My wife and I spent most of the year that being 2011 living at Lake Atitlan in one of the small villages along the lake. As explorers we would travel around the lake and often seek out Hotels as weekend escapes from our work. Hotel Atitlan was one of our weekend escapes.

The hotel is a short taxi ride from Panajachel the main city one arrives coming from Guatemala City or Antigua. The ride from either location takes one through Guatemala and is a ride worth taking. I would suggest a Shuttle from Guatemala City many are waiting when you arrive at the Guatemala City Air Port. If coming from Antigua and you love adventure take a Chicken Bus from the main bus terminal in Antigua.

The web site for Hotel Atitlan is accurate, the views, the gardens, the rooms are all as described on the Hotel web site. Sadly that is where the fun stopped for us.

For travelers first time on the lake this Hotel is outside of Pana as it is called. While being outside of the hub of Pana one finds that this location requires a taxi to get to anything. Just a note for travelers to consider. If all you are going to do is sit by the pool and look at the view and relax this works at Hotel Atitlan.

Back to why the fun ended?

We had booked a room for two nights and when we arrived we decided no this is to far out of Pana and we are only want the room for one night. The reception told us sorry you booked for two nights you have to pay for two nights no matter what. That was the policy. Not a great start considering we were in the low season and no one other then us were at the Hotel.

The room was as the pictures describe. Sorry we did not take any pictures. The gardens and birds very relaxing.

We decided we would eat at the Hotel rather then hike back into Pana. The food and the bar was okay a little on the high side for prices for what we had become accustomed with at other Hotels around the lake.

We get our bill, something strange with that. You will find when you travel in Guatemala that most Bars and Restaurants add the tip onto the bill. Not the case at Hotel Atitlan the server was adamant to pay him in cash for the tip.

We left the next morning and again asked about this policy that we could not cancel our second nights room. The manage was having a shower and we were told we would have to wait half an hour. When the manager appeared she told us that the charge had been placed on our credit card for the two nights and that she could not reverse, sorry.

Overall perhaps we got everyone on a bad day.

Room Tip: The Hotel faces the lake and has a great view from most rooms. If you like gardens a group of rooms...

Stayed 2 nights as part of our tour in Guatemala. Nice hotel, beautiful garden, excellent view and location at the lake Atitlan. Friendly faces in the restaurant and adequate service. Rooms are fine. Food also.
However:
- while drinks at diner can be booked to the room, not possible to do so in the bar. Barman insists on immediate payment, cash only, no bill or receipt. So be warned! Check prices before ordering drinks.

- second night we noticed shampoo bottles were not replaced and half full used ones were taken away. When checking with front desk we were told they were out of stock. No shampoo. We were given a bar of soap instead. So be warned! If you like to shower with shampoo, make sure to bring your own.

- second night there was a wedding party going on at the pool. Music was so loud we not only heard it but actually felt the vibrations in our room. Calls to reception was to no avail. Party lasted till long after midnight. Seems hotel gives preference to party goers over hotel guests.
Sp be warned! If you value your sleepquality make sure to bring earplugs, sleeping pills, or change hotel.

When possible, arriving to the property by one of the many boat transports is the way to go.We walked thru the terraced gardens with loads of flower blooms and birds of all kinds to check in . This in retrospect was much more impressive than the front door. Our rooms were comfortable and all had balconies over looking the volcanos and Lake Atitlan.Sunset in the infinity jaccuzzi is a must. The colorful patio dining room also has a beautiful view overlooking the pool ,lake and volcanos. Our family enjoyed our time here.

Room Tip: Middle floors were quiet.

This hotel is AMAZING. The views of the volcanos from across the lake are unlike anything I've ever seen. The rooms are very quaint and really give you an authentic feel. There are gardens surrounding the hotel with tropical plants and birds, simply amazing.

The town, Panajachel, is a very quaint town with great shopping (for local handicrafts and jade) and wonderful food (I believe we ate lunch at a restaurant called Sunrise? Amazing food and views). We took a boat tour to a town across the lake, Santiago, which was fantastic!

Hotel Atitlan was perfect, the staff were very friendly and the food in the restaurant was delicious. I definitely recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for lake view rooms with the living areas and fireplace...

We were here on our honeymoon and had a nice junior suite on the 3rd floor facing the lake. The hotel itself was absolutely gorgeous, we loved the infinity hot tub, especially at sunset.

Breakfast each day was delicious and had a nice selection. The one dinner we had on site was absolutely delicious (I had chicken soup and my husband had the chicken crepes).

We liked the location as we felt secluded, but at the same time close enough to Pana to walk if we wanted to.

What we weren't so impressed by were the staff at the front office. They never seemed that interested in helping us, and we spent a lot of time being shuffled back and forth from the front desk to the gift shop.

But overall, we loved the place and would consider staying here again in the future.

Room Tip: Our room on the 3rd floor facing Volcan Toliman was great! We had a beautiful view of the sunrise e...

It's really beautiful, the gardens and the birds, it was a wonderful trip to Lake Atitlan. But the Hotel really knows how to put a damper on everything, when you check out. Also, on the last night, new people checked in and all their smoke (Cigars & cigarettes) came up in our room. There is no A.C., so you have to leave the back door open for air. Of course, they were on their Balcony till 1:00 AM. It was a nightmare! The front desk didn't seem to care, as the new guests checked in with 5 different rooms. Finally, they let us move to another room to sleep ONLY. For three days, no meals or room service, our bill was over 900.00. Jr. Suite.

Room Tip: Unless you choose a Jr. Suite and up, the other rooms are not worth it, they even take half the chan...
