“Best Birthday Celebration Ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2011

Our entire family of eleven plus a group of five friends just returned from the best birthday celebration ever at Media Luna Resort & Spa. We were referred to Media Luna by our booking agent, Rich Henry, and although we were unsure of what to expect at first, this resort could not have been more perfect for our group, which consisted of dive instructors, experienced scuba divers, brand new divers who needed instruction to complete their training and non-divers as well. Every single person in the group was accomodated according to their needs, and the entire group left wanting more!

Upon arrival at Media Luna, we were all stunned at the sheer physical beauty of the surroundings. The location is on a peninsula which is surrounded on three sides by water, providing outstanding vistas from almost any location. Media Luna is an eco resort and buildings are constructed in a manner that blends in with the surrounding environment, providing a very soothing and relaxing atmosphere for the guests. A series of terraced decks with beautiful integrated landscaping provide numerous areas to relax and unwind. There are three beautiful swimming pools, two beaches and numerous additional activities such as volleyball, table tennis (ping-pong), billiards and spa treatments. Organized tours and activities are also readily available.

Our week was primarily focused on scuba diving, which was outstanding. The dive shop was well staffed and all divers received attention at a level that was appropriate for their level of expertise. My understanding is that an expansion and improvements to the dive shop facilities is forthcoming. Dive packages include three boat dives per day along with unlimited shore diving. The shore diving at Media Luna is outstanding, providing opportunities to experience the underwater wonderland any time of the day or night.

The highlight of our week was the birthday celebration, which was enhanced greatly by the staff at Media Luna. The chef prepared an amazing birthday cake that was large enough to feed our entire group of 18 plus more! In addition to the cake, balloons, party favors and table decorations were also provided. We could not have been more pleased with the efforts made by the staff, whom we came to love by the end of our week there. The employees at Media Luna don't even behave as if they're performing a job...they seem to REALLY be happy to be there, and that made us feel happy and welcome at all times.

The worst part of our stay was when it was time to depart. We definitely left wanting more and would highly recommend this phenomenal resort to anyone wishing to experience the amazing beauty of the island of Roatan.

The resort exceeded our expectations. Our cabin was located just far enough away from the main activities (#103) with a view of the sunrise through the palm trees every morning.

The staff were wonderful and extremely accommodating. A quick chat with the staff at the main lobby and any deficiencies were quickly tended to. Bar and dining room staff were pleasant and attentive.

The grounds were well maintained with flowering shrubs and trees. Pools were very clean. All structures, decking and walkways are built to compliment the natural setting of this part of the island. One should not have a problem finding a quiet spot on the resort to soak up the sun and/or indulge in your favorite book. We also had fabulous sunsets almost every night we were there.

As this is an island, most supplies are shipped in. The menu choices were based on availability of goods. The chef, Francesco, was fabulous and very creative at providing variety and tasty meals and snacks. Our A la Carte dinner was exceptional - choice of lobster or chicken.

Dining was in the amphitheatre with tables set on multi-levels. This created a wonderful ambiance for dining and also unobstructed view of the view through opened windows during the day and performances on the stage in the evening. During lunch and dinner there was always a solo performer - clarinet, romantic guitar, and electronic piano player. Sunday nights are designated celebration night with the dining room elaborately decorated.

Scuba diving and snorkelling are excellent as you do not have to go far to engage in either. A shore dive will easily reach the wall. I was told that the coral reef is healthier on this part of the island, with sponges, coral and marine life in abundance. Great off-shore dives and snorkelling are only 15 minute boat ride away.

Claire and Ricardo, dive instructors from Aqua Adventures, are located right on site and are amazing. They were very accommodating and flexible with dive plans.

The dive shop also offers some shopping when they are open - bikinis, cover-ups, natural sunscreen and bug spray, some souveniers, etc.

Although there are plenty of excursions to choose from, we chose to enjoy the resort as it provide everything we needed. David and Nancy did arranged a night out to the local dance club where we mingled and danced with the locals to mix of modern and local music. We had a fabulous time.

