“The Posada is Paradise Found”
Reviewed 2 August 2014 via mobile

My wife and I along with our friend Matt stayed st the Posada this week. It was simply perfect. From the architecture to the location and the service it was all amazing. The owner, Dave is a host beyond compare and we enjoyed getting to know him immensely. The food is unparalleled in this area and the stone cottages are the nicest accommodations we had in Guatemala. Special Thanks to Juan, our driver, whom Dave had meet us at the airport. He made the drive out as nice as our stay. Congratulations to Dave and his whole team for creating this perfect paradise.

This place is just plain perfect. All I can say is that anyone going to Lake Atitlan should work in as many days here as their budget allows (not that it is really all that expensive). The rooms are great; the grounds amazing. The lake location on the quiet bay is beautiful; access to town is perfect. But I want to just focus on one aspect: the staff.

This place has a world class staff that is a true family. And after three nights, I felt like I was in the family too. The owner, David, obviously goes above and beyond to treat his staff right. He puts his money where his mouth is, and as a result, has a staff that is loyal, dedicated, and truly happy to be at work and to share that happiness with the customers. It was a joy to just sit in the dining room between shifts or in the evening and see the staff eating as a big family out in the common room and not hidden away behind the scenes. I don't speak Spanish, but happy people have universal signs, and they were all so happy to be together in the atmosphere that David created. Huge thank you's too all of the Posada staff for adding so much to our vacation.

The tours were great as well, and all personalized. The only problem was that they took us away from the amazing pool and dock area!

Please don't miss this place on your trip to Lake Atitlan. At the very least, eat at the restaurant and check out the amazing architecture and food. But if you can, stay a night. Or 4. Or 356. You will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: The walk to the lake/dining room can get a little long for disabled travelers. So if you have issues...

We had #9 Aquacatel and loved every minute hanging out in and around this spacious stone, well decorated, bungalow. The only place all trip with coffee service in the room, Ahhh. The small things, and Dave, the proprietor as I know the story, has thought of many small things for your comfort or the view or for ecology. Love the attempt at the solar hot water and also the purified water coming out of the wall above the sink. The hammock out front and the reading lights bilt into the wall. Yes, we were smitten. Plus, the food was good, and as vegetarians, we were still finding yummy things to eat for three meals. Also, they take some time to make the terrific food, but there are a great many interesting, beautiful, and historical items to stroll around and view.Like I said, three times and still wasn't bored! Jonny

Lake Atitlan has much to offer the traveler, and this Posada de Santiago is at the top of the list. The location is perfect, shoreside with a wonderful dock to swim and dive from, free and modern canoes for cruising the lake, and a small but fresh pool. The steam bath and jacuzzi were fixed and working during our stay, and added to the enjoyment of the fresh, cool waters of the pool and lake. We stayed in a wonderful 2 bedroom, one bath casita that was lovely. It was immaculate too. The rooms are well decorated in the Guatemala, Spanish Colonial style. The grounds are incredibly beautiful, full of flowers and tropical plants, and well maintained. The restaurant is especially fun -- not only for the tourists but the foreign transplants come in too. Some tables are long for sharing and meeting people. There is a good vibe in the restaurant, we met and spoke with many people. Wifi works pretty much just in the restaurant so people hang out. Perhaps the best part of the Posada de Santiago is the staff of local Maya people. They are well trained, professional and friendly, especially Rolando, Edgar, and Petroncilla. The cooks are also chatty. We are vegetarians and the kitchen would accommodate our orders. Excellent food for all our meals -- which is lucky as there are not many restaurants in Santiago de Atitlan. The great staff help with tours and hikes -- with Rolando as guide, we had some marvelous outings including hiking the big volcano and traveling towards the coast to a birding refuge. Thank you for making a divine place on the lake.

Room Tip: We chose a higher-end room close to the restaurant and lake. With a 3-year old in tow, it was helpfu...

I did not stay at the Posada on my trip but had lunch there & viewed the properties & rooms & definitely plan to go back. The food was excellent, good service, welcoming, impressive atmosphere. The rooms were decorated very creatively in beautiful Guatemalan style. The grounds are lush and relaxing. Felt like a perfect retreat setting.

We stayed at Posada Santiago for four nights, in the Hacienda, which is the largest of the houses. We had a lot of space - three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large kitchen/dining/living room area. A large porch right outside with two hammocks, and many chairs. The place was immaculate, the grounds were beautiful and very well-tended. We went to the pool every day, the view from the pool is absolutely lovely, overlooking the lake and volcano. The pool was clean and a decent size. We used the rowboats to row on the lake a couple of days, it was nice that they were included in the fee for the room. We ate every meal at the restaurant, which was excellent - large portions, a good selection on the menu, we never got bored with the offerings. The blue corn pancakes are terrific. There wasn't much to do in the town itself but for a relaxing vacation Posada Santiago was perfect.

Room Tip: You have to walk up a hill to get from the restaurant and pool to the rooms. If this is difficult, m...

We have been waiting to write our review for the Posada to make sure we were the 200th reviewer- happy 200!

Come to Posada for the beautifully crafted stone bungalows, the blue corn pancakes (the Mason's breakfast) and for the fantastic care of the staff and owner.

A true Guatemala legend.
