After having spent a stressful week in Antigua (without passports as they were stolen) Rio Dulce and more specifically The Roundhouse was THE perfect location to unwind. As it's name suggests the hotel is a 2 storey, spacious tree house like structure set only metres back from the peaceful river. the wide open spaces afford privacy and most of all relaxation. half a dozen or is it more hammocks pepper the property and Dani and Chris, the owners, are never short of suggestions for activities, are always available for a chat and are very helpful for transport and anything else river/Livingston/Belize related. We went for a 2 hour hike into the jungle with a local guide, you can go kayaking basically anywhere (for 50q for the day), there are hot springs and waterfalls nearby... Everything is decently priced from the accommodation (110 for a private 50 for a dorm) to the meals (20/30 for brekky, same for lunch and 50 for a delicious family style dinner)... if you dont have much to do and don't want to do too much this is a great location.

Room Tip: privates and dorms are basically the same price if you are a couple

I stayed at the Roundhouse for just 3 days and I wish I could have stayed longer. Pretty sure I'll be back in the December time frame for a much longer stay. The owners Chris and Dani are great fun to be around and talk to. They provide a great atmosphere. On top of the owners being awesome the Roundhouse happens to sit on the shore of the Rio Dulce in serious jungle territory. It's beautiful, peaceful, and totally relaxing. Can't wait to get back. Oh and for the price, you can't beat it. I think my favorite part was the family style dinners. Great food, way more than you can eat, and enjoying everyone's good company. Now that I think of it, I shouldn't have left. Until next time you guys. I'll be missin' ya.

Room Tip: I didn't stay in the private rooms but they looked fine. The dorm area is super neat. The whole...

What a great place - you just wish you would not have to leave. A perfect place to relax - hammocks close by the river, excellent food, wonderful tropic surrounding, great people (including owners, staff and long-time-visitors :-) - there is nothing else you need.
In fact, the food is one of the best we had in central america so far !!!
Cayaking in the river is highly recommended, but make sure you spend enough time in the hammocks and swimming in the river.
In fact, I have been missing those hammocks so much during our first day back on the bikes...

Yes, you can settle back and stop looking for a hostal right now!
The Roundhouse is definitely the nicest place to stay around Livingston and Rio Dulce...and for sure in my top 5 of all central america.
The food is absolutely amazing and acually too much for the price you pay, the beds are very comfortable, it's perfect for going out by kayak (only 50Q for a double one which you can use the entire day), the stunning river is just in front and the beautiful jungle right behind the hostal.
If you ask them, Dani & Chris will give you very honest and useful advice, for the time you have left in this part of the world - even if that means you might stay less long at their own place. However, it's ways more likely that you end up staying much longer than you've actually planned... ;-)
At the bar you have quite a great choice, too, just ask Chris for his special beer or if you like he's got really good tequila as well.
Drinking water and internet are both free (please do not take advantage of this), the dorm has six single beds (NO bunkbeds), the whole place is really clean and they have some lovely and usually very quiet dogs (saved from abuse), who will take good care of you and the whole property by night.

A real place with an incomparable atmosphere, which is run by two travellers, who settled down to build up their own safe harbour, to make a living, to create something special and to keep on meeting interesting people.

Thank you for an amazing time and we hope that it doesn't take so long until we can see both of you guys again!

best wishes and good luck till then! :-)

Kaya & Olli

Great, relaxing atmosphere. Surrounded by nature. Dani and Chris were fantastic to chat too and very knowledgeable about all of Central America. Take the kayaks for a paddle to the hot springs (only 50Q for a double)! We stayed in the dorms and it was spacious, clean and cheap!

I only had time for two nights at The Round House or I would happily have stayed weeks. Dani and Chris could not have been more welcoming, fun, and hospitable hosts from our first meeting, and the hotel itself is something not to be missed. Built into the jungle, The Round House feels like part of its natural surroundings, and there is no shortage of activities from it's prime location. We drank cold beers in a hammock under the stars, swam off the dock and laid around in the sun, kayaked just a short distance to hotsprings and caves, and enjoyed the delicious family-style dinners the hotel staff prepared. Plan for a week or more at The Round House!

It starts with a boat trip up the river that will be the highlight of your day - the jungle rising out of the river on both sides, dwarfing the boat, is spectacular and not to be missed. And then you arrive at the Round House. It's a funky space designed to welcome nature and blend with the natural environment. It's a very special place and the owners are warm, helpful and accommodating and can tell you lots of interesting things about the local area. You can lounge in their nicely decorated common areas, swing on the hammocks, borrow their kayaks, or just enjoy the view from the dock. The food is great, there's lots of beer and other alcoholic beverages if you want them and you can comfortably join the group or relax on your own. I should also note that the whole place is clean as a whistle and, while they do have dogs, they are well behaved and don't intrude on the guests space. I didn't find the bugs a problem at all - I had a great nights sleep in one of the well appointed private rooms (the dorms looked very nice too). I'm a little older than the average backpacker but I'd heard this place was not to be missed . . . and I'm glad I went. I felt completely comfortable and welcomed from the start! Oh, and they don't have wifi, so get your e-mails out of the way before you go so you can enjoy the solitude and relax!

Room Tip: The private rooms are a great deal!