You must try a massage at the spa located in a cabin on the far west side of the resort. On Sunday they offered a $10 special for mini facial treatments and/or foot scubs all prepared with natural ingredients!!! Just Fabulous!!!

Miriam offers yoga sessions throughout the week and if you would prefer a one-on-one it can also be arranged.

This resort definitely caters more to the vacationer looking for relaxation, diving, and snorkelling. If you are looking for daily nighlife, shopping, and crowds then the West End is a better choice. One can always hire a driver or rent a car and venture to that end of the island.

If you should have a physical disability then you may find the layout of the resort a challenge as there are multi-levels in the dining room, decking and walkways. Also, the walkways from the cabins to the main building are constructed of concrete and stone which are uneven to walk on.

Suggestion to guests: There were a lot of sand flies at dawn and especially at dusk. Baby oil is recommended as the flies cannot get a good grip to sting. Some guest also brought mosquito coils and 'Off" mosquito lanterns that they used on their private deck, which they said worked well. The resort is fogged twice a day however these little pests are persistant. Locals advise the cactus oil/juice can be purchased in town that is used as an insect repellent and sunscreen combo.

Suggestion to resort:
- Provide a shuttle service to the mall/grocery store and to West End - at least twice during the week.
- Better quality drink mix selection - i.e. natural juices and blender drinks

I will definitely return to this resort for diving and relaxation.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2011

We've recently returned from Media Luna Resort and Spa from a 2week holiday. We were 2 couples traveling together. we stayed from March 21/11 to April 4/11. We had an amazing time!
After a 20 to 30 minute harrowing bus ride we arrived to total paradise...we were greeted with drinks..Check in was slow but hey I had nowhere else to go....drink inhand...beautiful sun...alls good!
Yes the beach is small but we knew that before going....snorkeling was great...saw turtle...shark...Also the bar closes @ 2300hrs...so if you are looking to party the night away...this might not be for you! The resort itself is gorgeous, the cabana's, the pools, restaurant...The food...lots of variety, plentiful and the a la carte is magnificent. I agree the bar could have a better selection but I was never out of a nice cool drink (remember they are still not fully fonctional). We had temporary umbrella's so we could always find some shade. The grounds are beautifully kept, place is immaculate. As for the bugs, they do fumagate twice daily..I got plenty of bug bites but I noticed I mostly got them when I did excursions. Live entertaiment everyday. As for Patrick (sunwing rep) I think in previous reviews they were quite harsh...frankly I think he did an excellent job of greeting us @ the airport, very knowledgable, helpful and well prepared with our briefing. Personally, I think Patrick and his wife Lucie were excellent and ready to help. If @ any time during your stay and need something feel free to ask front desk to call him.
We met and hopefully made some very interesting friends. Had a blast with everyone of them...I apologize to my new Italien friends from the Toronto area!..lol..
Excursions: Budget rental (small suv) 71.00$/day
Snorkeling-plenty to chose from
Island Tour with taxi-100.00$/day for 4 people..very interesting and fun (ask for Santos) and for the adventurous type go to Hole in the Wall
Iguana Farm-8.00$/pp very small but okay
Mayan Farm-10.00$/pp interesting, small but guide very passionate and knowledgable (butterflies...monkeys...boa's...leopard
Deep Sea fishing-400.00$ for 4 people half day...600.00$ for full day

Improvements: Front desk needs improvement but if you need anything...Anthony and Helena are the people to see...or ask them to call Patrick..Bar- more selection
Bar: more selection
Rooms: maybe a little card to put on outside door handle stating make room or do not disturb.
Shuttle: should have one to west end, west bay etc...and @ least 3 times a week.
Overall....spectacular resort...great place to relax and recharge!
Special mention...Micheal(Arlie), Roberto, Jorge, Alisa, Francesco, Orlando...thanks for making our travels extra special and making Roatan a memorable experience!!!

