While working across Belize in April we spent 2 nights at El Gran Mestizo, on the banks of the New River. We had a referral from a hotel worker in Belize City. The drive in was a bit challenging finding the way, which really was well signed. When we arrived we discovered a wonderful, new vacation spot. Registration was at a small restaurant/bar overlooking the river. Several families were there with kids kicking soccer balls in the spacious yard. Small boats traded up and down the river. After getting set with a room the hostess asked if we wanted her to arrange a trip to the nearby Mayan ruins, which unfortunately our work kept us from. Our "room" was a great two-story cabin with kitchen, balcony and porch. Everything was new and the room was full of gorgeous woodwork.
We arrived on Easter Saturday so the restaurant was closed for the day but we were given directions to a nice restaurant in town. Breakfast was provided, but at their in-town hotel, Hotel de la Fuente.
The grounds were well kept, very open and well-endowed with orchids and bromeliads. All sorts of birds were flying around. While I did not have time for real birding, a cursory walk around revealed a lot of species. Hummingbird feeders near the restaurant/bar would be an excellent addition. The owner, Orlando, was very attentive and full of information about the area. I would have loved to have loafed around there for a few days.
I could envision using this as a base for birding, botanizing, fishing and exploring ruins.
