I stayed at the Zeboz at the end of April 2005. It was far more remote than I thought it would be, on an unpaved road a good 45 minute bumpy ride from town. Because of that, you're sort of stuck with what the hotel has to offer. The restaurant is ok, not terribly expensive, but it doesn't offer much in the way of local cuisine. The pool is very nice, and the rooms are clean and comfortable, with great bathrooms, decent water pressure, satellite tv, and plenty of air conditioning. They offer day trips for snorkeling, etc., but they are quite expensive. We went on a private trip to Laughingbird Caye with two guides and another guest. It cost us about $80 each, including equipment and food. There is no gift shop or market nearby, so if you need anything you're at their mercy. I got a terrible sunburn and had to wait a day before someone could go into town to get me something to treat it with. The mini-bar is quite reasonably priced. On Thursdays they offer a buffet with Garifuna performers. The staff is very nice and polite, but a little disorganized.

If you want to gaze out on a sparkling stretch of the Caribbean from your spacious balcony overlooking an unspoiled shoreline, and then when the no-see-ums emerge at dusk, retreat inside to your leather sofa and watch CNN or HBO on your HDTV set as you sip a favorite beverage, Zeboz is the place for you. Managed and owned in part by an Italian couple, Zeboz is one of the more comfortable Placencia resorts, offering rooms with marble bathrooms, quiet air-conditioning and ceiling fans, and spectacular views. Of special note is the stunning, enormous swimming pool.

Zeboz is about equidistant from the top of the peninsula to the bottom, in terms of driving time, so it's better situated than most of the other resorts on Placencia if you want to do a day-trip to Mayan ruins, a butterfly farm or a wildlife preserve in the interior. Its splendid isolation some distance north from Placencia Village offers a nice sense of its own time and place, though it probably functions better for those who have rented their own SUV's and driven to Placencia from Belize City (which affords a look at lush scenery along the Hummingbird Highway) rather than those who fly into the Placencia airstrip and rely on local taxis.

There are two drawbacks: First, Zeboz's kitchen offers mostly ordinary, certainly inconsistent food, which seemingly takes eons to prepare and serve -- though this could be cured by putting a firm hand in charge of the dining room and installing a chef worthy of the resort's ambience. If you stay at Zeboz, stick to salads and pizzas, or book dinner at other resorts further down on the peninsula.

The second drawback is that the proprietors of Zeboz -- which was designed as a condo development but is functioning as a resort until all units are built and sold (which doesn't seem imminent) -- don't seem to have realized yet the scope of what a true resort has to provide. They have the big picture going nicely, but the details are lacking. Example: While the suites are handsome and polished, they lack basics such as front door mats, paper towels, wastepaper baskets and the like. Staying in a Zeboz room is a bit like staying in a stunning apartment that hasn't been properly outfitted and moved into yet -- oops, that's in fact what it is. One other symptom of the Zeboz identity problem is that service, while sincere and faultlessly polite, is a bit detached. Requests or questions usually have to be redirected at the front desk a few times before their meaning sinks in.

But considering the reasonable prices, the lovely vista, and the comfortable quarters, Zeboz is an extremely good value...

(The foregoing is based on a four-night stay at Zeboz Resort in late December 2004.)
