“Great snorkeling experience!”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

My husband and another couple stopped at Roatan on our recent cruise to the Western Carribean. John, the owner, met us at the port and gave us an amazing snorkeling experience off of the reef right in front of his place. Before we started, he gave us a tour of his apartments which are very clean and roomy. The porch with private beach is both awesome and relaxing. My only regret is that we didn't have nearly enough time in port to spend at this haven. I would highly recommend his hideaway to anyone, as it definitely lives up to it's name!

This place is not fancy but quite charming, very clean, comfortable, and an awesome hideaway/getaway.. It is right on the beach, has incredible views from the porch, an amazing coral reef right out the front door. You will NOT be sorry if you choose to stay at Hobbies Hideaway. John was an extremely gracious host, he picked us up, told us all about the area on our ride to Hobbies Hideaway. We will defineatley rate this place as one of our favorite places to stay and most definealty visit again. Please do something good for your body and soul and stay at Hobbies Hideaway for some comfort, peace and relaxation. Thanks John ever so much.

We just returned from 9 days at HH. We were greeted by John who picked us up at the airport and immediately took us to the store for groceries. Right after that he took us out in his boat and we snorkled out in the reef right in front of Hobbie's Hideaway where we got to see a huge aquarium right in our front yard. A couple of days later, John gave us a tour of the island which I don't think we missed a thing on the island! John is a good tour guide :). We enjoyed the peacefulness of just chillin on the patio overlooking the Carribean. John and Sue treated us with an awesome lunch and his conch fritters. The rooms are comfortable and are equipped with everything we needed i.e kitchen supplies, bbq, ect. (There are no restaurants within walking distance). Taxis come by all of the time so no problem with transportation. We had a paddle boat, kayaks that were part of the package. We enjoyed a day at The Jungle Top Zipline in Coxen Hole that was recommended by Ronald. Also, loved the Iguana Farm and then walked over to Frenchy's 44 both recommended by John. This is a great deal for the price!

My partner and I just returned from a week at Hobbie's Hideaway and it was exactly what we were hoping for. Clean rooms, cold AC, AMAZING snorkeling, kind hosts and kitchen with everything you need. Some other reviews stated it may not be the best place for travelers who kind of like to keep to themselves but we (who often keep to ourselves) found it great for us. We usually did our own thing but if there was ever a moment we reached out, John and Sue were super helpful. Beach was secluded and you have access to all their paddleboats, kayaks, snorkeling gear, etc. Accidentally left some important docs in the room and before I even realized I was missing them, John had already contacted me in America asking where he can send them through certified mail. You'll be in good hands at Hobbie's.

Hello Pat and Jerry, Being a senior reviewer with Trip advisor I did not realize.Thank you for the trip advisor review. It was enjoyment for all of us. I didn't realize what accomplished travelers you were until I saw Jerry's shirt from Tahiti. All that you told us was a experience for us. Of course this is one of the things we like about our people that stay with us at Hobbies Hideaway . But you snorkeling on the reef areas in front of the apartments even over the grass areas impressed me to the pristine areas that we took you to. You can snorkel ! .Grandma is not your calling. More like Senorita mermaid. It's people like you that make our day. Thank you again for staying with us. I know your coming back. We'll be here for you. John and Sue

If you are looking for a quiet, comfortable apartment that is reasonably priced with owners who treat you like family, this is the place for you. We stayed in the back apartment, which I guess is apartment #3. We had no ocean view, and few windows, but we had air conditioning, a kitchen, with a full sized refrigerator, and a very comfortable queen sized bed. The eating area was very small, but we took our meals to the open deck eating area which used to be Sunshine cafe and had the high priced restaurant experience without the high price. The tejas01 reviewers stayed here at the same time that we did, and the cookout that we had with everyone participating in bringing and/or preparing food was awesome! Since John and Sue, the manager/owners live just upstairs, they are available if you need something or have problems. They make you and your comfort and enjoyment a top priority. You cannot find more attentive hosts anywhere. A free airport pickup and trip to the grocery market are also included in a longer stay.
I went out snorkeling with John in his boat, and it was some of the best snorkeling ever with one of the best snorkeling partners you can have. Hobbies Hideaway does not have the sandy bottom, good wading and floating ocean access of West Bay, since the ocean is quite shallow and full of sea grass to the end or the pier and beyond, but it is excellent as a home base. You can snorkel the reef without a boat, but it is a ways to swim over the sea grass. For the difference in price between this and the resorts of West Bay, you can be able to afford and enjoy all these other areas with money left over.

We did not have a car, but used Channin Bodden who is an excellent tour guide and transporter and were more than pleased with what we were able to do.

This is not a luxury resort and is not the same beach as you find in West Bay, but for overall experience we would not hesitate to stay here again next time we are in Roatan. Thank you John and Sue for a wonderful Roatan vacation experience.

Room Tip: Our back room was more private and great for us. If you want ocean view, one of the front two rooms...

Just returned from a week at Hobbies Hideaway. This was our second stay with John and Sue, and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We rented apt #1 that was a one bedroom, and our friends stayed in apt #2 that was a two bedroom. He has also added a third one bedroom apt also. The apartments are fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We cooked several meals while we were there. John and Sue provided dinner one night for us, and John does make the best conch fritters on the island, also Key Lime pie too! There is a bbq grill provided also for grilling steaks and seafood. The apartments are very affordable, and Sandy Bay is a very relaxing part of the island to stay.

John is a great host, he knows everything about the island. He has paddle boats, kayaks, two boats for fishing and snorkeling tours, and also provides island tours too. Everything you could possible need or want, John is the man to meet requests.

If you have time, visit the Broby Orphanage in Gravel Bay. John took alot of time out of his day helping us make purchases at local grocery stores and markets for the orphanage.

John and Sue are a comfort arriving to the island. They go out of their way to make you feel like family during your stay. I can not wait to return!
