Coral View Beach Resort
Ranked #7 of 8 Hotels in Utila
Reviewed 3 March 2007

Coral View is ideal if you are looking for a stay that is away from the bar and music scene on Utila. It's about a 20 minute walk from the town center. Renting a bike or golf cart would be useful if you see yourself wanting to pop into town for dinner or music. For my husband and I, we were happy to while away the time quietly on the dock or in a sea kayak. Coral View's dock extends right out to the coral reef - you just step off the dock onto the reef. Snorkelling gear comes as part of the price of your stay ($50 for a double room); we were able to go snorkelling whenever we wanted. The reef is alive and beautiful even if the weather is overcast (as it was when we stayed). One can swim out over the reef for about 40' at which point it drops down about 20 or 30'; if you can free dive it's a great chance to go over the shelf. Soon enough the reef drops off even deeper. With it's placement on both the ocean on the south side and the lagoon on the north side, there's lots to do for the outdoors person. We kakayed into the mangroves and followed the canal for a while. A tandem sit-on-top sea kayak was $10 for the day. The proprietors, Mrs. Tonia and Mr. C.J. were friendly and helfpul. Ms. Tonia is a great cook; the meals were all individually prepared which meant they took a while. But when was the last time that you had home-made french fries and freshly cut/steamed vegetables? Our red snapper was outstanding and very fresh. Ice and water are all purified. The bar on the dock opens mid-afternoon and the sunsets from the dock are great. Our room was small, but comfortable; absolutely no need for the air conditioning in February. In fact, a light jacket was useful in the evening. No TVs in the room; but hey, if I wanted TV I could stay home, right? Internet on Utila was spotty during our stay due to government problems, but a phone call directly to Coral View confirmed our reservations. If Ms. Tonia asks you to mail a check for the deposit, don't hesitate. It's OK. The family is just that...family.

Our best treat was swimming with dolphins late one afternoon, right off their dive boat. It was a spontaneous thing, and wouldn't be likely to happen often, but after that experience it was hard to imagine that our trip to Honduras could get any better! You'll love the enthusiasm of Ms. Tonia and her daughter, Toniette.

We happened into the Coral View by approaching the owner who was waiting for a guest at the ferry dock. It was a lucky event. The Coral View has one of the best locations on Utila. It is at the end of a spit with the ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other. The room that we had faced the lagoon. The buildings themselves remind me of a Maine lodge. The rooms are small and spartan, but in a woodsy lodge like way. The buildings and grounds are very spacious and completely surrounded by water. The grounds make for easy interaction with other guests.

There is no real beach (typical of Utila) The center of activity is a huge deck from which you can dive or snorkel or just lay out. There is a dramatic wall just off the deck and lots of fish. The resort has a very well equipped dive shop with 2 boats. The current divemasters are a beautiful couple from the US who are incredibly helpful. The diving is so easy, you can schedule it pretty much however you want and you won't be subject to the crowds of other diving expeditions. They have a salt water pool that they use for classes. They also offer nighttime snorkeling, which got great reviews from a father and son duo. We felt like we were being lazy, but we still got so much from the water activities. (a day trip to the cays and kayaking through the mangroves.) The owners are super special people and the food that we had was very good, except that we often made the pretty twenty minute walk to town for meals.

From what we saw elsewhere on the island, if location is important, this is the place.
