I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. While most hotels offer nice facilities and decent service, this hotel focuses on the experience.
It all began when we stepped off a prop plane in Guanaja and were picked up by boat for the 15 minute ride to the hotel. When we arrived, Cecilia, the hotel manager, and Ivan, the "butler"” were waiting for us at the hotel dock with coconuts and towels soaked in ice water to cool off. They took us up to our villa (Isabella), which they had prepared by turning the A/C on well in advance, leaving drinks in the fridge, and even running the stereo with some ambient music. The villa overlooks the water, had two bedrooms with awesome ocean views, a deck with a dining table, chairs, and a hammock, a complete living room, and a kitchen. For lunch they made something we requested that wasn’t on their regular menu and served it on our villa's deck. For the rest of our stay they always asked if there was something they could get us. Ivan even googled how to make a specific treat my wife wanted and made it for us the next day.
The hotel has three bars, one in front of the private beach, another in the main building next to the restaurant, and one available to locals at the end of the small peninsula. All were well-stocked and comfortable, but the one in front of the beach is especially nice. During our visit there was only one other couple, but it felt like we had the entire hotel to ourselves, with the staff catering to our needs at all times but not intrusive at all.
We did not stay at the villa with the pools but since it was not being used we were able to make use of the pools. The view from the infinity pools is great. We enjoyed strong breezes during our stay, which kept insects at bay. Do take insect repellent though, as we got bitten when we were in the rare outdoor areas that the wind did not reach.
The food ranged from good to delicious. The hotel’s owner and famed architect, Lane Pettigrew, was on site when we were there and he was the nicest, most interesting person. We were impressed by the level of detail he oversees, at one point even discussing our snack options with us.
The hotel offers several activities and the one we took was a picnic on a secluded beach. Make sure to take them up on this, it was probably our favorite part of our vacation. The beach we were taken to was spectacular; crystal clear water over white sand and awesome snorkeling right next to it. Lunch on the beach was very good, complete with fresh watermelon and a cooler full of refreshments. On the way there the boat driver took us by some of the sights around the island.
This trip turned out to be the honeymoon we weren't able to take right after our wedding. It was a great experience and we cannot wait until we go back or visit another of Lane’s properties.