I just returned from a week at Media Luna and felt completely spoiled. I had read varying reviews, and was surprised by the disappointment of previous travellers. Tucked inside a bay of gin-coloured waters, the resort is secluded and offers the perfect nirvana for those seeking privacy, attentive service, decadent food and smashing sunsets. Twenty-five minutes from the airport, the resort is exempt from the usual beach-stuffing crowds of larger resorts. If you are wanting a more social experience with a rowdy nightlife, one of the other Henry Morgan properties in West Bay might be more appropriate.

The unique cabana accommodations are designed for royalty: four poster beds with sheer curtains, a posh bathroom with a sexy open concept rainfall shower, bidet and modern his and her sinks. The private balconies could hold over 30 people! The staff are remarkably friendly, without intrusion.

Because Roatan is "the island of bays," you won't find a great expanse of beach to walk along. But, the resort has built three decks and two long piers that place you practically bobbing on the sea with incredible vistas. The private road that leads into the resort is extremely hilly, but offers an intense morning running route for the avid!

You will be well satiated by a fantastic menu, inspired by the Italian chef on board. There are conch fritters, sea bass, calamari skewers, tilapia, and typical Honduran fare: empanadas, cheese-stuffed puposas and fiery tamales. Between meals (served in the open-air ampitheatre overlooking the sea) there are hot bar snacks like plantain chips, onion rings, fish fritters, tortilla chips and refried beans. And the frothy lattes and bold local coffee are tempting at all hours of the day.

The property is immaculate, full of blooming hibiscus, lizards skittering about, hummingbirds taking over the airspace with dozens of butterfly species. It is windy, but it's an island! There are spa services and a few excursions (snorkelling, dolphin encounters, whale shark tours), but most guests opt to rent a car ($65 US/day) to travel at their own leisure.

Scuba lessons are available, there are yoga classes and a $10 shuttle to the West End street party on Friday nights. There is also a shuttle to the local disco--otherwise, taxi fees are a bit exorbidant ($40 a person or $100 for 4).

Media Luna gets top marks for ambience though. It's an indulgent experience. Take a couple of books, the one you love, and be impressed and seduced by it all!

Room Tip: ATM machines will dispense US or local currency.

We had such a fantastic holiday; we are not sure where to start.

The Roulette means we could have ended up at one of the five Henry Morgan properties. We are both easy going enough that if we had ended up in West Bay, we would have enjoyed the nightlife there as much as we enjoyed the seclusion offered at the Media Luna Resort. We were there for one week February 28 - March 7, 2011.

Where do we begin to describe the one of the most awesome vacations we have had to date. We did a lot of research before we booked our trip through itrave2000 online and ended up confirming 14 days before our vacation paying $1090 each taxes included. We also took advantage of their hotel and 8 day parking deal out of Montreal at around $72 plus tax.

To say the rooms are spectacular is an understatement. All the rooms are 5 star plus individual cottages with huge L shaped decks that provide shade with outdoor ceiling fan, sun for drying towels and unbelievable ocean views for most. The bed is absolutely beautiful; it is a high 4 poster with sheer curtains all the way around it. The enormous bathroom has two sinks, a toilet, a boday and a rain shower separated by a glass wall. The housekeeping staff was always attentive, including beautiful towel art everyday and even a turndown service every evening while you are enjoying your dinner. They do spray for bugs twice a day; however, you should still bring bug repellent and after bite just in case.

Our Italian Chef Francesco provided us with the most amazing buffet each and every meal. There was always a variety and rarely were the dishes duplicated throughout the entire week. There was always something for everyone and much more tasty than your usual Cuba fare. The dining hall is laid out like an amphitheatre with multiple levels wrapped around a centre stage. At lunch and dinner service there is always live entertainment. During dinner, enjoy Sunny and Jorge and their Caribbean classics, but while singing a Bob Marley tune, Sunny can be coaxed into his favourite songs, which are country. While this is a quiet resort they provide the perfect excuse to dance a little and create your own party environment. The serving staff is lead by Darling, he is an absolute sweetheart. Our new “adopted son Ever” will take care of you with his huge smile and shy island charm. Save a space in your suitcase, as you will want to take him home with you too. Alesa, Hector and Jorge also looked after us implacable as well as Robert, who has been to known to willingly help out with the odd Latin dance lesson after dinner.

