“Staff was great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

Scuba diving was great. Beautiful reefs. We didn't see whale sharks but just another reason to come back. We just started diving but they were quite responsive to our requests and fears. Great staff. Anke and Fede were just good good good. Super.
Re: rooms. Our room on first floor away from the water was musty. Was very humid so it is not surprising. I visited a second floor room facing water and it was quite nice smelling. The rooms were kept very clean.

Room Tip: My first floor room was musty.

I travel every week for work, and have never, ever experienced this kind of customer service & personalization on a trip. My husband & I just returned from a week at Utopia, dove 3-4 times/day, and loved every minute of the personal attention we received. Summary:

Diving - Fede and Anke are 2 of the best DMs you'll dive with. They spent their time with us looking for whale sharks (hard to find - so don't expect you'll always see them in Utila but they'll do their best to try to locate them), pointing out fish on dives, including us on lion fish hunts, and guiding night & shore dives. Often when we dive, we find that DMs don't want to have much to do with us before or after - it's just a job for them. This was not the case at Utopia. Anke & Fede will check on you at breakfast, will invite you to meet their families (side trip to Pigeon Cay), want to see your pictures & videos - basically, they are part of your dive experience if you are willing to include them. Very experienced divers and very caring which was a large part of what made our week.

Food - incredible, they have a new chef Abby who just joined them from Ritz in DC. Not only are the meals fabulous (including fresh fish every day, wonderful salads with fish for lunch) - Abby organized a bonfire for us on our last night to tell us a few ghost stories from Utila. Another personal touch from Utopia.

Accommodations - very adequate, and the very slight problems we had were immediately resolved (within minutes) by management at Utopia. Rooms were clean, plenty of fresh water, and anything extra you need is immediately handled by Denean and Autumn.

There were many additional extra touches by the group at Utopia, far too many to mention in this review, but generally we felt pampered from the time we arrived until the time we left. Utopia is definitely on our short list of dive locations we will revisit immediately before it's too discovered.

After searching for a long time of a dive resort where we would feel comfortable, we found Utopia Village. The experience was amazing as we expected an experience singular in nature. However, we found the environment to be very team oriented and almost felt as if we had gained another family by the time we had left. The rooms were a perfect mixture of both comfort and elegance. We stayed during out honeymoon which also entailed small gestures to make it even better!

The staff were extremely friendly and not the unsettling sort of friendly that may seem off putting to some. They genuinely were good people and loved what they were doing there....they also had some interesting storied of what brought them to bear in landing in such a remote place far from home. Our dive instructor was more than anyone could ever ask out for! She had a way of making learners/beginners like us feel extremely comfortable in getting certified. The water was so beautiful and calm and the reef once under water was like exploring a hidden city. The colors were overwhelming and the unique life there will never be forgotten. It will be hard to top the dives there and we were a little spoiled by discovering diving in such a wonderful place....but we will continue to try! If your looking for a real good time then this is the place off the beaten path.

Also, the gluten free menu here was awesome and the food was delicious!!!!!! Didn't get sick once and I'm extremely intolerant. Three meals a day...and morning/afternoon snack. If your a heavy eater you may want to bring extra snacks. However, found the diet there to be revitalizing as all the food was fresh with no weird preserved fake food items found in the states. Also, the sand fleas will be anywhere not industrialized in the region, just bring spray though they already spay organic spray that isn't harmful to it envioroment unlike other resorts.

Room Tip: Get the upstairs ocean view.....room M8!
