“Heaven in Belize”

We stayed here with our two teenagers for 5 nights at New Years and couldn't have been more happy with our stay. The rooms are comfortable and equipped with everything you need. The location is stellar as it is on the beach and the lapping waves make drifting into a deep slumber quite easy to do. The rooms face East so morning sunrises are a pleasant ritual. The rooms have both fans and AC, which we used several times when the breeze stopped. My wife and I are gourmands and we could not believe how good the food was. John is a very creative chef and was accommodating in cooking up a Barracuda for dinner I caught on a guided fishing trip set up by Ellen.
The hotel is about 10 minutes or so to town so it was handy to have a car. We heard several travelers complain about the high cost of a cab so be prepared to bring some coin for this if you don't have one as it is a fun place to go visit. We had a hard time however prying ourselves away from the cooking here however as the meals were simply awesome.

My husband, 19 year old son, and myself spent a week. Accommodations were absolutely lovely, and owners Ellen and John were excellent hosts. They and their superb staff went above and beyond to make sure we got the most out of our time. They offered excellent assistance with ideas for tours, dining, local customs, and provided free kayaks and bikes for our use. As a bonus, their own restaurant kept us stuffed and happy!

This resort was recommended on the website of Table Rock lodge in San Ignacio, and so we didn't do a lot of searching. We just took the just took their word for it. That was before I knew that the Table Rock folks were first and foremost campers, so anything above an uneven tent site would be just fine for them, and it was for us too.

We had the Toucan room and it really was simple yet charming. The only problems were that there was another room at the same level as ours and at an angle that they could easily see into our room if the blinds weren't all drawn at night. That wouldn't have been too bad except all of the Roman shades were broken and a pain to roll up and down all day or night. I believe, however, that the owners were in the midst of replacing blinds throughout the property and our room was truly slated to be done while were there but were not delivered. They did receive enough to do the restaurant and some other rooms, so I'm sure they will be done by the time readers plan a stay

Also, the cleaning is less than stellar, but we are not too wimpy about this. The linens and beds were impeccable, but corners of the room were quite salty/sandy/corroded. In other words, the cleaning crew is probably doing an 80% job, and the 20% not done resides in the corners. It is also pretty difficult to keep wood floors at the beach looking pristine. Anyway, it didn't bother us too much...probably because we were so relaxed and laid back from the surroundings in general.

The owners, Ellen and John, are quite pleasant and their restaurant and bar seemed to be a magnet for other tourists, locals and other property owners. There was often a friend-laden evening gathering at the bar, filled with interesting conversations and that made the place seem all the more friendly.

The food at the hotel was quite good and you certainly can read all about this from other postings. John has done a good job, but real foodies are not going to be quite as impressed as most diners. Having said that, this foodie was blown away by the shrimp and grits for breakfast and the nut encrusted fish at dinner and the lobster bread pudding appetizer. It is also really cool that these guys have set up their own bakery and bagel making operation, and it brings a real sophistiicated element to this simple operation.

Here are some other really good things: The free kayak rentals and the 45 minute paddle to a great reef worth plenty of snorkel exploring. Also they have a computer that guests can use. It means so much to us for keeping in touch with loved ones on an extended trip. So many similar properties do not offer this and that is a shame! Lastly, the staff is very friendly and fun to talk to about their lives in the surrounding areas of the country.

Travel guides will tell you about the awful road into Placencia. That is changing very quickly as segments are getting fixed and paved. It will be a non-issue within 6 months, but I am certain that this will also mean and explosion of development and charm of the surrounding area will probably disappear, but Maya Beach should remain small scale and comfortable.

I would stay there again and suggest it to other folks.

Just returned from relaxing and enjoyable vacation at the Maya Beach Hotel. We actually stayed in the Dreamsicle villa that the Hotel runs. Rustic, right on the Caribbean; free use of kayak; best restaurant in area. We researched all the places to stay near Placencia itself and were rewarded with personalized service, great food, and friendly owners Ellen and John. No other rental units other than the condos had ac, which was a nice addition. We rented a golf cart for a few trips into town-Maya Beach is about 8 miles north of Placencia. The old terrible road has been paved north from Placencia for about 9 miles and hopefully, by 12/21/2012, it will be paved all the way to the Southern Highway.

The food was amazing at the hotel (for foodies out there, you won't be disappointed). The owners were really interesting laid back people and very accomodating. We went during the time when the place was really slow which we liked. Had dinner at the restaurant, enjoyed talking to the owners, and the quiet evenings. It is right by the water so the view is amazing...sit outside, read and totally relax. We also used their kayak and went out early in the morning and snorkeled right by the hotel. The location is not in the busy part of placencia which was a blessing for us as we do not like touristy busy areas. A perfectly romantic place for a couple (even if you are high maintenance, you won't be disappointed). They were also very helpful in helping us with our diving trips and to ATM cave.

We stayed in the flip-flop palace and loved it. The location is beautiful, though somewhat remote (not really walkable from Placencia). The rooms were beautifully appointed, and the AC was high quality and working! Besides the restaurant onsite, there are 2 or 3 other good options (at least in the off-season) within walking distance, but they would definitely get old after a long stay.

Pool is beautiful, grounds were well kept, staff was kind and helpful, and dock is nice. Free internet is a plus, but it's not blazing fast. Beach is passable, and as good as anything in Maya Beach Area (read- not as nice as Placencia beaches).

Don't miss the happy hour at the onsite restaurant, perhaps the dollar for food exchange I've ever made.

We have stayed at this hotel twice and will definitely be back. The rooms are great, the location incredible and the food at the Bistro by far the best I have had in the Caribbean/Central america. John and Ellen make great hosts and have managed to create a real gem here on the beach. They can organize anything and the staff can make just about any drink you can think off. The only problem is figuring out how to try everything on the Bistro menu before leaving......
