“Great Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

My husband and I booked the Kayak and Snorkel trip. We could not have been more pleased. Our group consisted of us, one other couple, a guide, a first mate, and a National Geographic photographer who is writing an article on Upachaya. The equipment was in good shape, the kayak portion was beautiful and not too taxing, and the snorkeling was amazing. Our guide, Edgar, was great. He got in the water with us and helped us spot things we never would have seen on our own - countless varieties of fish and corral, plus the highlight for us was an octopus eating a conch shell! It really makes a difference having someone in the water with you. The first mate stayed in a kayak the whole time and sort of monitored things from above, which is a nice touch in terms of safety.

Lunch was also delicious, with fresh local foods and water, pop, and beer included. Barbara, the owner, was very pleasant and passionate. She is American, but the rest of the staff was Honduran. We appreciated the chance to get to speak with them and learn from them about the area. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough!

Mindy, it was our pleasure having you join us here at Upachaya. We do our best to insure our guests are safe and have an enjoyable experience. Thank you for sharing your experience here on Trip Advisor and we would love to have you come back and join us for a week or so in the lodge. By the way, Manlio posted a few pictures on the "Go Blue Central America Geotourism" Facebook page. This is the organization working in concert with National Geographic to promote those of us supporting eco-tourism, or sometimes labeled as geotourism.

“Wonderful snorkel experience, and more!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

Do not be discouraged about the ride into Upachaya. Unfortunately you will drive past a garbage dump. But Upachaya is totally worth the unsightly scenery along the way. When we arrived Barbera gave us a lovely botanical tour of the grounds, which was beautiful and very interesting. From there, she set us up with our snorkeling equipment, which was very clean and appeared to be quite new. Then Al and his assistant took us out on the boat over the reef. They cleaned our masked with baby soap to make sure they wouldn't get foggy. Al was really awesome. For the next two and a half hours he took us out and was a really informative guide throughout the reef. He was very helpful with handling my son, who was very nervous about snorkeling. He was intuitive about our masks and equipment function, all he had to do was take one look at us and he would know that something needed adjusting. He made us feel very safe. It is a much better experience exploring the reef with a quide. Back at Upachaya, the staff whipped up a delicious healthy lunch that we enjoyed by the beautiful pool amongst the gorgeous jungle flowers. Barbera's place is really special because she was offered by the cruise lines to upsell and have 100+ guests on each tour. She refused the money because that is not the type of experience that she wants to provide. I would highly recommend this tour for cruisers and anyone else visiting the island. Don't spend your money on high priced excursions through the cruise ship. You won't be dissapointed.

“Wonderful Kayak and Snorkel Tour - Best Trip Yet!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

I recently went on this amazing excursion at a stop on the cruise itinerary and it was the best decision! The most breathtaking snorkeling of my life with a bonus: Barb and her staff are such a delight and very knowledgeable! My boyfriend and I chose the kayak excursion, after much debate between the pontoon boat, and it ended up being very peaceful and enjoyable. We had the chance to swim over coral, hold starfish and sea urchins, and spy on octopus! We are hoping to return to Barbs B&B for a whole week very soon. If you choose only one excursion your whole cruise, this should be it. It's worth every penny plus more. Great for all ages, too!

“Wonderful cruise excursion”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014

We were on the Princess cruise recently, and decided to do an independent kayak/snorkel tour instead of the one the cruise line offered. Did some research and found Upachaya, and we were not disappointed! They pick you up from right outside the port and take you on a ride to Upachaya, which is a wellness retreat created by Barb, and it is right on the water. She showed us the plants she grows and their uses for medicine or eating. The kayaking was wonderful, double kayaks and you go right onto the reef. Then the snorkeling....this was the best snorkeling I have ever done, the water was so clear, saw tons of coral/fish/etc...word of advice, wear sunscreen! The guides were local young men and were wonderful, they really knew their stuff! Afterwards you get a delicious lunch prepared right in the kitchen and either a beer or soda. We had a great time doing this tour, and I can't recommend it enough!!

“Delightful Excursion: kayak and snorkel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2014

My friends and I signed up for the Kayak and snorkeling excursion while we were visiting Roatan this past month. What a delightful day! We kayaked through the mangroves and then spent an hour or so snorkeling. Since Upachaya is way from the crowds the reef is in pristine condition. The starfish are red and huge!

The owner, Barb, took the time prior to our excursion to show us around the site. We also had lunch after our excursion into the reef and it was excellent. They also sent a van to pick us up at West End and they were punctual.
