“Great spot”
Reviewed 15 January 2014 via mobile

A 5 minute walk into West End, Half Moon is a gem! The staff went above and beyond in their laid back, casual way to cater to our every need. The double cabins are a tad rustic with no glass windows and no tv but the sounds of nature abound. Great location to snorkel and stay.

I was in Roatan diving this x-mas season and had the pleasure of spending time in Half Moon Bay Resort. This resort is in West End, but out ranks all the other places, by far. As they say "Location, Location, Location". When you are in Half- Moon you really feel like your "Carribean Dream" has become a reality: the place is beautiful, the people are extremely charming and the food is fabulous (try the Coconut Fish Fillet). DIVING: there are 15 dive shops in Roatan, most of them do not have direct access to the water nor are they run by the owners. Half-Moon has a fully equiped NEW dive shop with BRAND NEW equipment, owned and run by Hondurans with years of experience. It also has its own dock, and the dive sites are just 10-15 min away.

Room Tip: Some rooms have OCEAN VIEW which I fully recommend, for example, Room No.4

My husband and I stayed in 12/13 for 10 days and I am sure we chose the best place to stay in the island, specially for what you pay. Great location, oceanview rooms, clean, access to the water in a wonderful snorkeling spot..and the very best, the service! Extremely friendly and helpful owners in front of the business. Ask for Matilde and Rene, they will help you with anything you need or want. The restaurant is also very good, free coffee, great omelets for breakfast, sea food options. Now they also have a scuba diving shop in the hotel, we had a very good experience with these people, very professional, new equipment, very friendly too. Ask for Balto.
Keep in mind this is rustic, small hotel, you won't get the all inclusive/cruise/noisy feel of other locations or hotels in the island, which was exactly what we wanted and love about Half Moon Bay Resort

We stayed in 11/13. We have been coming here for years and I always dread that it is going to change. rainydayghost has a great review on this site that is hard to add to. I did see one post that said a gratuity was added to their stay and would like to say that this has never happened to me or my friends. We generally pay cash and tip along the way, so this may be the reason. The owners can hook you up with a good driver at a reasonable price if you want to see the island. We have also rented cars but the driver is cheaper and you can have drinks along the way. Alex was our favorite on the last trip.
As an aside, Many people do not change money in Roatan as they say using dollars is easier. My expierence is you save 10-15% changing money which is worth it if you are staying for a few days.

Room Tip: Some rooms have newer AC and a small fridge so ask for one of these. They are the same price.

The location is great - we saw an eagle ray in the bay and it was really nice to sit out and have drinks on the deck. The cabin we were in was totally okay for us, but I can see how it would not be okay for others. It wasn't super well kept/clean, and it could definitely be a bit modernized. But we had a bed and (mostly) hot water, so that's basically all we personally needed. The staff was helpful and friendly and got us a taxi from the place to the ferry.

This was my first trip to Roatan and I think I chose the best place to stay in the West End. The bungalow had a shared balcony where you could relax in a hammock and the beach was literally a few feet in front of my room. The room was a bit rustic, more like a cabin, but it was plenty comfortable and clean for the price. It was a short walk to the little town of West End, so a very convenient location. There was plenty of snorkeling & swimming to be had right there in front of your room. The proprietors and staff were very friendly and informative. As a solo traveler, I felt totally comfortable and safe there. If you're looking for a place right on the water with good value, and don't mind that it's a bit rustic, this is the place for you. The rum punch was also very good at the restaurant/bar right on premises. Thank you Mattie and your staff, for a very pleasant stay!

This hotel has a very helpful and friendly staff. The snorkeling was right off the beach. They found me someone to take me out to snorkel off shore. The starfish were found just like promised. Cabin sits right off the beach just a few steps to the shore.