There was only one bar open while we were there but a second is in the works; however, during the day the bartenders travelled around the pool and down to the beach offering drinks with or without a splash of rum. Jorge, will quickly become your favourite bartender, try his lemon daiquiri, mmmmmm. There are always tasty snacks served in the bar before lunch and dinner. Bar staff are always willing to help carry a tray out to the pool for you. There is also coffee and cookies available mid-afternoon beside the pool.

There are really 2 pools and a shallow third pool, which is more like a late afternoon hot tub. Yes the beach area is small, but it is private unlike the West end where the cruise ships unload thousands of passengers several times a week. What some guest will never know is the spectacular corals and marine life that exists at the edge of this beach.

While simple snorkel gear can take you out to the marker buoys just in front of the resort the Aqua dive team lead by Ricardo and Claire can take you from the pool to the caves located a few yards away. This is world class diving within 30 minutes from the resort. All the words and pictures cannot begin to describe your discovery of this top rated diving destination. Wreak dives, cannon dives, shallow cave dives, and spectacular walls with multi-coloured living corals await your discovery. During the 6 dives that my husband enjoyed I spent time in the exercise room overlooking the pool and ocean, which we observed, was far superior to other resort exercise facilities. For those who wish to take a day trip and venture a little further a trip to Cayo Cochinos on a 45 foot dive boat (approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes across open sea) to a National Park which is part of a series of islands. We enjoyed the best snorkelling experience ever, shallow green water with coral growing to the surface, and a multitude of fish species. A tasty lunch with the local island African natives was also part of this excursion, which we both greatly enjoyed. If you decide to take this excursion this is a wonderful place to bring items for secluded people including items for children.

The Media Luna is a resort that is growing into itself. During our stay there was only 53 guest and probably as many staff members. Approximately half the rooms are completely and ready for residency. Not all of the facility is up and running to full capacity. The a la carte restaurant is still not 100% but they are working on improving it. The buffet more than made up for any shortcomings the a la carte lacked. Davey and Nancy are the guest relations’ specialists and their job is to make sure your stay is the best it can be. You can rely on them to take care of any minor issues that may occur with a smile. They both go above and beyond to make your stay 100% memorable.

As part of the all-inclusive package be sure to see Miriam at the spa as they have different activities that are included such as the cucumber facial. They offer massages and other service at a very reasonable additional cost. Get to know her and you will find out she is from Minnesota, came to Roatan 9 years ago to start a school which had 4 students to start and has grown significantly over the years. Everyone you meet on this island has a story. Many are from somewhere else such as our chef Francesco from Italy who may also be your dive master on occasion, Roberto from Argentina who was my private dive partner on Sunday in front of the resort to Patrick and Lucy are from Cornwall, Ontario and on and on. Get to know them all as they are all there to enhance your experience at the Media Luna Resort and Spa.

We have heard many negative comments about our Sunwing reps Lucy and Patrick. This was by no means our experience as this couple met us at the airport upon our arrival and were cordial and helpful in directing us to our transportation. Through our orientation, departure and even a side trip to the Henry Morgan where we chatted and threatened to take their jobs this couple were helpful, informative, and friendly. We envy them both and sympathize also as we understand their jobs include customer service, which often involves negative attitudes from some of their customers. We encountered a group of travellers (6) who took pleasure in finding negative things to constantly complain about to anyone who would listen, even though they booked his hotel specifically for two weeks. The staff worked hard to rebook them in a new resort in West Bay for their second week; however, we doubt the complaining stopped there.

