to chill. Beautiful beach, nice people and comfortable lodging. A place for those who are not looking for 600 thread count sheets, air conditioning and boutique toiletries, but want to walk from their porch onto the beach and into the water within 30 seconds. A open air restaurant with average plus food. A very good restaurant about a quarter mile north (Maya Bistro). Save some money and bring your own alcohol for sitting on your deck. Well managed by Leo who will help with anything you need. But we didn't need much. In summary, we can't wait to go back.
