“Palmetto Bay a great get away from the world.”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

After many searches on places to stay on Roatan we came across Palmetto Bay from a friend at work that went for his honeymoon. He explained the resort to me as well as the island since I had kids. The simple way of describing this resort is if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of an island town and spend quality time with your kids then this is for you. You do not have a TV or Internet service in your cottage. Which is what I was looking for, kids are getting older 9 and 11 and as soon as you can blink an eye they will not be around for long. You should rent a car, we stopped at the local grocery store and filled up on groceries. The Resort provides all inclusive deals but we only wanted breakfast (which was outstanding) and then we made lunches for the beach and cooked almost every night at the resort. Renting the car helps so then you can explore the island. The Snorkeling around Palmetto is ok, you have some pockets where you can find big conk shells and a little reef of the beach. The Diving is out of this world, one of the best in the area. It is great since the boat is docked at the dock and you do not have to drive to it. Also, you would dive with a small group and not with 15 people. The service a Palmetto is very friendly and respectful. It is a very relax atmosphere and the know how to take care of you. The food was always good and happy hour with great prices. Jose Aquino made our stay very pleasant and always greet us with a smile and also with great suggestions. He made our last night in Roatan unforgettable, a dinner on the beach we will never forget. He was outstanding!
Great snorkel at west bay and also great snuba for the kids. Got to come back!

We visit Roatan every year and have stayed at many places on the island. We love the people there and try to act like we're locals. We liked the secluded location of Palmetto Bay Plantation, but we like to run to the store or watch a local soccer game at night and staying in Palmetto Bay was just too far for us to travel. They rake the beach everyday, but by the the next morning the sea grass finds its way to the shore. Staff is very friendly and helpful and offer sight seeing excursions. Having your own rental truck is the only way to get around the island, just make sure you get a 4x4. You may not need four wheel drive on the road to Palmetto Bay, but when you do you'll be glad you have it!

Hi Kristal
Thanks so much for your review. We understand how our secluded location can make local island events an effort to enjoy but our location is precisely why many of our guests love Palmetto Bay Plantation.
Our guests extol their opportunity to relax, kick back, enjoy the calm waters, ocean breezes, sip a cool drink and/or partake in some diving or snorkeling.
We offer our guests the opportunity to grocery shop on their way in from the airport and many take advantage of the offer. Not many people on their vacation want to grocery shop more than once, but a ride can be arranged if need be.
We're glad you came and stayed with us. Next time, plan to kick back and relax on our secluded beach and our friendly service will make your stay the best on Roatan.
With warm regards,
Palmetto Bay Plantation

I simply inquired if the resort had wifi and if they could provide a brochure of activities. I received a response to ask if I had reservations. I responded no but my travel agent might have been in touch. They responded quite abrasively and never answered the question if they had wifi in the rooms. When I followed up, they indicated they had wifi with excalmation points. The website does not give a lot of detailed info and subsequently shoudl expect inquisitions. I loved the resort from the pcitures but unfortunately will not book reservations due to customer service.

Dear Anonymous
We are very sorry that you had a poor experience when contacting our reservations. Such a simple question should not elicit such a negative experience. By the way, we have Wifi in our main pavilion but not in our villas.
Our pictures (as you noted) are much more indicative of our beautiful (and I promise friendly) property. We would really like for you to give us another chance. As an incentive, we would like to offer you breakfast at our resort for you entire stay at no charge. This offer is good through December 15, 2013.
Pls speak to reservations and reference this reply.

Once again, I do apologize for any misunderstanding and we welcome you to give us another chance.

With warm regards,
Palmetto Bay Plantation

I'm from the island of Utila, next to Roatan and decided it would be good to get away for a weekend. This was the place, I've heard many good reviews about this place and had to see it for myself, the pool is awesome, clean rooms, and the FOOD was amazing, customer service wasn't that bad, they did help with anything that we needed to fit our needs. Would definitely go back!

Went down to visit friends and get away and was so very excited to stay there. Was greeted with sweet staff, a great room and a relaxing trip. The beach was fabulous and the pool was heavenly. The only problem is I didn't stay there long enough!

We chose Palmetto Bay to stay for 2 nights to begin our vacation in Roatan. We had reservations at another resort for 7 days and wanted a longer vacation. We reserved for the "Orchid Room" (2 bedroom 1 bath) and their website made it look like it was the perfect place for 4 adults to enjoy. It was not. When we arrived we were thrilled by the warm welcome and the welcome cocktail, it went downhill from there.

Our bags were placed in the wrong room (our bags were in another couple's room and their bags in ours) We had to tromp around and make things right. The Orchid room was FILTHY! The bathroom light was broken as was the ceiling fan in the kitchen (they fixed the bathroom light and it did not work again the next day). The fridge was disgusting as was the toilet seat. There was dried blue paint on one of the Bedrooms sheets, there was no A/C. One of the rooms had a fan, that was also broken. There are stains on the walls in the other bedroom. The Orchid Room is run down and needs to be taken out of their rental options. It is unfit for humans.

The pool was nice, the staff was friendly that is until they asked what time our flight was leaving on day #2 (remember we were only staying for 2 days) when I told them we were not flying out that day and we had reservations at another resort they refused to drive us in their shuttle to the other resort which was on the way to the airport. They did however arrange for a rather expensive cab. They said they would have maintenance retrieve our bags from our room and there were many between the dive gear, groceries and luggage when the cab arrived. Maintenance never showed up so we were forced to tote our luggage in the heat and humidity (making several trips). At least the disappointments did not disappoint.

By the way this resort is located at the end of a very bumpy and windy DIRT Road. Their excuse for not letting us take their shuttle to our next destination was the driver would be busy with incoming guests. Guess what, as we were loading our luggage into the cab, their shuttle driver hopped in their van. I said "are you headed to the airport" he said yes. Of course he was. What a joke! What kind of service is that?

You should know that this "resort" is not a resort at all rather the units are all owned separately. Therefore the owner of the bar/pool area has no control over the conditions of the accommodations, I am sure there are other bungalows that are nice (like shown on their website) but the Orchid is not one of them.

However, that does not excuse the extremely poor customer service and attitude that was forced on us. So if you are considering renting their "Orchid" room go camping instead.

We chose Palmetto Bay for relaxation.
It's truely a nature lover's paradise
People of Roatan are very nice and welcoming. This part of the island is still too remote to be affected by the strong undergoing development which allow you to truly savor the nature of Roatan.
We stayed at Bougainvillea Villas Includes Living Room and Kitchen 2 bedrooms it cost around $300 per day.
The rooms are simple well clean and either the cliff side or the hill side offer great views of the ocean.
The food was very good with lots of seafood. You can order anything from the menu and they also offer a daily special.
If we return to Roatan I would definitely stay at this hotel. It's at the quiet end of the Island, it seems to be managed really efficiently and staff are really friendly and responsive. Also, their tours are not rediculously expensive.
