“Lovely rustic living”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

Kate and Ian provide a wonderful welcome. Kate's meals are home cooked with home made bread, local fish and finished off with local chocolates and cacao liqueurs. Ian booked local trips suitable for our interests and age. We snorkelled, visited local Mayan ruins and a cacao farm and saw Toucans with a bird guide. Garifuna Drumming in the hotel one night and even more local drumming at The Lazy Fish on a Friday. Rooms are very clean and charming and the local staff are lovely.

The Location is a bit outside, but the natural surrounding is perfect. The lodge is beautifully landscaped and offers an excellent nature trail to learn more about the local flowers.

The rooms/cottages are spacious and very clean. No A/C - you don't need as at night it
cools off nicely - no TV etc. You can relax completely.

The Service for the guests is excellent. Thanks to Kate and Ian.

We had a warm welcome at Hickatee, first of all Ian & Kate helped us a lot to get our DELTA luggage back to Punta Gorda as soon as possible and they also improved our trip planing a lot. The breakfast is good in particular since they bake their own bred what is a huge plus in Belize. The cottages are beautiful inside and nicly located in the Garden. The trails around in the jungle are great for birding and other wildlife watching.
I liked the Idee having a more environmental friendly lodge and Ian is trying a lot to improve on that concept. We had our own car, however without a car one has to work quite a few meters to reach the lodge, its is not a drawback since one has to reach the jungle first, but one should keep that in mind, in particular if it gets dark.

Kate & Ian Morton & all their staff are sensational. They are welcoming, knowledgeable, & extremely competent. Located on jungle's edge, the charming accommodations are comfortable w/o being pretentious & the grounds themselves are beautifully landscaped w/ tags identifying local flora of many varieties. Local fauna include a resident howler monkey troupe & colorful forest fairies (more prosaically, orchid bees). At least weekly one of the country's top musicians visits to demonstrate Garifuna drumming & singing, often accompanied by Ian. The Mortons have assembled an excellent small library & Kate recommended a couple of books that usefully informed the rest of our trip. Kate is also an excellent cook! All in all, the Mortons' place is terrific--a bit of a bike ride into town but that's a minor downside. We loved it & would be ecstatic if we can manage to return.

Great place in the jungle, with very nice and clean cabins, wonderful gardens, and good breakfasts. Hosts and staff are welcoming and helpful. Very interesting concept of self-reliant, sustainable and environmentally integrated activity. Rain water supplied and solar powered. When I was there, the whole system broke down, so we spent the night without power nor water. That means no toilet flush. Also, the premises are a little far from town, which you can reach via a long unlit road in the forest. Although it is at walking distance, I would not walk there at night.

Hickatee, Owner at Hickatee Cottages, responded to this review, 11 February 2014
As with almost all jungle accommodation in Belize, Hickatee is off-grid. Around 75% of our power is provided by our solar panels and battery system, and we use a generator in the evenings. We are thankful that any power failure is the very rare exception rather than the norm, and have never been without power for more than two hours at any one time (which we understand is significantly less time than those connected to the national grid).

In the event our main generator is out of action, we use our backup generator to provide power in the evening, and to charge batteries for overnight power. On such occasions we ask guests to be conservative with their power, and usually switch from our pressurised water system to a gravity-fed water system overnight to help further conserve power for guests’ use. The gravity-fed system doesn’t allow for overnight showers, but does provide a slow flow of water, sufficient to refill toilet cisterns and allow for hand-washing.

Occasionally explanations get lost in translation (we don’t speak French), and when a slow-flow of water is mistaken for a leaking toilet, it’s entirely understandable to leave with the impression that there was no water, for which we can only apologise again.

We pride ourselves on our reputation for value for money and, in cases where guests have been asked to be especially conservative with power and we fear they have been inconvenienced, we ensure that they are all compensated appropriately -- whether they themselves have noticed any slight inconvenience or not.

Ian and Kate have created beautiful cottages in a well tended bit of jungle outside Punta Gorda. We got co opted into a garifuna drumming event at a local hostelry on arrival, give it a go-great fun. Kate's cooking is excellent, Ian shared his marmite (calling all Brits to bring it/tetley tea bags/branston pickle). Visit PG/Hickatee for a different slice of Belizean Life

Hickatee is absolutely recommandable, very nice place, good food, nice talks, very clean and spacious rooms/Cottages. Ask Ian about the Garifuna Culture. He knows everything. Close to PG but the road is quite rough. For lunch visit Joqueline's Place at the entrance of PG. For a Chance eat at Ashas Kitchen overlooking the sea.
