Belcampo Lodge is the epitome of luxury, and not just for a saltwater fly fishing destination. The deluxe suites bordered on decadence, the food and adult beverages were first-rate, and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
For fishermen, the allure of southern Belize is its abundant numbers of large permit. Belcampo was no exception. A fishing buddy and I had reasonable shots at 20- to 40-pound permit on a daily basis. Unfortunately, despite many looks and tantalizing follows, we had no hook-ups. As is often the case, that's permit fishing. (Tip to anglers: Bring a healthy supply of floating -- yes, floating -- crab patterns.)
For birders, Belcampo also offers a boffo experience. My wife has birded everywhere from the upper reaches of the Amazon to northern Scandinavia and the birding outings she enjoyed at Belcampo were as rewarding as any she has ever experienced.More
