My wife and I spent most of the year that being 2011 living at Lake Atitlan in one of the small villages along the lake. As explorers we would travel around the lake and often seek out Hotels as weekend escapes from our work. Hotel Atitlan was one of our weekend escapes.
The hotel is a short taxi ride from Panajachel the main city one arrives coming from Guatemala City or Antigua. The ride from either location takes one through Guatemala and is a ride worth taking. I would suggest a Shuttle from Guatemala City many are waiting when you arrive at the Guatemala City Air Port. If coming from Antigua and you love adventure take a Chicken Bus from the main bus terminal in Antigua.
The web site for Hotel Atitlan is accurate, the views, the gardens, the rooms are all as described on the Hotel web site. Sadly that is where the fun stopped for us.
For travelers first time on the lake this Hotel is outside of Pana as it is called. While being outside of the hub of Pana one finds that this location requires a taxi to get to anything. Just a note for travelers to consider. If all you are going to do is sit by the pool and look at the view and relax this works at Hotel Atitlan.
Back to why the fun ended?
We had booked a room for two nights and when we arrived we decided no this is to far out of Pana and we are only want the room for one night. The reception told us sorry you booked for two nights you have to pay for two nights no matter what. That was the policy. Not a great start considering we were in the low season and no one other then us were at the Hotel.
The room was as the pictures describe. Sorry we did not take any pictures. The gardens and birds very relaxing.
We decided we would eat at the Hotel rather then hike back into Pana. The food and the bar was okay a little on the high side for prices for what we had become accustomed with at other Hotels around the lake.
We get our bill, something strange with that. You will find when you travel in Guatemala that most Bars and Restaurants add the tip onto the bill. Not the case at Hotel Atitlan the server was adamant to pay him in cash for the tip.
We left the next morning and again asked about this policy that we could not cancel our second nights room. The manage was having a shower and we were told we would have to wait half an hour. When the manager appeared she told us that the charge had been placed on our credit card for the two nights and that she could not reverse, sorry.
Overall perhaps we got everyone on a bad day.
