“Lovely owners, buggy rooms”
Reviewed 3 December 2012

Villa Lupita makes a nice first impression. It is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Panajachel, They have a nice puppy, and the family who runs the place are sweet as can be. It looks beautiful - lots of bright colours and a small jungle courtyard. It was not until closer inspection of our rooms that our impressions took a turn. Our room was infested with spiders. In the windows, behind the mirror, behind the painting on the wall. We looked at another room to see if we could switch - spiders, and we could see tiny bugs crawling inside of the bed sheets. We checked out another room, which was seemingly bugless, and the owner was very apologetic and accommodating, letting us change rooms. The price was right, but unless you like spiders, like-like spiders, stay somewhere else.

Nothing to write home about, but a nice little family run place. We opted for the private bathroom option on the second floor and got a nicely painted room, a hot shower, and some of the feeling of being off the main drag. Villa Lupita is in the old town area on a back street, so about 5 minutes from the main crossroads of town and 15 minutes from the waterfront. This place earns only an average rating as there are a few too many negatives (noted below) to make it rank higher.

+'s

~ family run, so a nice feeling of staying in someone's home.
~ inexpensive.
~ off the beaten track, which is a nice feeling as you are in the old town area, which has a bit of character.
~ friendly and welcoming owners and a feeling of safety as if you are in a family's home.

-'s

~ smallish and hard beds
~ even though off the beaten track, not a peacefully quiet area and you get woken up quite early by the church bells, which are really close by.
~ you expect benefits from being farther from the main drag such as more spacious surroundings and quiet, but you don't really get them.
~ cigarette and cooking smoke filled our room at times.

Special treat:

There is an avocado tree you can get to from the rooftop viewing area. And a nice perch to feel out the old town from up there, too.

Room Tip: The second floor feels a bit more private, but away from the family's living area is recommended...

Stayed here for 3 long, uncomfortable nights. This place is best for a one night stay situation. Very, very basic rooms with shared bathrooms. They do have free purified water available which was a nice perk. And the staff is really friendly. Otherwise, there were a lot of spiders in our room, it's far from the lake, and it was horribly noisy...especially at 6am when the church bells went off. But hey - it was 8 bucks for both of us! I'd still recommend it if you were trying to save some money and aren't bothered by basic accommodation.
