“Great location, solid international class choice”
Reviewed 17 December 2011

Stayed early December for 5 nights, took a Deluxe suite.. roughly $150 per night with taxes.

This is a landmark hotel bang in the centre of the Zona Viva (zone 10) of Guatemala City. Minutes from the airport with free trouble-free shuttle; good quality room; excellent vast pool and separate hot tub pool; extensive breakfast and I think possibly the nicest room service we've ever had anywhere. Very accommodating staff in all areas.

On the minus side, it's always disappointing when hotels charge extra for internet and $12 a day is a lot. Wallpaper was peeling quite a bit in the bathroom.. why even have wallpaper in a bathroom?! Also very very very expensive mini bar.. so we didn't use it.

Thevlobby is beautiful, however the rooms are small, mine had an old television which did not work well. Bathroom is also very small. You need to pay extra for internet which is slow and with a limit. Finally the bed in my room was old, it was like sleeping in a hole...next time in guatemala city i will certainly not stay in the camino real.

We stayed two nights in this hotel, which has the most amazing pool of any hotel we have visited yet, it is truly beautiful. The hotel is very large and it was fun to explore the gift shops and restaurants there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a fabulous view from our room which made the stay extra enjoyable. The bed was heavenly! The food in the Italian restaurant was excellent and very well priced - a good bargain. The food in the other two restaurants was pretty good, but we found the coffee to be rather bitter. Unfortunately, much to our surprise since this was the most luxurious of the hotels we stayed at during our entire visit to Guatemala, we both woke up after our second night there with bug bites!! This was completely unexpected due to the caliber of this hotel but since this is a very large hotel in a very large city that kind of thing may be difficult to control? Without that particular experience we would have rated the hotel much higher.

We stayed here for 5 days on our 20th anniversary. We chose it because of the good reviews on Tripadvisor and I was an SPG member. Even though we arrived earlier than their check-in time, they allowed us to check in. Our first contact there was Estuardo at the front desk. He was very friendly and efficient.
We were a bit apprehensive when we saw armed policemen in the lobby, outside and around the streets. We were reassured that it was not because Guatemala City was dangerous- one of the presidential candidates was staying there at the Westin.
Our first afternoon started on a sour note when we heard loud banging from the the floor above us. We were on the 8th floor. They were renovating and we were not told about it. We asked to be transferred to another room and they told us that there was no vacant room.
We have been awake since the night before because we had avery early morning flights so we were so tired and sleepy. After we asked for the second time, we were told that we would be moved to the 4th floor with 2 small beds. My husband is 6'4" and being on a small bed would be uncomfortable for him. We decided to stay put. We were told that it would only go on until the next day (Friday) afternoon.
Also, prior to coming in, I had requested for an anniversary cake. I received 3 e-mail from a Ms. Rosa Espana reassuring me that the cake (for about $8.00) would be in our room with a a free flower arrangement (roses). There were none. I was told that Ms. Espana had quit her job and did not endorse what she had done. She was one of the lobby ambassadors.
Ms. Andrea Duran made sure that we got the cake but she said it would be hard to get the arrangements on short notice. The cake cost more than $8.00.
We decided to stay out of the room from early morning until early in the evening to escape the contruction noise. It worked out very well.
Things were much better the subsequent days.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. The housekeepers came around twice a day.
The rooms were clean. The bed was comfortable. There was a coffee maker with coffee and tea bags plus sugar and powdered creamer. There was an ironing board and flat iron. They provided us with 2 small bottles of water each day for free. The bathroom was large but it was strange to see that the faucets in the shower were on the opposite wall so we had to walk all the way to the opposite wal to turn the shower on/off. Also, half of the opening had a piece of glass but the water would spray on the floor and if we were not careful, the bathroom floor would be flooded. The paint inside the bathroom door near the hinges was flaking off. Perhaps, that room (858) would be renovated soon.
The hotel had 3 restaurants and the 8th floor served breakfast and snacks in the evening (7 PM-9 PM). It was free for those in the Lounge/Club Rooms. There were 3 computers for guests' use adjacent to the lounge and they could be used without fee.
There were many shops on the first floor(lobby). They even had a Duty-Free store. There was, also, a casino which we did not go to. I used one of the 3 ATM machines. The one near the wall dispensed US dollars. We did not use the pool or the gym which was open 24 hours a day. They had 2 lobby ambassadors, Andrea Duran and Lucia, who are both extremely friendly and efficient. Our evening housekeeper, Eugenia Morales, was great. The staff treated us very well. Teresa and all the front desk people were friendly. I had forgotten two digital polarizers for my camera in the tour van and Teresa made sure that they were returned to me the next day. Cesar who worked at the Lounge in the 9th floor was very good. Prior to checking out, Ms. Maria Cordon told us that we could check out with her on the 9th floor. There was no line!
This hotel was so conveniently located near great restaurants within walking distance (kacao,Casa Chapina, Tacontento,etc.). They had a free airport shuttle that left every half an hour. There was a mall in a few blocks away. We were cautioned not to walk at night but since the restaurants were so near, we did without any problems. Our tours to Antigua and Chichicastenango were arranged by Ms. Andrea Duran, a lobby ambassador at the Concierge Desk. Our driver from Highland Tour, Juan Carlos Garcia, was very nice and and spoke English well. He was ,also, an excellent driver. We stopped in good restaurants along the way. He drove all the way back from Antigua one night to return my camera polarizers. On the days we had no scheduled tours, we hired Polo Garcia, a Westin Camino Real taxi cab driver (cab # 951). Although he spoke limited English, we liked him a lot and had no problems whatsoever. He was a good person and a great driver. We hired him for a total of 3 days. Too bad, the e-mail address he gave us would not work and we did not get his home address to send his pictures we took.
On our last day there, we went up to Pacaya Volcano on a rainy day. Polo did not leave us. He went with us and got wet, too. He introduced us to his friends and everyone treated us as if we knew them well.
We will not hesitate to stay at Westin Camino Real the next time we are in Guatemala City. We felt safe and at home there.
The rates were okay but the 22% tax was shocking.

This was my first time in Guatemala City, and I was traveling solo, so safety was my first concern. However, there was no need to worry here. The hotel is very safe and secure, and the staff were very attentive and helpful.

They gave me a renovated room on the 8th floor which was spacious and comfortable. New flat screen TV, and great wifi reception. I also had access to the club lounge on the 9th floor for breakfast, evening snacks and drinks. My only suggestion would be to replace the desk chair with a proper office chair, for those of us who need to get some work done.

The only minor concern I had is that my room was not very soundproof. There were 2 (locked)connecting doors in the room but unfortunately this meant that I could hear all conversations in the next room. My neighbors were mostly quiet, however, one did have a meeting in his room one afternoon, and I could hear every word, as if I was there. I realize, however that there is not much that the hotel can do about this noise issue, so I don't really fault them.

I also hired a taxi from the hotel to take me to my appointments. The driver was very courteous, friendly and a very safe driver, which was especially important since there are no seat belts in the back seat of the taxis!

All in all, a great stay, and I will return to this hotel should I be in Guatemala again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not have connecting doors (if they even have them) for a bit more quiet.