Whether you choose the roulette or book this resort directly it has an absolutely wonderful staff, beautiful view and quiet and relaxing atmosphere for couples. This is not a resort for children or singles looking to hook up. Positive attitude, enjoy the hospitality and have a wonderful vacation with memories to last a lifetime. We rate it 5 star plus.

We recently returned from one spectacular week at Media Luna. The location is fabulous, with a beautiful view of the bay and coast. Nice pool and fantastic decks; umbrellas have been added and there is shade available in different areas at various times of the day. The weather was perfect; gentle ocean breezes and blue skies.
The staff was wonderful and couldn't have been any better. Yes, the resort is not at full capacity but the buffet has more than enough choices for the number of guests there. Fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant; fish, chicken and shrimp daily; calamari at least 3-4 days; beef wellington and steak twice, pasta station daily. Staff had a "Special Night" on the last night for the Canadian group with fabulous foods and decor. All dining room tables have a view of the water. Musical entertainment daily at lunch and dinner; wonderful traditional Honduran and Garifuna dance groups.
Water and snorkeling & diving are top-notch. First class dive operation; 50-200 feet depths accessable right from the beach; coral formations are unsurpassed. Claire and Ricardo are the best; knowledgeable and fun! Shark dives, night dives and excursions to nearby islands are available right from the resort. Spa services are excellent; had a Yoga session with Miriam on the deck over the ocean that was wonderful.
This resort is owned by an Italian group, with an Italian chef, so the meals are geared more toward the European style. 50% of guests were Italians, the rest out of Toronto. Conversations with the staff assured us that they are gearing up for completion of construction after this season. In response to previous reviews criticizing availability of premium wines and liquor; we have stayed all over the Carribbean at All-Inclusive resorts from three to five stars and have never seen premium beveragesor bottled wine included.
The Cabanas were fantastic; quiet, private, great shower with a window view of the ocean, large outdoor deck. Fresh beach towels, nightly turn-down and wonderful towel sculptures every day. The grounds are spectacular; nicely landscaped, maintenance workers always attending to something.
Tourism has not yet caught on in Roatan as on other Carribbean islands, so it still retains its quaintness. Only one cruise ship daily; other islands have 6-8 per day! This resort has only been open three months. We got a great rate on this vacation and will be curious to see prices once they're 100%. Will definitely return; was one of the best resorts we've ever stayed at. If you're looking for night life stay at West End or better yet, go to Cancun. But if you're looking for a relaxing stay without the craziness that exists at larger resorts, go to Media Luna.

We just returned from a week at Media Luna and can only say good things about it. If you are looking for crowded beaches or busy bars, this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, good diving, wonderful accommodation and great staff, this is the place.

The cabanas are very lovely and modern. The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. The grounds are well kept and clean (yes, the "Fog Man" does do his rounds twice a day). The eating area is set up so that each table has a view of the ocean. The food was healthy and there was a good variety. Make sure you take advantage of the pasta bar and espresso machine!

There is good snorkelling right off the hotel, but if you dive, you will not find better dive masters than Ricardo and Claire. They are helpful, friendly and knowledgable. They are just great.

The spa is very nice and set in an exquisite spot on the property, overlooking the ocean. We found Patrick, the Sunwing rep to be quite helpful and friendly.

There are some minor drawbacks such as only one type of beer is available in the all-inclusive package and the cocktails could do with a bit of a make-over. There is shade, but not in abundance, they need some thatched umbrellas on the pool deck. The biggest issue for us was having to refill our own water bottles each time you wanted water. You can purchase water at the bar or refill the two small bottles you receive upon arrival.

There are plenty of day trips available or you can rent a car for the day (US$35) and drive to West End for some shopping and lunch. Then take a water taxi over to West Bay and experience the mob scene on the beach. If you are like the rest of the people we met in our Sunwing group, you will be glad to return to the tranquility of Media Luna.
