Owner description: The Atitlan Nature Reserve is both a must for visitors of Lake Atitlan and a force in the environmental cause: Atitlan Azul. It is an extraordinary gate to the magnificent Lake Atitlan and its spectacular volcanoes. Its zip lines, butterfly preserve, trails, hanging bridges and lodgings bring you in close contact with nature. On the zip lines you fly above waterfalls, coffee groves, oak stands and the steep cliffs that guard the lake. At the Butterfly Geodome you enjoy the colors and forms of hundreds of butterflies surrounded by flowers and the sounds of water. Humming birds and the murmur of the river accompany you while you have lunch, coffee or a drink, then you continue to explore the diversity and beauty of this natural wonder. At night, the crickets, owls and the sounds of the night will be your company in our lodging. The Reserve supports the work of scientist and students concerned with biodiversity and environmental degradation.
Useful Information: Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities

It is located within 10 min tuktuk from the city. The cost is 9$. It is a small piece of real nature which is very pleasant to walk with 4-5 swing bridges to allow you to have a beautiful view of waterfalls, plants and even spider monkeys. It also has a beautiful butterflies enclosure with so many beautiful butterflies. You can also have other activities which we gave up.

We visited the nature reserve purely for the zip lines and were not disappointed. It was a trek getting up to the top but what an adrenaline rush coming down! Pay the 350Q and do the ultra extreme course else you'll only experience the baby zip lines. It seemed pretty safe and the guides spoke some English.

We only saw one monkey and one coati but the nature reserve was very beautiful with a huge waterfall. It's walking distance from town too.

Nice hike to do with kids as not too long and nice views on the lake. They have canopy too but never tried. Visit the butterfly farm too.

This park is really nice. The trails are marked and easy to follow. There are signs about the animals and plant life in both spanish and english. The suspension bridges gave the hike a sense of adventure. The butterfly dome was very pretty. We didn't get to all the trails due to lack of time. We took a tuk tuk from Panajachel which was about 15Q a person.

Tip: Ask your tuk tuk driver to meet you at a certain time (the whole park should take about 2 hours) and he will come back to pick you up since this is in an area where tuk tuks don't frequent to often.

Admission (65Q, 35Q <12) covers butterfly dome and the 90 minute walk up the canyon, past an observation deck to watch the antics of monkeys in trees above, over safe slightly scary suspension foot bridges over the ravine, to the waterfall. Path well marked. Can read about the fauna and flora both in the trail and in the covered base area where there are bathrooms and maps. Along the walk from Pana to the reserve (15 minutes) one passes within the old coffee and sugar plantation and a 300 year old dwelling. Overall well worth a morning or afternoon break from the various lake or town activities
