Hotel San Buenaventura de Atitlan
Ranked #12 of 29 Hotels in Panajachel

I stayed at this hotel with a group of friends for a week in January and had a truly wonderful time. To be honest, it's hard not to...the accommodation is lovely in its simplicity, is very clean and the views from the little houses to Lake Atitlan are stunning. The hotel's facilities are simple but again more than good enough. It's on the edge of probably the most beautiful lake in the world (and I've seen a few) and 10 minute walk or a 2 minute tuk-tuk ride to the nearby town of Panajachel, where you can eat superb food at ridiculous prices. The food at the hotel is also very good, but the prices are, as to be expected, rather steeper....much like the road to and from the town. The hotel staff will organise boat trips on the lake for you, and basically anything you ask of them, they will arrange!
I felt very safe at the hotel and in the town, but would advise caution when consider climbing the volcanoes or any other expeditions.
Overall there are only two things I can say something negative about: 1) their laundry service is too pricey; 2) the rugs in the rooms are lethal, but this was easily solved by removing it! In other words, go....it's heavenly!!!

We stayed for 5 days in September, 2007. We arrived via shuttle bus from Antigua amid a tropical downpour. The hotel is quite a ways in from the main road, the last part being only gravel. But even through the rain the scenery was amazing, with lush vegetation and beautiful views of the lake. Even the other traveles in our bus who were going to other hotels in town were impressed. The staff was very helpful in helping to get us and our luggage in out of the rain. The check-in was quick and efficient. We had reserved a 1 bedroom unit through a timeshare (RCI). It had one bedroom on the lower level and a kitchen/living room upstairs, with 2 sofas that could be used as beds. This is a converted coffee plantation, and they keep to the colonial hacienda architecture. The rooms have vaulted ceilings, which along with the walls, are of brick. The floors are tiled. The rooms were clean, except that some of the kitchen utensils/pots were dirty. I'm not sure if this is because most people don't use the kitchen. But they provide soap and sponges so we were able to get them clean. They also provide drinking water.
It wasn't until the next morning that I was able to truly appreciate the hotel setting. We awoke to a sunny day and an unforgettable view of the lake and surrounding volcanos from our upstairs window. You can then walk out towards the lake, the hotel has a small private beach, and you can rent paddle boats, kayaks, etc from the hotel (although we didn't try this). There is also a pool and jacuzzi, which you have to ask to be turned on in advance.
Just sitting on the chairs and looking at the lake in front of you was worth it.
There is a restaurant on site, but I cannot comment on it since we did not eat there.
There is a nature reserve just down the road, with zip lines and walking trailes, where you can see monkeys and waterfalls, and cross small streams. They also have a butterfly reserve, which isn't very large, but it is interesting.
The hotel is about 10 min by car from town (if that). The easiest way we found to get around was by the popular "tuk-tuks". It costs about US $2 each way. Once in Panajachel, the main thing to do is shopping. You can also take tours of the lake, visiting the other small towns dotted around the lake.

I thought this hotel was a little pricey for what we got. We got a two bedroom cabin with a full kitchen for $350 for one night. The grounds were amazing, lake views, lush grass, nice pool. The room however was a little bit rough. The construction style I would say would be "jail like". When we first got into the room, I just about let my 10 month old son crawl around when I spotted a 4 inch long black scorpion on the floor. I figured this was no big deal because hey we are in the jungle, and I disposed of it. I then noticed that around the kitchen window and sliding glass doors there was about a 1/4 inch of airspace from where caulking has deteriorated away over the years. This space was around the whole window and was letting some other little critters come in the room.
With that being said, none of the windows actually opened on the cabin, you could just open little vents, so even though we were here in the cooler season it was too hot to stay inside the room. Even with all the vents open and the sliding glass doors open we couldn't really get cooled down even though it was January.
There were two bedroomss in our cabin, and our friends staying in the other room woke up in the morning with bites covering their bodies. In my room my wife, son and I had no bites.
The breakfast was good, and the staff was friendly even though the guy at the front desk was very persistent about us buying a tour from him, constantly lowering the price every time we saw him even though I told him we wouldn't be doing any lake tours (we had already done that a few years ago).
The good part about this hotel is you can just walk over to the Reserva and do the ziplines and feed the monkeys.
If you want to go to downtown Pana it is about a 35 min walk or you can pay for a tuktuk or taxi.

Pros:
Right on the Lake Atitlan
Very Private
Walk to the Reserva de Atitlan

Cons:
Cabin needed weatherproofing the keep out bugs
Expensive
Rooms need some ventilation for fresh air

We just returned from a great trip to Guatemala. We saw much, pyramids, highlands, lowlands, rural and city dwellers. Our stay at Hotel Buenaventura de Atitlan, Panajachel was perfect. Natalia Rivera and her wonderful staff made our stay so welcoming and enjoyable. The rooms, with balcony, fireplace and views of the Lake Atitlan and of the volcanos were spectacular. The food was true Guatemalan treat and delicious. While there we visited local villages, the lake and nature reserves. We saw the butterfly and tropical fauna, monkeys and coatimundis. We ziplined across the jungle with views of the lake and volcanos. A real memorable experience, thrilling. We plan on returning soon.
