My wife and I just spent ten days at Chabil Mar in Placencia, Belize. This was our second time at Chabil Mar with the first being in the spring of 2009. Although we do a lot of active touring around the world, when it comes to needing a peaceful getaway we've found Chabil Mar to be perfect. The resort is wonderfully situated on a secluded beach yet has excellent views of the village of Placencia across the bay and out to sea. Our room, #12, located on the top floor had a great view of the sea and one of the two pools. Also, a quick stairway walk to the outdoor bar for evening rum drinks! Although we did enjoy many different restaurants throughout the area we did take advantage of the resort's rather unique dining service - - no dining room, per se, but the resort itself is its own dining room where we had breakfast and lunch served wherever we wanted on the property. One night we dined with two other couples at the end of the pier where we were served, by request, a special lobster and snapper feast. The entire staff was very helpful via email before our arrival and welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. When you go to Chabil Mar be sure to sign up with a guy named Wayne for fishing and snorkeling trips. Wayne was great and expert at what he does. Another treat is having a couples massage out at the end of the pier. Two wonderful Thai ladies from Placencia provided terrific massages.

Although we used Chabil Mar as a peaceful getaway you can also use it as a base of operations for touring both the natural sights and the Mayan ruins of Belize. Easy access to tours through the front desk.

We'll certainly return to Chabil Mar.

My husband and I wanted a quiet and relaxing place to spend our 10 year anniversary and we found it. Chabil Mar was lovely. We were there during down season so there were only 8 people staying at the resort...yes 8 people not 8 rooms. Besides being humid as hell and sweating like fools the weather was perfect, no rain for 8 days with the exception of middle of the night on our last night. We had massages under the palapa on the pier which were fabulous. Dinned on lobster and swordfish there as well one evening with some of the other couples staying there'd and pretty much just enjoyed the peace and relaxed as we have a 2 1/2 year old at home so quiet is hard to come by.
The village of Placencia is not portrayed well in the pictures so be prepared. It is a poor village and pretty downtrodden but not unlike many other places we have visit. It is safe, we had no problems but I am still wondering where all the friendly people arer the reviews spoke of. You are lucky to get a hello and the women have a constant look of "pissed off" on their face but I heard that this is because of the conditions and them being shy. The American owned restaurant staff are much friendlier but don't be in a hurry because they are on island time no matter wherer you go. It can take upwards of 20 minutes to get a drink and at the turtle inn,( which has a great beach bar, bartender makes coconut mojitos from and served in a coconut he goes and chops down from a tree ) it took 30-45 minutes to get our check....we were the only ones at the bar and he disappeared for that long. Crazy..both times we were there this happened.
Best place to eat hands down The Secret Garden, ate there 4 out of 8 nights. then the Maya Inn. Chabil mar food....not bade but not a good selection and even the lobster and fish we had did not compared to food elsewhere. They were also a lot more expensive at Chabil then in the village.
The front desk service was great at chabil mar, we love the girls. maid service....we had dishes from breakfast on our patio for 2 days for iguanas to feed upon and when I asked her to please remove them she said sshe would get someone else to. The service guys we're friendly and we did not know if it was because of slow season or not but not too attentive. We would have to get up out of pool and call or go to bar in far back for service which was a pain and it took 30 minutes to get water one day by the pool. Gets frustrating but we still enjoyed ourselves. They are building a new bar out front by pool which will be nice since you smother to death in the back where it is and there is no view of the water. By far chabil mar is the best place to stay in the area. Turtle inn does not even have air conditioning! We would have died. Our place was nice and cool and the bedroom and bed soooo comfortable.
Couple things to note...request doing 2 adventures in one day. It is 3 hour drive each way and you will waste 2 full days going back and forth.
Bring good sun screen and a raft or something to float on in pool.
Bring everything you think you will need because you are Not going to find anything there!
Prepare to relax! Not much else to do, this Was perfect for us. We just wish the service would have been a little more on the ball...we will bring walkie-talkies next time!

Room Tip: Room number 8 is great!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon in Placencia and we absolutely loved Chabil Mar. The resort took care of every detail, from our flights in and out of Placencia to booking our daily tours and getting us where we needed to be, so we didn't have to think of a thing. Everyone is so pleasant to talk with, and due to it being low season it always felt like we had the place to ourselves. We visited other resorts and felt so pleased that we booked Chabil Mar. The location close to the village, A/C in the villas, golf carts and bikes to take out...
Everything is exceptionally clean and well-maintained and we always felt incredibly safe. On one of our tours, we were arriving back later than expected, so Natalee at the front desk called our tour guide to see if they should keep the kitchen open later for us. Needless to say we always felt spoiled and that we were their top priority! We would love to come back to celebrate another milestone!

Room Tip: Do not forget to pack heavy duty bug spray and sun block. Available in Placencia but expensive!

My wife and I stayed here as the last stop on our honeymoon in Belize, having also spent time in San Pedro and San Ignacio. We were quite active for those parts of the trip: snorkeling, hiking, ruins, caving, etc. Having read about how laid back Placencia is we thought it would be a great last stop and it was.

We spent three nights here. When we arrived they were very friendly and the fresh lime juice they gave us was honestly one of the best drinks I've ever had. The pools are great as is the rest of the property. We ordered room service (they have good food but it's room service only, no dining room) and ate on our deck which is better than a dining room anyway. The bar at the hotel is fun too and the bartender kept us happy. Also, the pier is a great place to sit and relax at night.

Placencia in general was very relaxing and we walked into town one night and took a cab another. Everyone at Chabil Mar was very friendly and helpful and gave us good tips on where to go in town.

Overall it was a great stay. We kayaked one day but spent the rest of the time on our deck or on the pier or in the pools. Would stay again.

My wife and I spent a week at Chabil Mar. It was our first time to Belize, and we couldn't have been happier. The property is gorgeous and well maintained. The beach is private, and the staff is second to none. Very attentive to our needs without hovering. The food was fantastic, and we loved being able to dine at multiple locations including one evening on the pier. It was reserved just for us and Danny made sure we had fresh flowers, a bottle of wine and privacy. After dinner, my wife took out her iPhone and played 'our song' and we danced as the sun went down. It was a night we will never forget.
That moment kind of symbolized our week at Chabil Mar.
We used their golf carts and went into Placencia Village every day or night. It is less than 5 minutes away, and an amazing place with great people, fantastic restaurants, and an enviable philosophy of life. We felt very safe the entire time, and loved that English is the national language. Also, since their currency is based on the American dollar - the 2 to 1 conversion was easy to deal with.
Our villa was spacious and private, with a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, cable TV and free wireless internet. So, we were able to stay as connected to the states as we wanted.
Chabil Mar is a unique place. It's luxury without haughtiness. It's exclusive and private, but with a casual vibe. And though we loved all the Belizean people we met - Chabil Mar has hired the cream of the crop. We are telling our friends: if you are going to Belize - you must visit Chabil Mar.
