Hotel Real Santander
Ranked #18 of 29 Hotels in Panajachel

The Hotel Real Santander is by no means a luxury hotel, but it is clean, reasonably priced, and centrally located in Panajachel, Guatemala. There can be some street noise - it's in the very heart of town - and there was no wifi (I use a stick modem with no problem). But it is always clean and it has a nice big balcony for watching the activity on main street. If you're looking for a simple, modestly priced hotel near to the wide variety of restaurants and activities Pana has to offer, it will do the job. II travel to Pana several times a year and always choose this hotel.

This hotel was booked for us by our guide. We stayed 2 nights.

The rooms are above, and there are small shops below as well as the hotel lobby which doubles as a travel agency. There are external stairs, like a motel, to reach the rooms above. It is necessary to climb and drag your luggage up. But once up and in your room it is very nice, and the rooms are a good size. There was a charming casement window to open and get some breeze. The rooms give nice views of the surrounding mountains and morning sunrise.

The hotel is located toward the top end of the "strip" on the main street, Santander. We enjoyed walking up and down the street looking at the vendors' wares. Only a few street hawkers were a little annoying (principally small children selling worry dolls). Most accepted the first " No, gracias" , and went away. There are any number of restaurants nearby on the street, all very acceptable if not memorable. Once hears quite alot of English spoken, as there is a large expatriate community of aging hippies who travelled to this town and never left.

I was a little concerned about the potential problem of noise from the street, as the hotel is right on the "strip". But the shops closed about 10 p.m. and then it was reasonably quiet. I used earplugs anyway, because people walking on the street at night coming out of the bars, tend to talk to one another loudly, and the sound reverberates off the cement walls and the cobblestones.

I've rated this hotel "average" simply because I was expecting "OK" and was quite surprised by the room quality and gracious employees.

As mentioned, the street noise can be a bit loud, however, we enjoy that energy so we requested a room right above Calle Santandar. The rooms were spotless, and the office staff very helpful. Kept our bags for us after checkout while we shopped and played in Pana.

We stayed in a huge corner room on the second floor with a table and chairs on the terrace. At the end of the night, we kicked back and watched Pana shut down. Watched it waking up in the morning as well. Paid Q250 for 2 people during mid-week for the room with two queen beds.

No problems at all with our stay in this hotel. If you're looking for something mid-range in Pana, have no fear when giving this one consideration.

This hotel was amazing and totally unexpected given its surroundings. It can be found about halfway along Calle Santander, the main road in Panachachel above a tour office and some shops. The rooms are huge, immaculately kept and have 2 huge, comfortable double beds. Some might find these minor details, but the T.V. has cable, the toilet paper is folded on the last sheet and the cleaning service will do something incredible with the hand towels should you happen to leave a dollar out for them. Its nothing to you, but it is most appreciated by them!! The shower is huge and always has hot water, which can be relief after a long day hiking up a volcano or a day trip over to one of the other towns. The only negative thing I would say about this hotel is it can be a little noisy at night, but it has nothing to do with the hotel, and more about its locality to the surrounding bars. If you're jetlagged enough or have enough sleeping pills you'll have a brilliant nights sleep. Also, if you're lucky enough to get some good weather and have no plans, the owners are always happy to let you out onto the roof where you can enjoy an incredible view of the lake and volcanos whilst soaking up the rays.
